  1. OK, i typically cache in the urban and rural areas, not in the woods I typically have the car, so I take with me GPSr USB to Micro and mini usb cables power inverter netbook blackberry pens and pencils hiking stick I leave all but the GPSr, the blackberry, hiking stick and pens in the car in the car
  2. i am experiencing the same issue. for a few weeks when i first got my storm, i was able to save the GPX files directly as attachments from my e-mail, now they show up as "TEXT/XML" and do not download at all. Unless i open the e-mail on my PC and forward it back to myself. NOW.... the newest version of cacheberry opens the ZIP files, which i can save directly to my device
  3. just a idea off the top of my head..... for those of you who want to have ALR's and other caches that Groundspeak does not allow, why not make your own site. correct me if i am wrong, but Groundspeak does not own the word "geocaching" so you could infact start your own geocaching site. personally i love the idea of webcam caches and sending a pic back of something. I was going to make a cache where you had to send an e-mail to an address listed inside the first cache and you would be automatically mailed the next coordinates, cause i think that would be fun for those of us who have cell phones and PDAs
  4. i hit up a few cemetary caches this weekend... all during the day (i don't like cemetaries in the day, why would i go at night) first one was in what was probably a shrub at onetime, but not a tree.... a metal staple/nail had been hammered into the tree and the match container resting in the middle.... nice and easy - reach in grab, sign, repplace and leave second one was in the brick work of a structure, little bench and water pump area. removed the stone that was out of place, grabbed container, and signed and returned. now, i would never put a cache under a shrub that is near somebodys grave out of respect.
  5. just a quick question. I want to come and all. The website says Registration is free, then turns around and says $35.00. Which is it Free or $35. I could care less about a goodie bag, just want to meet some other people who cache.
  6. Logan County in the House!!!!
  7. ok, silly question.... I loaded a free topo map onto my Venture HC. since it has limited memory, what happens when i don't need a particular topo for an area. How do i delete it? Will MapSource just start overwriting them?? I think i am just missing something.
  8. that ammunition should NOT be left as a cache? There is a user, who hit a cache on my watch list and i noticed he left a 45 cal. bullet as his signature item. I did e-mail the user and let them know that it CLEARLY states this in the FAQ [blockquote]Explosives, ammo, knives, drugs, and alcohol shouldn't be placed in a cache. Respect the local laws. All ages of people hide and seek caches, so use some thought before placing an item into a cache.[/blockquote] and i suggested that he remove the item from the cache, and not leave any more bullets. Was i correct in e-mailing this guy. I did so out of respect for the sport, and so that he would be aware that leaving those sort of item is not only unacceptable, but could cost the sport some prime locations (city parks, state parks, private lands)
  9. ok, call nikon. they may tell you that for $$$ they can send you a refurbished unit witha 30 day warranty on it, in exchange for your old one. I just went out and got a Canon Powershot A300, it is a nice little camera. I had been using my Sony Mavica FD-95, but the thing was so big, and I was going on vacation, and didn't want to have to lug it around. The canon did great. It was like $240 Granted it didn't have the features the Sony has like 3:2 ratio mode (lets you shoot full-frame 4X6 pictures, which most camera's image would be chopped off on the top and bottom) and it uses AA batteries (but if you get the 1850 MAH Ni-MH batteries, it is no problem)
  10. it would be great if we could leave cheap little digital cameras in the caches that hold mybe 20 images. then weekly or bi-weekly go and grab the camera, download the pics and erase the camera and post the pics. However at the lowest price of $30 each, I don't see myself leaving a digital anywhere Of those who leave a camera in your caches, what kinds do you leave. Right now i have one of the kodak camera, not waterproof, but in a ziploc
  11. I find $75 a little steep for a license, which is probably only good for 1 year. I paid 10 for the radio, only wanted all the frs bands (current radio only had 1-3) one other question: there is suspodily an emergency frequency on gmrs; is anybody monitoring this channel???
  12. I have a GPS 310, and have the same issues. I have found that just because it does not show the extra digits, it does send them on the data output cable. So I just hook up my data cable to the palm and zero in better
  13. there are 2 caches located at Kiser Lake State Park.... that is going to be a 20 minute drive along SR 36 eastward, and north on SR 235 if you are wanting to go farther, there is one in bellefontaine (mine) and one at Indian Lake State Park Kiser Lake is a NO MOTOR lake with plenty of fishing. Indian Lake is a motor lake
  14. The article was in the newspaper today, FRONT PAGE!!! check out www.examiner.org or my geocaching page at www.weekendsusa.com/geocaching
  15. Today was the day the article came out You can see the article at www.examiner.org This ran on the front page, Above the fold
  16. the first time I went out to maintain the cache (or just check on it) was a week after being placed and having 3 finds.... i wne t straight to it w/o GPSr Today I went to find it and the vegatation was over grown and didn't find of first attempt w/o GPSr... I went back with the GPSr and palm and let my friend find it.... we found it and took our pictures and re-covered the cache... Newspaper guy didn;t call....
  17. I have a cache placed, since I go by the cache location on an almost daily basis, I tend to go to the cache and make sure it is still there, not actually opening the cache. Should I be logging my "check-up's" since I am not changing anything in the cache
  18. it's my cache, i need to verify and maintain it anyways. Not to mention I want to put some better things in it. It should take me about 3 minutes to verify, just walk up look at the container and say "yep still there"
  19. I recently contacted my local newspaper to see if they would like to run an article about Geocaching. The reporter contacted me today and we are going out to my cache so he can take a photo thursday. I got to verify that my cache is still in place, then put some nice stuff in it? any suggestions

  21. you should contact the governing authority of the area where you wish to place the cache... i.e.: Local park ranger's office, city parks office, land owner, county commissioners office, etc... Many places are more than happy to consider geocaching if you ask nicely. It is better to ask for permission, then to beg for forgivness after they find an unauthorized cache. My local City parks department approved geocaching, they said they don't care where a cache goes except that well-worn paths not be created, and it is out of their mowing areas, and the caches follow the guidelines of geocaching.com here is a link to the copy of the information packet I sent out GeoCaching Information Packet it is an Adobe PDF file
  22. verizon has their own access, #777 is the number to access it I take a wireless and wired network card for my laptop wherever i go
  23. I have Verizon Wireless with America's Choice Coverage My last 3 phones were Quallcomm/Kyocera phones the QCP-860 thinphone, the QCP-2035a, and my 2235. All three had a data cable that hooks up to the serial port and then to the camera. I can dial up and get 14.4Kbps access to the net using my normal airtime minutes on Verizon you use #777 as the phone# and the following info with the Kyocera phones: install a standard 19200 bps modem on the serial port through control panel setup the dial-up networking connection with the username as "qnc" and the passworn as "net"; like I said above the phone # is #777 If you have the QCP-2235 and this does not work, you will have to call verizon's data division, as the phone is set to a different data protocol that is compatable with their high-speed data service (it is like $100 extra a month for the decent service), and the phone will have to be switched back down to the old standard digital data service via some hidden menu's I used to have an old motorola flip phone (analog) and had the data kit for it too, at 9600 bps (how slow) If I am going out caching for the day, I will take the laptop, palm, my portable printer, and will hook the gps up so I know where I'm going and then when I need to, I can download cache pages and print them out. I have a 900 watt power inverter in my van so that my laptop and printer stay powered too
  24. i saw then at galyyans the other night, columbus, OH on sawmill
