  1. I've put together a multi-cache where each cache adds another chapter of a narrative. I'm trying to decide if I should include multiple copies of it in the cache, so the finders can have a copy to take along, or just give them the chance to read it while at the cache. 2. I posted a question on the getting started forum about the purpose of verification and the purely theoretical possibility of a cache owner deleting finds. I was not even sure that the system would allow this. Brian posted a reply there, and I suspect that this thread was to bring the general issue to the larger general forum. I am a newbie and know nothing about the history of said war. I do think it is in general an important issue of sportmanship, and I appreciate its discussion regardless of the specific bad blood of any particular incident. I guess I have a lot to learn about this game, as I find it difficult to imagine how two cachers can get into a conflict, except in a flame war on these forums. I guess if you destroyed or defiled my cache, I would be upset with you, but why would anyone do that without prior antagonism? Are there any sanctions for cahcers who intentionally hurt another's cache? Nesdon "Sacred cows make the best hamburger." Sam Clemens
  3. so, if I have a cache, and I notice someone has logged online who has not logged in my cache logbook, can I post a nah nah nana nah about them, or even have their log expunged? But, what is then to prevent the troll cache owner from spuriouisly deleting the finds of their nemises? Maybe there should be a rogues gallery, a Groundspeak forum where those caught defiling the game though cheating can be publically pilloried. I have taken this to be like golf, where the cheater is duly punished by having to bear their guilt. I presume the vast makority of players are in this for a good walk enriched. I also cherish the generosity of placing a cache, sharing a favorite spot, offering treats to strangers. Oh, show me the love!! Nesdon "Sacred cows make the best hamburger." Sam Clemens
  4. Re: a thorny thread running in the general forum about duplicate verification as a red flag. One of the admins suggested that the originator of the thorn, might not understand the purpose of verification. I'm not sure I do. Are ther cases where a cache owner will challenge another player's claim of a find? Nesdon "Sacred cows make the best hamburger." Sam Clemens
  5. There is a ratings column, that only rarely displays a sequence of stars. Some on posts with 0 replies, where do the stars come from? (Other than the gravitational accumulztion of intergalatic gas and dust) Nesdon "Sacred cows make the best hamburger." Sam Clemens
  6. I soooo agree: quote:Originally posted by cmachler:Why do people take everything on message boards and on the internet in general so seriously? Not every disagreement or rebuttal is a personal attack. Everybody just needs to learn to chill. 95% of these "discussions" could be avoided if people didn't over-react and actually made an attempt to clear up misunderstandings. -Cody I've been posting things online from the earliest BBS days almost 20 years ago now (there were no women, and 90% angry teen geeks). Flame wars were the norm rather than the exception, and I discovered a few important rules. 1. Be extra polite. A plaful rudeness between buddies tends to read as a bitter slight when it cannot float away in the air, but instead can be read over and over and over. 2. Misunderstandings are inevitable, always check your swing and soften your reply. 3. Flamers often crave attention. Starve them. 4. Avoid sarcasm, it rarely plays as humor online. 7. I share these concernes a bit, hence my original post, but living on a private lane, we already face the risk of someone coming down here and then suing us. Kids just cruising the hills looking for places to party (we live within a half hour of LA) show up out here a few times a year. Mountian bikers and hikers frequently come through, and all out neigbors use our creek access all the time. I think most of us have friends who visit just for the great hiking around here, somehow it has seemed to me that cachers would be the least of our worries. I even wonder if such a cache, involving an invitation to walk a half mile of private road, would be approved. quote:Originally posted by Capn_Skully: quote:Originally posted by cwoper:I placed a Cache on my land(The "Kings" Cache)and got a nasty gram from TPTB that it needed to be removed.Seems that this uptight cacher was upset because he had to park on the side of my country road.He said that he sat there for 10 minutes and 10 cars went by and that it was a dangerous location.10 cars my @$$.Not in my neck of the woods!!! A complant was made,so I pulled the Cache.I just felt that if this guy spraned his ankel, got a scratch, got a slight sunburn while hunting my excellent and well thought out Cache ,"ON MY LAND",that this knuckelhead might take leagel action against me.Something to think about if you hide on your own land. That would be my fear. I could see a person suing me because he was searching for a cache on my property and he is allergic to cats or dogs. He / she sues me for putting him / her in danger. If a criminal can come on your property, break into your house, cut himself on the glass he broke and then sue your homeowners insurance for damages and win! Putting a cache on my own land and advertising it as such is just asking for trouble. _Vini Vidi Velcro I came I saw I stuck around. Capn Skully_ Nesdon "Sacred cows make the best hamburger." 9. I searched for that cache and couldn't find it. Can you direct me to rick so I can discuss the issue with him? quote:Originally posted by tmac:we have a geocacher here that has one on his property, old cedar trail by rick. email him & ask him directly what he thinks. i haven't heard of anything going badly for him. he also has neighbors next to the property that haven't complained too loudly. we had an event cache there last october, very nice! as i said talk to him directly. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ozmtngeocachers/join if you cache it, they will come. 10. I'm a fair newbie, and really loving it. We live on 8 acres at the end of a mile of private road at the edge of a wilderness area. We have a little parklike area on our land that we dearly love, and thought to share with other geocachers. My kids and I put together a wonderful cache to hide on our own land, but my brother in law, who lives next door, was freaked out that we would post our little corner of paradise on the web for all the riff raff to see. We argued that these geocachers must be respectful or the caches would all be destroyed. He's unmoved. I figure it's all in sight of our houses, so if there are any riff raff, we can just retire the listing. Am I naive to think that people would respect the requests we make in our listing? Has anyone else put a cache close enough to observe the traffic, or had people steal or vandalize in an area around a cache? Team Tomol Nesdon "Sacred cows make the best hamburger." Sam Clemens
