  1. Yes. After every trip I download all the track records and file them, and then update my POIs with any new ones (like car parks). The only data left on the GPSr are POIs and maps. I upload any planned routes / waypoints / caches before I set off.

  3. In car: Garmin 60CSx On trail: Garmin 60CSx!
  4. Hmmm. Think I'll wait until things settle down before I update mine. I like the 'D's and the unit is working absolutely fine on 3.70/3.00 as was out caching yesterday. (Was actually looking for the master reset key presses and Quit-Menu-Out-Power hold thing worked no problem - thanks for that info!).
  5. I sent an e-mail in saying it had cracked (it was the latch/hook part which had cracked, resulting in it not closing properly - i.e. probably not sealing fully) and that I was disappointed a unit not yet 2 years old hadn't lasted well and they wrote back to say they'd put a replacement in the post. Quite right too, as it cost me about £350 (somewhere between $525 and $700, say) and if it can't last two years I could probably have successfully argued it wasn't fit for purpose, as it isn't a 'cheap' unit and is designed for some rough handling being an outdoor type unit. Don't know about the states but here in the UK an item has to be fit for purpose and that overrides any warranty set by the retailer/manufacturer. E.g. if a semi-pro camera costing £2000 has a one year warranty and breaks after 13 months you could successfully argue that an item of that value and intended use should last a lot longer than 13 months without defect. That would mean the manufacturer/retailer would then have to repair it either free or at 'reasonable' cost, which could e.g. be that you'd pay to ship it back to them but they would repair it for free and get it back to you. $10 for the battery cover doesn't sound unreasonable, but if they'd asked you for the $110 refurb fee I think that would have been quite different. I'm pleased with Garmin in that it was dealt with quickly and with no fuss.
  6. Quick update: Garmin replaced the battery cover for free. No fuss, done over e-mail, great stuff.
  7. Me too. They've just replaced a cracked battery cover for my out-of-warranty 60CSx for free. All done very quickly over e-mail. Cool!
  8. A little while ago there were problems reported with the trip meter in the (Vista) HCx's- check out the GPS Technology forum on here to see if that's been resolved. (The 60CSx didn't have that problem IIRC).
  9. Open them using MapSource and use that to send the track to your GPS.
  10. I bought my TopoGB online, I just searched for cheapest price (at the time it was at Global Gizmos). I've found the TopoGB maps very useful - probably more so for walking trips than for geocaching though. They are routable too, so they saved me having to buy a satnav for our cars -I just take my 60CSx along.
  11. Mine looks like that on the rubber either side of the buttons but not on the buttons themselves. Its less than 2 years old and the battery compartment latch has cracked so it won't close properly anymore. I'm quite disappointed that a unit which cost >£350 (=$700) hasn't lasted 24 months. I've e-mailed Garmin support so will see what they say. If I can send it in for repair and complete face lift at the same time it might be worth the cost. ...Or I might argue it's not fit for purpose and should be repaired for free.
  12. Did you originally select 'Navigate' or 'Map'? If you want to follow the route (i.e. you want to 'navigate' it) then select Navigate. If you just want to see the route on the map (e.g. to check it's correct) select Map. When I'm navigating a route and I press Quit, it takes me to the previous standard screen (in my case the satellite strength screen). If I highlight a route, press enter and then select Map - and then press Quit, it takes me back to the route screen with the two options - which is what makes me think you're selecting Map, not Navigate. When you select Navigate you get a choice of 'Follow Road' or 'Off road' before it shows the route on the map. If you select 'Follow Road' it will use the Topo road database to calculate a road route. Therefore you need to select Off Road for hiking/rambling/off-road biking etc. Hope that helps.
  13. button presses in [ ]: [Menu], [menu], select Setup, [Enter], select System, [Enter], select Software Version [Enter]
  14. I bought a 60CSx a few months ago and am very pleased with it. However, the basemap isn't at all complete (for the UK anyway), I live in Guildford and the A322 isn't on the basemap (it's a major road, partly dual carriageway). I've since bought the UK topo maps as I use the GPS for walking trips. I wasn't expecting much from the road map/routing side of things but I've actually found the road maps are accurate and perfectly usable for finding addresses and related auto-routing for use in the car as a sat-nav. In fact, I'm not sure what's missing compared with the City Navigator software (- in terms of details; I'm aware Topo GB doesn't include Europe!). Hope that helps.
  15. $220 Man, I wish we could get those prices over here in England. A Vista HCx is at cheapest £220 (=approx $440). I wonder what the import costs would be, surely not as dear as paying twice the price? Might look into this a bit further.
  16. Just installed Topo GB v2 and the unlock wizard errors with an error 12038 saying it can't connect to the Internet. I called Garmin support and they sorted it out straight away - keyed the registration details and gave me the 25-digit unlock code so now all is working! Thought I'd post this in case anyone else has this problem, and to say how great Garmin support were in dealing with it.
  17. Thanks, that helps. It's the auto-routing I really want it for, so it looks like I'll go for City Navigator. Just need to find a good price... yet another challenge! G
  18. What's the difference between: MetroGuide Europe v9 and City Navigator Europe v9 also, how does Topo GB v2 compare with respect to auto-routing? I.e. will I get good auto-routing with Topo, or do I need all 3?! Very confused!! At present I have the World Basemap on my 60CSx (as it has more roads on the map for the UK than the Atlantic Basemap...) and the Scottish Mountaineering Club's contour data, for walking and Geocaching. Can anyone shed any light on what to get (or not!). Cheers Goat
  19. Hi. recently got a GPSmap60CSx to help prevent my wife and I getting lost on walks. Found the Geocaching site by accident while looking for GPSr info prior to purchasing one. No finds yet - will get out one day...
