  1. I had to install cgeo for an event activity. Now when I use geocaching.com and try to look at a cache page on Firefox like I used to it somehow switches me to cgeo for the display of cache information. I don't want the two apps to be intertwined like this. I couldn't find a setting to disable this. Thoughts?
  2. I had some great discussions with the CO. During that conversation he contacted the local reviewer and got some kind of logs that showed he had indeed changed the requirements after my find!!! So I was allowed to relog the find. Whoo hoo!!! So all is good with this one now!
  3. I woke up to a log deletion email today for GC5E2Y2. I logged this as a find 1/1/2015!!! Yes....a couple weeks shy of 5 years ago! The CO is saying that I don't qualify for the challenge. I have to look at that....but I was looking at the cache logs and the cache had been disabled after I signed the log because the requirements had to be changed. So I have no idea if the current cache page requirements are the same as the day I signed the log. But should a log be allowed to be deleted after FIVE years like this? Seems COs should be doing their checking a lot closer to when a log is first submitted. This messes up stats for the year, milestones, and is very aggravating. I'd like to bring this up with someone that can restore my log and prevent it from being deleted again. Anyone know who I should be contacting to dispute this log deletion?
  4. On the Wherigo page it says that the default is to put a downloading cartridge into the Groundspeak/Wherigo/Cartridges folder. In the WhereYouGo tool the default cartridge location is /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/menion.android.whereyougo/files folder. I'm not able to download anything into the first location.....and if/when I can do that then I'll need to figure out how to change WhereYouGo to have the same cartridge location as the download location. I can't see that I can change the default cartridge location in Wherigo. I don't think I even have a Groundspeak/Wherigo/Cartridges folder. Is this the location name or should it be something else?
  5. Yes, I have a Samsung phone. I go through the Geocaching app and find a Wherigo cache i want to do. On the cache page there is a link to get the cartridge. That link takes me to the Wherigo site where I have to log in, etc. I then try to download the cartridge.....saying that it's a Pocket PC device. This way worked for my last Samsung phone. I don't know if I've configured it to put it into the correct spot on the phone or.....? Kind of frustrating. And as a result I can't do them anymore...... Thoughts?
  6. Got a new phone and now I can no longer download Wherigo cartridges. When I try to download from the Wherigo site (specifying Pocket PC Device).....I get a popup that says: Checking File The link you provided seems to be invalid. Any ideas? Thanks!
  7. Yes.....I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 if that makes a difference?! And Yes I'm using the Android WhereYouGo app. Hope someone can help me out!
  8. I got a new phone a pit ago and I cannot seem to be able to figure out how to get the Wherigo cartridge download to work. It worked on my old phone. When I try it I get a popup that says: 'The link you provided seems to be invalid.' Any ideas on what I need to do? Thanks!
  9. So, for the challenge caches in question that are located in southern Michigan......about half of them had a puzzle element to them.....meaning you had to 'solve' something before you could figure out where the prize was. In most of these cases the coords were easily determined. I think this was an attempt by the CO to semi-limit the number of visitors to a cache. Once I figured out how to solve the puzzle element of these challenge caches I was free to seek out the prize.....which I did. But it wasn't until I got home and was told by the CO that my 'notes' were about to be deleted that I actually read 'his' rules about needing to qualify for the challenge before going after the caches. He didn't even wait for me to figure out which ones I actually qualified for before deleting my logs. I looked on the cache pages and there were plenty of other non-smiley notes. Because I had run into a muggle at one of the caches.....I think that put him over the edge and he must have gone into a note cleanup tirade. To be clear....the CO has no problem with my logging the challenge caches down the road when I actually qualify. He just didn't want the notes. I think having the notes there is believed to show other cachers that they could seek the caches before they qualified....and thus produce additional traffic at the caches which increases the likelihood of them being muggled.
  10. These were not 'intricate' challenge caches. And in the end....most caches end up being muggled or somehow disappear. So why even have geocaching? I think the people posting here are starting to get off topic a bit. There are rules to geocaching....and cachers are seeming to interpret these rules in different ways....although some of that is because of how the rules have evolved over time. The rules continue to be refined over time and that's usually a good thing. Cachers should play to have fun....however they define that fun.....while abiding in the rules. Whether or not you think challenge caches should be found by those that don't yet qualify....the deletion of the 'note logs' is what this thread was originally talking about.
  11. It wasn't an environmental issue the CO was worried about. It's a maintenance issue. With more visits there are more chances muggles will see people at those sites and the caches will go missing. He's had to replace lots of containers apparently and so this is his way of trying to prevent that from happening. And he used me as an example.....because a muggle stopped to ask me if I needed help while I was at one of his caches. I said I was ok....and the muggle asked me if I was geocaching. We had a long conversation about it. This is what the CO is trying to prevent.
  12. When I'm out and on the road caching.....and far away from home....I typically cache. I don't spend all day reading cache page information to know if I qualify for a challenge cache or not. I sign the log and save the reading for a day when time is not quite so precious. Using the notes allows me to 'see' what I needed to check out later. I typically add these challenge caches to a bookmark now so it's easier to see the additional work I still have: either to figure out if I already qualify or to see what else I need to do to qualify. I find it hard to believe that a cacher wouldn't want to sign a challenge cache log when they're hundreds or even thousands of miles away from home.....as the chances are probably pretty slim that they'll get back there when they do qualify.
  13. I was 2000 miles from home....and just happened to notice the challenge caches as I was caching nearby. I still sign challenge caches as I come across them in my local area......but when I'm so far away from home I'd especially want to sign the logs because I may never make it back to those areas.
  14. I have had several notes with the CO in the past day or so. I think he understands challenge caches differently than I do.....but perhaps he was around before the newer rules? Part of his beef with cachers going after his caches is that with increased traffic there is an increase in the chance that the cache will go missing (due to muggles seeing the additional traffic). Here is a snippet of my correspondence with the CO that indicates where his mindset it: "It is not a new thing that you have to qualify for a challenge before finding and logging it. It is the principle in which Challenges were based. When we finish caching in all 50 states, we had to travel back to California to find final to complete the challenge. We made it clear in the description that this is the requirement. I am also sorry you don’t understand our reason to protect the cache hides by limiting excess visits. One of your logs even mentioned running into a muggle at the cache (for with you didn’t qualify). We have already had instances of this cache going MIA." Many, many thanks to everyone that's weighed in on this topic! I really appreciate it!
  15. There seem to be more and more challenge caches popping up everywhere. And almost always they say in the description that the logs can be signed before qualification and that you can then get the smiley when you do qualify. In these cases what cachers seem to do is go online and log the visit (and non-qualification) with a note log. And then bookmark those caches where they could then get a smiley later. This is what I do. Last week I had a business trip to the midwest that took me to a bunch of really great areas that I've never been to. I found myself in a place that had a bunch of challenge caches some of which you had to solve a puzzle to figure out where the container was. I didn't read the cache page descriptions except to figure out if the cache was at the posted coordinates or if something needed to be figured out. I then logged my visits with a note log. A few days after returning home I got an email from the CO saying that I wasn't supposed to do this as per the cache page description and that if I didn't qualify I shouldn't have visited the caches in the first place. Well, I didn't know that was the 'rule' for these challenge caches. Today, I had all my note logs deleted. Pretty depressing really. I'm used to challenge cache owners saying you can visit the cache at any time and then logging things down the road when you do qualify so this behavior seems very heavy handed and not particularly nice. So is this just me that thinks this CO behavior is strange? I live 2000 miles away from these caches and it's not like I can work on the qualifications and then get back to then get the smiley (not cheaply anyway). I'd be interested in hearing what other cachers think about this log deletion practice. Maybe the California challenge cache owners are just nicer? And what does Groundspeak think about this practice?
  16. When I go to the Pocket Queries screen in gc.com on my Android phone (using the Dolphin browser)....and I click the Preview In Google Maps button I get a new screen that contains no map and no caches. It's just a blank box. I can use Preview Pocket Query and see the list of caches in that screen.....but then if I say Map This Location I get the same blank map box. Does anyone know how to fix this so that I can see the caches in a preview screen or map page? Thanks!
  17. I briefly scanned the forum but didn't see anyone else complaining about the problems with PQs after the recent 'upgrade'...so thought I'd post my issue. Since that upgrade my PQs show the desired caches with the lightening bolts.....and every single other cache, already found or not! It's ugly, busy, distracting, and unwanted. So if I have a new cache query that should list 10 caches....I see 10 lightening bolts....and thousands of other caches. Is anyone else seeing this? Do I have to recreate all my PQs to 'fix' this? Or is there a master setting some place? New features are great and all but there sure seems to be a lot of churn getting them.
  18. My 60CSx died today (starts to power on but then slowly fades away). Bummer. Was thinking of having at the 62S...and have spent a lot of time reading through the first part of this thread. Are folks that are getting the 62s nowadays still having the squeaking issue? Seems like Garmin would have had plenty of time to fix the issue so I'm hoping current units being shipped are ok. Would love to hear from those that have been receiving the units recently! Thanks!
  19. So where does one start this 'trail? A 4wdr vehicle is needed? That's a lot of caches.....how many DNFs were there? You ever figure out your 'caches per gallon'?! HA! I'd like to do this trail over a couple or few days. Or until I/we (hopefully there would be a we) got tired of it. Bet someone got a lot of FTFs when these puppies were put out!
  20. They need to reprogram the robots so their logs say more than just 'l'. At least the robot could come up with a nice random log that at least looks legit!
  21. Yup....I deleted their log from one of my caches. Cheesy practice. I just wonder if this is a small test of something bigger to come.......
  22. I also noticed this and I see this as a big problem. I sent the Groundspeak folks an email and they said to see if anyone else was having this same problem and to append here if I saw the same issue. Not very customer friendly. Anyone else having this same problem? Hope it gets fixed soon!
  23. Hi all, Thanks for all the GREAT appends! I really do appreciate all the feedback. To clarify a couple things based on questions in the previous appends.....the cacher knew I was geocaching as I had my GPS device in my hand. It was also in a shopping center.....way out of the way. When I arrived at this location I actually saw the cache....which was in a sprinkler attachment. It was even camod to look wet! Nicely done in fact. But....rather than play with someone's pipes and risk messing them up I thought I'd first check everything else out first. I was in the process of doing that when the other cacher walked up and snagged it. He had much more geocaching experience than me...more than 10 times my number of finds.....over 5000 finds I believe....so he'd 'seen it all' before. He and I have since exchanged a couple of emails since our meeting. They were really nice emails. He said he didn't intend to step on any toes and even apologized. I really appreciated the emails! Restored my faith in geocachers! He also said that because he knew the person that had hid the cache...that he essentially knew what he'd need to be looking for....since he'd seen many of this person's other hides. So he had that on his side too. Oh well. I do like to be the FTF. But I know in the future I'd always offer to be co-FTFers with all those present. Thanks again to all those that responded to my question about etiquette! I now know there are no hard and fast rules. I can't control how others cache....but I know I really enjoy the times when I come across other cachers in the field....and get to know who they are and where they come from. Thanks!
  24. I've been geocaching for about 4 months now and clearly have the bug. I came across a geocaching issue today that really bothered me so I wanted to see if it was just me or of there are any kinds of rules of the road for geocaching. I saw a brand new cache show up in my area today....so I left work and hustled to that area. I was there alone for a few minutes and was 2 feet away from being the FTF when another geocacher drove up, got out of his car, and walked straight to the location and picked it up....thus becoming the FTF. I had stopped what I was doing to chat and thought the new cacher would give me a chance to find it first since I was there first but....he went straight to the cache and picked it up. So, in a situation like this what should be done? Is all fair in love and geocaching? I've gone after caches before and was asked to stand back while the other cachers continued their search....and I did that. I'm really unhapppy about how this went down today so I wanted to see if it was just me or if this other cacher was out of bounds in any way. I'd also like to know this so I know how to act should this ever happen again! Thanks!
