  1. Thank you, THANK YOU, Electric Water Boy!!! So cool that you could retrieve this for us and send it on its way! Many thanks from me and my daughter...she's thrilled her TB is still in the race! JimAHS
  2. Yes...he obviously doesn't know how Travel Bugs work. If you look at his past TB finds and logs for them, you'll see he keeps them for much too long and others have to fix his mistakes. I don't think it's intentional, just ignorance. Thanks for your help....if you can do this, you'll be my daughter's hero!
  3. Greetings from California! I wondered if anybody who caches in San Antonio Texas can help me recover my 9-year old daughter's Travel Bug? We released it in Central California months ago and it immediately went missing. After several months the cacher who picked it up claims he dropped it in San Antonio under the Crockett Street Bridge...and said he had trouble logging the drop. After a few emails back and forth, it turns out he couldn't log it because he DIDN'T PUT IT IN A CACHE!? Surprising from someone who's been caching since 2002 (although only 36 finds) Anyway, here's the information he left, including a picture of him pointing to the spot he hid the TB. If someone could "GRAB" the TB and properly send it on its way, I'd be much grateful. The Travel Bug is named Popcorn Max 25. ---from his log on the TB page-- Droped this Bug In San Antonieo Texas. Under a Crocket st Bridge next to a table behine a drain pipe at ground level. Cant seem to log it so this is the information.29'25,539n 098'29,280w $/16/08 10:53am http://www.geocaching.com/track/log.aspx?l...9d-5fa6020c05a2 ---------
  4. Don't know if this is the appropriate place to put this, but Sacramento's NPR affiliate Capitol Public Radio had on it's local interviewing show, Insight, an interview on Geocaching. For those who are interested, here's the link: http://www.capradio.org/programs/insight/ Search for the archive for February 25. It was the last of three interviews...so fast forward ahead to the last third unless you want to hear about eating disorders and a local author.
  5. Great thread! Here's one I found on my recent trip to Oregon. Tunnel Vision ...by nutn2ez This is an abandoned railroad tunnel along the Oregon coast...amazing to imagine that a train passed through here because on both ends there are drop-offs to the shore below with no trussel or tracks anywhere nearby (that I could see). Many of the locals I've talked to didn't even know this place existed. And here's one I recently came across in my neck of the woods. Telegraph City...by Isolino JimAHS
  6. Desperately hanging on to my 39th year...the big 40 this summer Sometimes drag along my 10 and 8 year old girls...they like the goodies. My 37 year old wife just puts up with my hobbies and occasionally will be in the car waiting
  7. I'm actually using a GPSr I got for Christmas last year (before I had even heard of geocaching) that is used for driving--a Mio Digiwalker...think TomTom, but cheaper. It came with a dashboard mount. Not the best for geocaching but I haven't decided to fork over the money to purchase a more appropriate device. Great for driving, a little awkward as I approach a cache...but it works for now.
  8. "McToys"...or any other fast food freebies. Oh yeah, and pocket change.
  9. Jim, while in Powers be sure to get up to Hanging Rock for an awesome view of the rugged Rogue River Wilderness. There's a cache there too - Hangin' Out n' Nat The weather is supposed to be decent for turkey day and into the weekend. Have a great time up here. That's so funny! I actually went for that cache this summer! But I was unprepared for the location, though, and I went alone. I let my GPSr drive me there, and that was my big mistake. It took me to the first turn off from Powers, rather than the most appropriate route. I drove my minivan as far as it could take me, then hiked about 2 miles before I decided I was not going to make it back before nightfall. I turned around and went back to camp. My wife's cousin took out his Oregon map with trails and GPS coordinates and showed me that I should have driven up a second turnoff which would have gotten me to the other side of the Panther Trail...much shorter hike. Lesson learned...maybe in 2008! Jim
  10. Thank you all! Bad Duck also emailed me with a bookmark of recommendations. I'm sure I'll only get to a few of these, but I travel to this area twice a year...every Thanksgiving and during the summer we camp 10-12 days in Powers...so I'll try to get to as many as I can in the upcoming years. In fact, I started this summer with a few caches, one by Popop! Thanks again...Coos Bay Cachers Rock! JimAHS
  11. I enjoy trying to get TBs on their way towards their goal, but I've inadvertently slowed down a TB on a race by putting it in a cache that was out of the way and rarely visited. It was picked up after four months and has rejoined the race, so I feel better. I was able to bring a TB to its final destination after it traveled across the country and back. Check it out here: GCGC7Z. Vermont Courier TB at Displaced New Englander cache. This was one of my favorite TB moments I'd guess most have had their proud and shameful moments.
  12. I was watching a Tivo'd Numb3rs when I read your topic...the current Numb3rs was still recording, so I switched over and checked it out. yeah pretty crazy!. How'd he get the altitude right for his cache though? He was on the top of a multi story building when he found the cache...couldn't he have been on the first or 3rd floor and found the same location. Must've been a hint on geocaching.com
  13. Hello Oregon Cachers, We go to Coos Bay (from California) every Thanksgiving, and this is my first year geocaching. I'm looking for some good caches to visit in the area...preferably greater than micros ( I have a few TBs to drop off), great scenery, or interesting caches for whatever reason. We stay at the Edgewater Inn and usually take a trip to the Shore Acres Christmas lights display. Keep in mind that we are there Wed night (after a 10 hour drive...no caching that night) through Sunday morning (back on the road)....so I'm not interested in really long drives...prefer rural/park settings to urban micros if you get my drift. Thanks for any help you can give
  14. Although it's good to know what these acronyms mean when reading others' logs, as a newbie I hope you don't assume that using the acronyms as the sole information left on your posts is appropriate. See the following thread: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=172314 "the lost art of logging" Many use the acronyms within their posts, but those who use only acronyms for their posting do not help improve the game or their fellow cachers. As a newbie myself, reading the forums has been very illuminating and has enhanced my geocaching experience. Good to see a fellow newb reading them as well. Happy caching!
  15. My name is Jim (duh) and I am part owner of a company in the Central Valley (California) with the initials AHS. I've used this as a user name for several different accounts...nice to have one that isn't taken.
  16. Hey, I'm Jim I was introduced to Geocaching on Memorial Day weekend 2007 by my wife's uncle who was visiting from Oregon. I quickly was interested and found a few caches in my own area. This summer was crazy tho...we moved from Manteca to Escalon California. I'm starting to get back into caching again. I glanced at the forums early on, but paid more attention last night and today after a geocaching activity last night. I was caching last night after work and was "caught" by a nearby homeowner. The event was minor, but made me feel awkward as I am very respectful of private property. Hence, I have been lurking the forums for a few hours. Thought I'd say HI. Jim from Escalon, California. Only 18 caches found so far ( in 2 states), no "official" caches left. Married, two daughters. Hey ALL!
  17. I agree with the two week rule, but I can understand how a month or so might happen occasionally. I picked up a TB while on vacation in Oregon that wanted to visit all 50 states. But I wanted to make sure it found some interesting place to drop when I got back home in California. I knew I would be going to the Feather River on Labor Day and waited until then to drop it. I felt bad holding onto the TB for a little more than a month, but I'm glad I did because I think I helped the TB along its stated goal. I guess my point is...it probably depends on the stated goal of the TB and how best you can help it on its way. (This is my first post....I'm a newbie)..JimAHS
