  1. I got out on what looks like my last weekend geocaching, here in Northern California, before heading home to Baja for the winter. Finally went and got Fizzymagic's Mind Your Master, it was a fun cache to solve. Solved the puzzle about 6 weeks ago and figured it was time to go get it. Plus I thought it would be a great find for #900.
  2. I don't see how anything smaller than this could hold a logsheet. Well, I guess the 1" is wide enough for the sheet, but trying to roll it up to be less than 1/4" is tough. To be a real cache, the container has to be able to hold a logsheet. I have found small magnetic containers that measure 3/8" in length and 3/8" in diameter, but those were parts of multis that only held a little slip of paper with the next stage's coordinates. Here is one, unfortunately they are out there, I found one today. They unscrew and a log 1/4 inch wide and 10 inches long fits in there just fine. And so it goes.
  3. I am in the Central Valley of California and getting Sat #47 from the WEST? Don't see anything to the south.
  4. I found a night cache in Alamo, California. I had so much fun doing it, I put one out at home in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico. Most people seeking this cache are cachers on vacation and just in the area for a few days. After one such cacher didn't find it following my 'fire flies', I posted the actual cache location so they would not come away empty and mad. Reason they didn't find it by following the 'fire flies' is a couple of the 'fire flies' were covered up by leaves on the Ocotillo Cactus after a big rain. Cache is GCHB61, San Felipe After Dark.
  5. Why do I think the hint will be, 'I haven't hidden it yet, but thanks for looking'.
  6. I have made a slight tweak to this macro so that the waypoint name now shows the cache name, type, container, difficulty and terrain. However, you can change this to suit yourself by altering the following line in the macro: edtWaypoint.Text=%name %typ %con (%dif/%ter) You can use any of the GSAK special tags after edtWaypoint.Text= to define what this name will display The macro works like a charm. This is great, I was creating a GPX file and opening it with Google Earth. Now I have a short cut, thanks Clyde
  7. And this is where I throw a monkey wrench in to the equation and say look at the customer support experiences for any unit you would like to buy. There are testimonials all over this forum, Hopefully you won't need customer support, but if you do, you want to come away with a good feeling, not a bad experience.
  8. I have the bosses old Blackberry, she just bought the Treo. Personally, I would wait a month of so as the prices of the Treo are dropping rapidly and that can only mean a newer version of a PDA/Phone is around the corner. I read on this thread, the 'Palm OS's' run is ending. I don't like the Blackberry because there is no stylus, everything is done with a thumb wheel, yuk. The Treo does have a stylus. Personally, I cache with a Garmin 60cs and a Palm Tungsten E, and they work just fine. I know what you mean about being able to go get those new caches but those urges will wear off before the cost of subscribing to a web service seams reasonable. Good luck.
  9. Sending them to the 'Travel Bug Graveyard', GC72A8 is about all you can do. They will be in good company.
  10. 2048 characters isn't enough? That's what you can put in there now (yes, it'll scroll) and, from what you're talking about, it seems like that should be more than enough. Well, there ya go. I was confused because I saw the last line under 'L' was 'TB'. I guess I was looking for a word like 'Other' or 'Notes', I didn't realize I could bring up TB and do a carriage return and then put my data there, this is a good thing. Thanks for the making me aware of this feature I didn't even know existed.
  11. Oh, that light had to be held by Ryan Tek (aka, Landing Light Lad). He introduced us to his shoulder strapped 'flashlight' at Wait Until Dark. Shortly into the night hike, the FAA had to detour traffic so they'd stop taking their final approach towards the fire-flies. I'm telling you, that kid's got a light that you can weld metal with. Good to know that Ryan and Ted are on your case. I remember that flashlight from the WUDstock event.... However I thought it was Peter who had it.. Don't know... Memory is one of the first things to go in ones old age!!! (atleast my wife keeps telling me I am old!) OK, I bit on 'Hot Potato' and sent it to friends in WY, OR and NV. I see the WY folks already entered it. PS: I too went out last weekend and got a few caches in Livermore, finally got around to Green Acres Code Cache.
  12. Sure would be nice if the Cachemate 'L' screen could be longer (even if one has to scroll). This would be a great place to log answers to questions for virtual caches AND to put in field notes such as 'big shady trees on the way to this cache' or 'nice new homes here', etc, etc. This would be great information to have for the log when posting a find at GC.Com When I get home, after finding 10 or more cache, I have forgotten most of the experiences. Just a request and I hope a simple one at that. Thanks
  13. Someone mention earlier that GSAK is not needed for paperless caching. Believe me, it pays for itself the first time you go out with a PDA and GPSr. Here is how: I download my PQ and then filter out all caches whose last two log entires are DNF's. I do this on a weekly basis. No more wild goose chases. If and when the cache is replaced/found, it shows up in the next weeks PQ. This has been a huge savings in the frustration arena.
  14. But wait, there's more. Now (beta version 6.9) it will display tracks on the latest version of Google Earth.
  15. Yes, they are a legend in their own minds. It's a long story so we won't go there.
  16. I would contact Garmin. A lot of companies, especially on auctions like eBay and ShopNBC sell these units and they ship from Garmin. It is new so just contact Garmin and they will give you an RMA and then you can send it in.
  17. For multiple Pocket Queries it's a time saver (one click) Well, that makes sense. I only run one area so that is why I was confused. When I head back home, to Baja from Northern California, I am going to do caches along a route and that will be multiple PQ's but only once so I couldn't see doing all the prep for the getmail command. Thanks.
  18. Could someone please explain the advantage of the getmail function in GSAK. It seems to me that a lot of effort went in to this funciton and many more hours of technical support have been laid out in this forum. I understand how it can be labor saving, BUT, if you don't use getmail, it is about a three click operation to get the file from email to GSAK, save the attachment from email, open GSAK, and then open the attachment. I just don't see where the savings are. I use macros to filter a file of waypoints, delete archived ones, delete any waypoints whose last to entries are DNF's, send these to cachemate, sent them to mapsource, send them to my GPS. That is a labor saving task. But I just don't get why the complex function of getmail exists to get a file from email to GSAK. Thanks.
  19. Obviously they are waiting for the hurricane(s) to pass since this is being launched from 'The Cape'.
  20. ("Re-hiding" New York was a highlight) Check the freezer, yea right, I knew somebody was up to no good Well, the rehide wasn't that bad. Of course we, team 9, got blamed for it but talked our way out of being the culprit
  21. We had a great time at that MAC Picnic in Merced yesterday. We took the tour of the Airplane Museum and then it was lunch time. Lots of great food and the tri-tip sandwiches were delicious. After lunch we broke up in groups and started the poker run. It was great with caches all over the base. I had not been here before so I really enjoyed it. bThomas, DavidT21 and I came in second with two pair. They had great prizes for ALL. Next thing you know it was time to leave, no, not go home, just do a little more caching before heading home. The MAC group put on a fabulous event, thanks guys and gals. The only problem was they couldn't get the SR71 started so we did not get rides.
  22. Now that you have cachemate on the palm all you need is something like GSAK to esport the caches to cachemate. Like the previous poster said, GPXSonar is for the handheld'PC' like the Dell or HP series.
  23. If you are still looking, I can verify www.GPSCity.com does in fact ship the product to you after you buy. Their current price is 397.95 with an $8 shipping charg. If you get the tab over 400 (like buying a lanyard or map cd, shipping is free. I have bought from them twice. Good luck with ShopNBC, after reading this thread, I won't buy from them.
  24. I never thought I'd see another 'I hate LCs' thread. Thanks for trying to turn this thread into one. Others might suggest that you stick to the topic, but not me. And do the LC caches make sense if you spend time in an area that does not have cache density? I know it is hard to believe that there are spots on this earth that are not flooded with 35 mm film canisters, or altoids tins, in light pole bases but these places do exist. LC caches give one a chance to go to interesting places and then use geocaching to post their experiences. Take for instance a small town that doesn't have ANY caches. In that town there are LC caches, such as an airport, carved wood doors, a lighthouse, a museum, just to name a few. The LC cache offers an opportunity to cache anywhere, not just where some pocket query indicates there are a couple hundred micros in parking lots (but that is a whole other topic).
  25. The information you are looking for is in the GSAK program help. I went there and typed 'backup' because I have seen what you are asking for in the GSAK threads for prior releases: Backup allows you to save databases and settings. This feature allows you to take manual backups of GSAK. You can then use these backups for system restore, or swapping information between computers and other GSAK users. This is a good way to transfer data and settings between your desktop and your laptop. GSAK backups are a collection of files in the standard zip archive format. Also note that GSAK can be configured to do automatic backups of your data and settings. Use the restore option to restore a GSAK backup. Click on any section for more information.
