  1. Please remove - ordinary rock, picked up on the trail and a question, whatintheheckis a worry doll?
  2. Currently a 2000 Saab 9.3. But I really, REALLY miss my 1988 Jeep Comanche it was old and rusty and dented. It would go anywhere, and do anything, and it wasn't afraid to get scratched or dirty. Basically everything you would want in a geocaching mobile. It was a sad day when it died at 210,000 miles.
  3. I was an option b-er until I saw this entry. It appears to me to have the best of both worlds. An actual recording and notifying log entry for the "DNF" and "Found it" and an epilogue to the DNF for log readers.
  4. Army 87-88, re-injury of a knee sent me home prior to my 4 years
  5. Wow, I carry a leatherman micro everywhere and rarely do I find a day that I don't use it.
  6. I look for a goat photo in every cache I find. Not sure why, but it's fun.
  7. If there's one thing I've learned from this thread it's that I need caching buddies.
  8. I don't have a whole lot of finds, but I look at it this way. Geocaching is kind of like Calvinball - the only consistant thing is that the rules change every time its played. (For Geocaching I interpret that to mean, everyone has their own set of rules). Sure there are guidelines for hides, but those are meant for safety and keeping things from getting out of control. I'm perfectly OK with that. I don't look at it as a competition, and definitely not a sport. To me, it's an activity. I'm glad others do it too because that means there is more of it for me to do. I added stats to my profile for my first find, my first out of state find, that's the kind of stuff that is important to me. Not that I don't enjoy seeing the other numbers too, They kind of give me an idea of how much time I've spent outdoors. I can understand how some people would want to log events, or games. Maybe it would help if there can be a way to differentiate between standard caching activities and event and game caching activities in the logs. That could keep both sets happy, the ones that don't want to see padded logs could ignore the event logs but the numbers would be there for the ones who care. I used to think that no one cared if I didn't log DNFs but since reading and participating in the forums, I can see that DNFs do serve a useful purpose so I intend to log them when I believe I have made a serious effort to find the cache.
  9. I think it's because it takes a certain amount of effort to do. Anything that takes effort naturally thins out the not so interested people. Then, all that's left are the ones who care about geocaching. You've probably been lucky enough to meet some of them.
  10. Watch out for what color you carry in urban areas.
  11. I have a Garmin Legend C (no x, bummer) I'm not sure if this is still the case but mine doesn't talk NMEA across the USP connector. I bought Franson GPSGate to allow me to use it with non-Garmin software (specifically, streets and trips) So right now I use GPSGate GSAK Microsoft Streets and Trips I hope to add a PDA to the mix but I'm not sure what OS it will have so I'll have to make a decision then.
  12. IMO, that's one of the great embarrassments of Wicca: the adherents who insist it's an ancient religion, when in fact it is a very recent invention that simply draws on ancient sources (and modern sources, as well). It's as if there's an insecurity about the religion, that a religion has to be old to be valid. Obvious nonsense, as all religions were new at one point. Of course, there are those who will dismiss Wicca precisely because it is new, but they are making the exact same mistake. The other great embarrassment of Wicca is the names. Lady Moonwalker Darktoast, etc. I mean, come on. What's wrong with "Sally" or "Robert"? Why do so many Wiccans insist on picking names that sound like they come from the Fuzzy Bunny Crystal Pagan Random Name Generator? /rant. I could really use a decent weekend. Sigh. Where can I find the Fuzzy Bunny Crystal Pagan Random Name Generator?
  13. I plan to make one of those for a co-worker's 40th this year - R.I.P Youth
  14. I've replaced the bulb in my mini-maglite with an LED purchased at Target. The light is more than sufficient for what I would use a mini maglite for in the first place. That being said, I also replaced one in a 2 D-Cell maglite and the results were not as good (but battery life is through the roof).
  15. You can find caches along a route. Go to your homepage by clicking your name in the upper right-hand corner. Look along the right hand column. In the premium features section, click "Find caches along a route" Follow the instructions!
  16. and I saw some plastic letters designed for stamping into cement/plaster at Michael's.
  17. I'm pro-gun and all but I don't have any so I don't carry. What I find interesting is how many people carry more than one GPS. I carry... GPS Printout of cache cell phone pen trading items, unless it's a micro. In the car just in case... Flashlight (I take it if I'm within 2 hours or so of darkness and it a little trip into the woods, I've never intentionally done a night find) Water (I've never felt the need to carry water with me, most caches in my area are <.5 miles from parking. the exception is when my son comes with me, he seems to need a drink every 100 feet or so) More cache printouts More trade items Laptop w/streets and trips - I hook my GPS up to it when I'm driving. I could probably put some of the cache info in my PDA, (an old handspring) In that case I could carry 2 GPS units (the module is only a couple of ounces) Way back near the beginning of this thread someone mentioned a mount for his laptop. If you see this message, could you post a little more info on that? Mine sits in the passenger seat or my wife's lap.
  18. Now if you could find some private land and build a complete fake cemetery (nowhere near a real cemetery), the possibilities could be endless.
  19. I got my first one because it was on the clearance rack (handspring visor accessory) but I did a search that night for what I could do with it. It took me a couple of months to find the time to start geocaching.
  20. ... or a battery operated remote doorbell. Find a cache with a button, press the button and listen for the next stage. ...or a motion-sensored Santa Claus that scares the crap out of you when you walk in front of it. It is well camo'ed and contains the coords for the next stage. I hope it would know CPR too!
  21. That's an excellent idea. But, I'm sure you already thought so
  22. 100 hours is good battery life for an LED light, but it is still only 100 hours. That would mean replacing the batteries every 4 days. Have you considered a solar recharger of some type?
  23. Connecticut only has 112 pages. Of the earliest ones (page 112) I've found the #8 and #6 oldest active caches. The first cache on the list was placed Dec 11, 2000. This perspective makes me want to focus on the older caches, there's history to them! But, I think I may have a record for slowest cacher. I started in 2003 and been caching slowly for the last 4 years. Only 21 finds so far. Children and Illness have been against us, but now that We feel better, and the child is older, the count will pick up pace.
  24. ... or a battery operated remote doorbell. Find a cache with a button, press the button and listen for the next stage.
