  1. No doubt you have realised that you have touched on a rather passionate topic amongst geocachers. It reminds me of the time when my friend and I went to our neighbour to borrow a fishing rod and Mr Rhodes-Harrison said with some reservation: "You know, a man's fishing rod or gun is a lot like his wife: you don't lend it out to just anybody - unless it's pretty battered", he said.
  2. Since Wazat is a KZN banana bloke - I'll say he started the Duzi canoe marathon...
  3. The bit I really like about the dedicated hiking/outdoors units (like the Legend and Oregon) is that they record tracklogs - great for planning, sharing with others or having a look on Google Earth where you have been. If you like hiking in the mountains then the tracklog ability, longer battery life, screen visible in bright sunlight, ruggedness and waterproofness is a plus. Besides it looks a bit naff to be found on the top of a mountain with a car navigation device! The paperless aspect of the Oregon and Nuvi can be a plus, but many cellphones these days can do the paperless part for you. I've always liked the Legend (even though I don't have one) - it has been around for quite a while now, so if you are into the latest in gadgetry you might go for something newer with more gizmos, but there is no doubt the Legend is a good solid unit that has stood the test of time and will do what it needs to do well.
  4. Ruffling feathers in the main forums as well (link)
  5. Taking a long shot GCMJN7 Raphia Palm
  6. For all the mountain goats out there: Goats on dam wall in Italy Coincidentally just yesterday saw a picture that also reminded me of our Table Mountain mountain goat expeditions (National Geographic November 2010 p36 - Glacier National Park, Montana)
  7. Ok I'm going to give in and add my guess. If I recall Abe Lincoln is one of the three on Mt Rushmore, and wasn't he a lawyer/attorney/solicitor?
  8. Decided not to guess - don't have a question at hand
  9. Hout Bay Corner it is. Your go Sawasawa...
  10. That was a bit of a lucky guess. Shows you how long ago I've been to Paternoster - the cache was not there yet. OK - what cache?
  11. Looks like Paternoster, but there is not a cache there, as far as I know. Maybe 16 Mile Beach (Yzerfontein)?
  12. Mrs B has said it all. Go for it and place your own cache. No need for you to contact the previous cache owner.
  13. I have been involved in something similar: A fine cache in a great location - no need to re-invent the wheel, but don't want a neglected cache on your home turf, so you go and do a bit of samaritan stuff. You have to go by your gut - do the samaratin thing once, twice, three times maybe and then you decide that's enough and then you either let it die by itself or help it die (needs maintenance/needs archived logs) and then do your own thing. Entirely your own choice as long as you play by the rules.
  14. Trevor7000 and Capedoc's replies refer. I quite like the addition of a personal element - especially (particularly) if it is a worthwhile cache in it's own right anyway (view, hide, puzzle, etc) . That is what makes us human. There would be the potential of it being a bit much if that was the only sort of cache about, but at this stage it is hardly as if it is becoming a trend. The caches mentioned: Simone's Surprise, Trevs home turf cache, Jessica, Nana's Cache are all great caches in their own right - the fact that they mean something special to the owner just adds to the specialness.
  15. I can do 17. 24 is a mountain goat hike I have on the cards for a long time, 31 a MTB race I am involved in.
  16. Just let it go. Life is far to short to worry about bogus logs. You put the cache out for people to enjoy themselves (hopefully) - if a few of the finders have somewhat different ways that spins their wheel or floats their boat (add your own metaphor here) then so be it. Getting involved with questioning or deleting logs is just a waste of time. Besides, it's just negative energy.
  17. I concur with Capedoc (believe it or not!). Thee's a lot of talk about this on the forums. A recent thread led to this lame cache example. You need to get the feeling that it was worthwhile to do the cache: I've solved a great puzzle I've learnt something new I've seen something new The cache owner has taken trouble (always appreciated)
  18. Where are the Latin and Greek experts - surely the first half of the word must refer to this. The anterior half of something? I'm getting confused. I'm outta here...
  19. Now that's a useful but of information that adds a name to something I've seen. Here are pollarded Plane trees in St Jean de Losne - start of our boating holiday in France earlier this year. I was so intrigued by the trees that I took a photo of them.
