  1. To wmpastor's comments... "Caveat emptor. When you seek a FTF, especially from a new hider, you run the risk of a problem hide. Want less risk? Let a couple of others find it first." I say amen! If you choose to be the "Beta Tester" you get what you get.
  2. After reading the farewell letter included in the OP’s comments I’d just like to say I used to really enjoy the geocide letters that used to frequent this board. I miss the drama, the angst and the heartfelt display of bitter emotions as a cacher declared that they would never return and the rest of us were instructed to make a journey to an uncomfortable destiny. Good Times!!!
  3. Any cachers from the Mid-Ohio Valley area attending GeoXIII who would be interested in caching the Tuscarora Trail (WVTim's overlook GC33J6Z)? If so the old guy would like to tag along.
  4. 1. Always mark where you park in unfamiliar territory. 2. Carry spare batteries. 3. Don't focus on the find at the expense of the fun of the hike!
  5. When I saw this topic I thought maybe it was for a new August souvenir. To be eligible you had to have gotten lost while caching and had to be found by a group of first responder folks. My mistake!
  6. After reading through this topic I would just like to say to all the COs whose efforts I failed to appreciate and whose sense of self-worth I did not properly validate in my succinct logs I would just like to say… Sorry
  7. I've combined vacation trips to nearby beaches with caching runs on the Bling power trail. Most hides are just by the roads but many go missing when the roads are graded. I was stopped on one occasion by a land management patrol and lectured that these caches have all been placed w/o permission. He didn't prevent me from continuing but he wasn't that welcoming either. Just my experiences...
  8. Keep in mind when geocaching in Amish country the caches require you to use only a map and compass!
  9. Many thanks to Mr K and the Chief. You both nailed it!
  10. Thanks for the speedy reply. I'll try again using your tips!
  11. When using Where To to navigate to a waypoint manually entered, after selecting the waypoint and then switching to the Compass view the compass shows the direction to the nearest geocache. I'm still learning to use this unit. Is this my error or a unit problem. All help is appreciated!
  12. Last summer I took a hard fall and was unable to hop out of the backcountry before dark. It made for a sleepless night in bear country!
  13. most cache hiders tend to take it easy on themselves so staying on the trail is usually a good bet. having said that I kinda' like busting brush!
  14. ditto on the Avalon Hill line of games (third reich, 1776, squad ldr.)
  15. Once I signed the log to a cache hidden in an old railroad tunnel with a chunk of coal that had fallen off of a train from years past.
  16. My only concern before driving down from the ohio valley area would be is the cache placed on public property.
  17. I've found that most people are more than happy to avoid eye contact or any type of contact with someone wandering in circles and mumbling to themselves in public places. (sometimes I'm even looking for a cache)
  18. I "try" to avoid micros in the woods with the following clue: "at the base of a tree covered by leaves and sticks"
  19. WVDan, congrats on #200 and enjoy the next 100!
  20. Male, 55 Married, 2 sons, 2 grandaughters Star Trek (Mr. Spock) C-64 slide rule holder on my belt wish I'd had a GPS in '70 when I was a supposed to be leading folks w/map & compass board games (squad ldr.,3rd Reich etc.) silent movies (german expressionism) Frank Capracorn enjoys the solitude of the hunt
  21. Coonskin Park (take the airport exit off I-64) has a nice selection of caches to choose from.
  22. If finders make sure the "O" ring is in place and the end cap tight the gc.com micro container will remain water tight!
  23. IMO a "true beliver" in the power of duct tape should be proud to display their creative use of it and would never use the transparent version!!!
  24. Thumbs Up from the Mid-Ohio Valley area!!!
