  1. renaming the file probably won't help but try downloading expertgps as some of the waypoint files you download can only be opened w/ expert...
  2. A new listing in WV GCJ940 would you try to be the FTF???
  3. another thing to think about is if you can insert the batteries upside down. don't you drive on the wrong side of the road "over there"?
  4. game, set and match for Keystone! back to work time.
  5. forgot the url for the tree tags Gardenmarker.com
  6. On my last multi I used soft metal garden/tree tags as micros. you write on them w/ a ballpoint pen and it embosses the coords onto the metal. they last much longer than paper/cardboard tags.
  7. As a long time coach at the high school level I enjoyed working with the team, watching them gel into a unit, striving as one for a common goal but at the end of the game, match whatever all that was published in the local paper was the score. having a better score than your opponent is more fun than the alternative. in geocaching my opponent is me. how can I lose!!! I'm having fun, getting exercise and working on a better score.
  8. Congrats and hope you have a load of fun as a family!
  9. While not a caching story InSTEP_Guy had just set up a platoon in a defensive position at Ft. Drum NY when a truck pulled up. the couple never knew that they had put on a "show" in the middle or our formation. we had a little trouble maintaining noise discipline but had a good laugh after they left.
  10. "The Count's Cache" skip this one, IT SUCKS!!! Jonathan Harker
  11. April 6, 1909 FTF!!! 90 degrees N latitude I don't know what's going on here but I was the first to sign the log!!! I just don't under stand why someone would log a find when it is obvious that they were nowhere near the cache. mabe they were just in the area and figured that was close enough!!! I think I'll contact admin and try to get Cook's account closed! Robert E. Peary
  12. April 21, 1908 90 degrees N latitude. I had to kick the cache container a few times to break it loose from the ice. Nothing in it but cheap compasses that wouldn't point correctly. TNLN parking coordinates would have been nice! terrain rating was TOO LOW! Frederick A. Cook
  13. If you haven't already checked try ... Online tutorial it has a ppt built into the tutorial
  14. US Army 1970-72 After my birthday "capsule" was the 6th one drawn during the televised lottery I joined the advanced rotc program at my college. USAR- 12 years after my active duty ended. an experience I'm glad I had but I wouldn't want it for my sons.
  15. Just wondering but is a cacher's feelings about virtuals and locationless caches related to the density of regular caches in their area? There are 71 caches of all types (excluding locationless) within a 50 mile radius of my home. frankly I can't be all that choosey with the cost of gas. I know I'll end up being jealous but how many caches are within 50mi. of your location?
  16. You know you are geocaching in West Virginia when no matter how deep in the woods you are you still find an old washer dumped in a creek and a rusted out '54 Chevy.
  17. Speaking as one who has been flamed for not providing parking coords I'm thinking of placing my next cache at the "Park & Ride" at the local interstate exit (I'll post the coordinates for sure!) and post my cell phone number. that way I can simply drive out to the exit and hand the cache container over and wait for them to trade and sign the logbook.
  18. On one of my early cache hunts I passed a car coming out of a parking area near a cache location. I noticed that the car drove about 60-70 yds. and then pulled over. I could tell that they were keeping an eye on me and my son. as we prepared to make the short hike I saw the car head our way. my son and I "prepared" for what looked like an encounter of sorts. the car pulls up and the driver mumbles a hello. after seeing the GPSr around my neck they got much friendlier. they put in their log for the cache that they had checked out some potential cache vandals. question: are you willing to defend a cache against unknown people?
  19. usually in the late afternoon and early evenings. sure beats hanging around in the hotel room!!
  20. old geocachers never die... so PLEASE don't start using child-proof caps on your cache containers!
  21. does that mean you got to do a write off for your gps, pda, laptop, gas for caching? All research for work? actually my laptop, GPS units (10 of 'em) and mapsource software are provided gratis to me by Project InSTEP. If I plan my caching trips and visits to area schools properly I even get milage!
  22. as my current position requires me to train teachers in the integration of technology into the school curriculum (including the GPSr) caching and the forums are actually a way to enhance my job skills. Is this a great country or what!!!
