The Yinnies replied to GeoMonkeyz's topic in GPS technology and devices
And I have tried the Colodardo's and Oregon's and Dakota's and sent them back. But you do notice I do not usually state that. I am not like you and bad mouth other GPS's -

I am a Delorme person, but I love my Nuvi 500. The problem is the Wife has it and I need something for road routing. It might be on my Christmas list now. Thanks for all the work. -

Are they in your favorites instead of custom POI by any chance? Wow yep that's exactly what happened, thanks! While fiddling with the new gadget I transferred a bunch of geocaches to it as a POI file using the Nuvi macro. Those caches don't show up on the map screen unless I'm zoomed in pretty tight, which is a bummer But earlier on I noticed on the 295W there is a "GPX" folder in the file system so I tested by dragging one specific pocket query .gpx file directly into that folder. I thought it didn't work.. but now I see YEP it does! All those caches are put into the favorites folder, AND they show up on the screen no matter how far back I zoom! Now I just have to figure out a good solution to merge the two methods so all works the way I want it to work. Do all Nuvi models have a GPX folder in their system? Thanks! NordicMan You have a 295w, do you like it? Did you get it for road or combine of wifi and handheld? I was looking at them but I want the caches to show. It sounds like if you load a GPX file they will show, right? Thanks -

My Deformed PN-40 and 60 work great. The routing is OK but as a handheld I would not trade them -

I recently bought a Nuvi 295W and have been playing with the GSAK/Nuvi macro to toss in a bunch of caches onto it. Most of them dissappear from the map screen as soon as I zoom out. But there is a cluster of them that will stay on the screen no matter how far back I zoom. If I click on one of them a balloon pops up showing the "Name/Tra/N/GC####" But I can't display the detailed info on it and I have no idea how I did it... It's a frustrating tease! How do you like the 295W? I just want to see the caches coming up. I just use it for road routing. It would be nice to be driving and see them in the distance. I have no problems with my Nuvi 500, but my sister would like her Nuvi to show caches along a route. She travels a lot. Thanks -

It seems that it will only show those within a certain distance from your current location (default 2000 ft), and only if you set Proximity to Prompt or Alert. I have not experimented with setting the radius larger. Depending on your model of Nuvi, that may give some problems. It worked like a charm on my 650 and 660, but created some irritating behavior on the 2D map screen on my 755 (I can no longer touch a point on the 2D map screen and select that point - it will randomly pick one of the nearby POIs). So if I want this I have to stick with my nuvi 500. I was looking to get a new one. Thanks -

If your friend goes to Macro -> Run / Manage... and look at the list that pops up, does he see the macro? If you go to Tools -> Options, and look for "Application data", that's the directory you should find the Macros folder. That is where macros are stored. Chrysalides is there anyway to have a nuvi show the caches on the screen? Thanks -
Mine looks just like it did on my handheld. Thanks

My personal decision to go with the 62st was due to the visibility of the screen in bright daylight -- the 62st is superior (by a very substantial margin in my opinion) in this respect. Others have argued that the Oregon's screen is not a problem, or that the newer x50 units are better in this regard, but I tested the screens on various Oregon models (including the newest models) on numerous occasions, and always came to the conclusion that to ME, the dimmer visibility of the Oregon screens in bright daylight was simply a deal breaker. The screen on the 62st does not have this problem. If this is something that you think may be important to you, I would strongly suggest that you take a look at both in bright sunlight yourself to see if you are bothered by this. Do NOT just look at them indoors -- it creates a very false impression of what they will look like in "normal" use. Larry PS. In the end I opted for the st version for a few reasons. First, I just didn't want have to deal with downloading and managing the free custom topo maps. You can call it laziness, but I need to eliminate extra "busy work" wherever I can. It's bad enough that I have to deal with Birdseye images -- I don't want to add to the work. Second, I like the DEM shading, and this is not available when using the free custom maps. Third, I'm not sure about this, but I believe that the only way to load topo maps for the entire US is via the st version. I like the idea that I'll NEVER have to think about where I'm going (in the US) and change the maps I have loaded. I have to agree with him on the screen. Thanks

The 500 has topo 2008 in it.
-
Did you like it or was the PN-40 better? Thanks
-
Go to Topo 9.0 and sync. When the screen comes up g to the items on the GPS right side. Find geocaches and mark them with an X and then sync. Thanks

Did you find one?

I did dl the manual.. I certainly am doing enough reading.. Some makes more sense than others. I did get some helpful hints on the Delorme forum. I got the unit this afternoon. I immediately put a sd card in, installed the batteries and took it outside. After about 5 minutes, I had a fix.. Then I installed the states in my region. I used the "add to GPS" to add caches to the unit. So far it seems pretty straight forward. I won't be able to try it out until the weekend, but I am ready to go with 15 caches uploaded. I know that I am only scratching the surface. It came with a premium membership upgrade too. I have one question so far, if I have to change out the batteries, will I lose my cache uploads? TerryV6 Almost all units with a electronic compass you have to recalibrate the compass when you change batteries. You lose nothing and it takes a minute to do. I see you are from Wisconsin if you have problems you can e-mail me and I will try and help. I have a PN-40 and -60 and love them. Thanks

DeLorme Earthmate PN-60 Portable GPS Navigator

I have both the -40 and -60. I think they are great units. My Wife uses the -40 and loves itand I think the -60 is a better unit, but you cannot go wrong with either. For me it would just be a matter of what you can afford. If you have the money then go with the -60 if not you will not be sorry with the -40. Thanks -
I am looking for a day pack. It needs to be smaller as I will be having caching items and a sweatshirt and not much more. I would like it to have a lot of smaller pockets. Thanks

I am getting a HTC Desire on Friday. How do you load this app? Thanks
-
Otterbox or a holster?
-
How do you carry this type of phone? Do you use a holster, face plate, housing or a skin? I am looking into the HTC Desire and would like to know the best way to protect it. All of my other phones I use a holster, but this seems a bit large. I am not one to put it in my pants pocket unless I am sure it will be safe. Every phone I have had looks like new when I get rid of it. Thanks

Is there a Nuvi or other for car AND geocaching?
The Yinnies replied to FloridaFour's topic in GPS technology and devices
Hmm, that is an interesting way to use the proximity alert. I have mine set to 2000 ft and that enables me to see where are the nearby caches when I'm driving around. Your method sounds like a really great idea for using it as a handheld though. I'll give that a try. Thanks! How do you do this? My sister has a nuvi and they cannot see the caches while driving. I would be great to show them this. Thanks -
I am up for a new phone and was thinking about a smart phone. I am with Cellcom in Wisconsin and my choices are limited to what phone I get. It would be for on the go caching when I do not have my Delormes with me. I just would like to know the pros and cons on them. Thanks

Geocaching.com has some. They work good. Thanks
