  1. is there any way we can get rid of the "reverse wherigos" or is this something that will skew the numbers forever?
  2. Thanks for the invite. I've built some cartridges with the original builder and many with Urwigo. I hope this will bring new options to wherigos that are not available now such as checkers against altitude and time.
  3. I have read that you can do projections in cachemate too. I have never done it, but here's the how too from another forum. "To do this pull up the cache you are working on in cachemate. In the drop down menu go to the "Calc" drop down. From there click on "Project Waypoint". This pulls up a screen where you can enter the bearing and the distance (in km, m, ft, nautical miles, and standard miles). Once you do this it will create a new entry for the projected waypoint and give you the coordinates for the projected waypoint."
  4. Try http://www.geochecker.com or http://evince.locusprime.net Steve
  5. I have been using a Vista for a while. I have tried a few different brands of rechargables. For me, I like the Duracel 2650 mAH NiMH. They're the green and black AA batteries. I have been out caching for several 8+ hour days. I start the day with fully charged batteries and I haven't had to change in the middle of the day yet. I also go on several jump out and hit one or two caches on the same batteries, so over all they last over 10 hours easy. I haven't run on the same batteries until their dead, but I can say they last me at least 10 hours. Some I have tried and don't like: Energizer Lithium (silver and black) -- they worked fine the first time, then didn't work at all after recharging. I put them in a flashlight - worked, tried a pocket radio - worked, used my tester - showed full charge but they wouldn't even power up the GPSr. I still use them, just not in my GPSr. LENMAR Rechargable NiMH -- only lasted a few hours on a full charge NoMEM 2000 mAH NiMH -- only lasted a few hours on a full charge. I also had a pair of these that totally died after about the third use. They wouldn't take any charge at all. I tried them on three different chargers. These are just my results, hope it helps. Steve
  6. Just put a link on one profile pointing to the other, and vice versa. Steve
  7. Your Caborcher profile only has 13 finds and is less than a month old. If the team name doesn't have an account yet, I would have Caborcher renamed to the team name. If the team name does have an account, I would go back and log finds on the 13 caches under the team name account and add that you originally signed the log as caborcher. I think there is a way to have two accounts merged into one, but I think that would be more work than just relogging the 13 finds. Steve
  8. I keep forgetting to mention... As far as deleting logs of legit finds, if you say in the cache page that the seventh person gets to claim FTF and someone else claims it, I would suggest sending them an email requesting they change their log. If, after a few days, they don't change it, you would be fine with deleting their log and sending them an email explaining that they can re-log it without the FTF claim. All in all I think the whole thing is pretty silly. The thought keeps coming up that the FTF hawk would just watch the listing until 6 people find it and then swoop in and find it as the seventh and then still be the official FTF. Then the jokes on you. Steve
  9. Ok, I guess I completely misunderstand what you are trying to achieve. If you just want to joke about who has FTF bragging rights, I revert back to the Fifth To Find so the letters match up. Steve
  10. So you like getting the FTF on caches, but this other cacher keeps beating you to the cache so you want to get them to back off? Is that about right? Have you tried to talk to this other cacher? Ask them to back off a bit and give the rest of you a chance? Or how about making friends with them and maybe going out after the FTF together? I don't see the win-win if they get upset. Steve
  11. That would be very silly making the seventh person the FTF. If anything they would be the STF (Seventh to Find). Now if you're going to be silly about the FTF, make it the Fifth To Find, at least then the letters match up. I don't get the whole FTF races. Some people live for them. I look at it like they are verifying the coords for the rest of us, so give them some credit. So are you going to have a FTF prize that only the seventh or whatever finder will be allowed to take? And if no prize, what's the point of who get's the FTF credit? Steve
  12. I do like the sounds of the hide. I have an idea of how you're going to do it, but that's just my idea and probably wrong. Anyway, back on topic. I don't know of any real way to verify each find without visiting the logbook except a pic of each cacher with the cache in hand. Most earthcaches I've done required a pic of me with GPSr at the location, so that ALR is possible. As far as a code in the container, or the penny-penny idea, there are flaws and ways around each one if someone really wanted to. Steve
  13. Actually, now that I think about it, the real issues here are: 1. Are you really that concerned about verifying every log? and more importantly... 2. Anyone who has access to this forum now knows that you are thinking about putting a cache 80-100 ft up a pole, and there is a way to get it down without climbing. So if I were in your area, that would make my find quite a bit easier. Steve
  14. When I first read this, it sounded like a very clever idea. The issue I see is that not all cachers log their visit online. And some don't log for several days because of being busy, on a vacation, etc. So if a cacher swaps pennies, and doesn't send the email and another cacher comes along who does send the email, they wouldn't have the same date as you have on record. There's no real way for you to know if your date is valid and their's isn't. If you are just wanting to see how many different dates go through your cash, this wouldn't be that big of an issue, just a missing penny now and then. If you are going to use this as a verification like you said, then you may be challenging some of the legit finds. I like the sounds of the hide itself. Steve
  15. Great! I'll look for you there. Thanks! I won't be buying anything until early May. I'm just doing my research and dreaming right now. Steve
  16. Well, it sounds like Magellan is out I was kind of turned off by the flashlight/camera/voice recorder that it lists as features. I'm going to stop in to Bass Pro Shop this weekend and see if they have the OR300. My son and I will be going to: GC1KRZM Get Up and Get Out - Geocaching Symposium GC1K85E Detroit/Belle Isle Year IV GC1M7H8 Belle Isle Spring CITO & Pot Luck PicnicGC1M7H8 I'm hoping that the my wife and daughter will go to the CITO too. These are the first events we have ever attended and we're really looking forward to them. We have met several cachers on the trails, so there should be some familiar faces. There are several that we haven't met, but have found their caches / exchanged emails and it will be nice meeting them. Steve
  17. This is an awesome father/son activity. My son (10) and I have been caching for almost a year now. We will get our 400th find tomorrow. We have been together for every find. My wife and daughter (6) go with us once in a while, but usually it is just the two of us. We really like going for the hiking/biking caches in parks. These are usually the small/regular sized caches that have swag and tradable items. Any more, he is finding the cache before I get zero'd in on it. We have hidden some caches, and have travel bugs and geocoins that we also watch when we're not out caching. Make it an adventure and not just about the cache. If you find some caches, that's a bonus, but make it about the time and adventure that you share. And thanks for all you've done. Have a safe trip home. Steve
  18. For off road hand held units they only have Garmin and Magellan. How does the Magellan triton 2000 compare? I haven't found if it can go paperless or not. It has a camera, voice recorder and flashlight. There's a couple events coming up I'll be going to. Maybe I'll be able to try one out there. Steve
  19. I was looking at the specs for the PN-40. Can you load cache pages to it for paperless like you can with the OR and the CO? I think I'm down to either the 60CSX or the OR300. I think I'd really rather have the CO300 but that isn't available to me. Neither is the PN-40 for that matter. I'm going to be using my Staples rewards bucks for a large part of the purchase, and they don't carry either of those. I like the paperless aspect of the OR, but I'm not a big fan of the touchscreen. I'm going to have to go find one somewhere and see it in person. My son just wants me to hurry up and get one so he can officially have the Vista. Steve
  20. I've read lots of threads about which GPSr is better than the next, but what is the flat out best one for caching? If I wanted to buy a GPSr specifically for caching, which would be the one? I've been using an eTrex Vista for a few years now for geocaching and boating and others. I'm looking at getting a new one and I'm torn between a couple different ones. I like the Vista HCx because it looks like it would do everything I want, plus all my Vista accessories will work on it. I was also looking at the 60 CSx and then there's the Oregon and Colorado where I can have the cache pages on the GPSr. I do have a palm that I use for paperless, but one less piece of equipment is always nice. So if I wanted the best GPSr for caching and caching only, what is it? Steve
  21. Well, nobody would have to solve the entire cube. You could solve for each side and write down your results as you go. Or you could note where each piece of the cube belongs and fill in the grids accordingly. You wouldn't even need to twist any pieced this way. Or someone could tear it apart and put it back together or not. You may find a busted up cube on one of your maintenance runs. As for the rest of it, I don't like a multi with a lot of dead ends. If there is a container there that will tell me it's a dead end, then that's different. At least it would tell me I'm done looking in that location. I would say hide it. Keep an open mind and maybe modify it if you don't get the finds and/or logs you are looking for. Some people are gonna love it, some are gonna ignore it. Steve
  22. I have an eTrex Vista (buttons on the side) with a handlebar mount. I don't have any problem riding down trails and changing settings on the go. I guess it's probably one of those "whatever you're used to" things, but I would think it is easier for the side mount buttons because I can grip the GPS while working the buttons. If the buttons were on the face, the bumps on the trail may make it hard to hit the right buttons. But then, if that's what you're used to, you would say I'm way off. And a touch screen seems even more dificult to use on the go. Steve
  23. I have been using plucker on my palm. I have GSAK on my computer, just haven't gotten around to setting the palm up. I don't get any maps or pictures which I would like, but I get cache descriptions, hints if needed, and the last 5 logs. Steve
