  1. I noticed this a while back if my Vista was set for NiMH and I put in new Alkaline cells; once I changed the setting to Alkaline (default), everything was OK. What a difference 0.5 volts will make.
  2. While look interesting, I am not sure I would want to be the guinea pig.... first one who buys them, although the price is not bad. Are they any longer than the 2300 or 2500-mAh cells? The 2200's seemed a bit longer than the 1800's, so would the 2500 and 2900's be a bad fir in the Garmin units?
  3. I wonder what has actually improved from the 2006 version. I have the 2005 version on my 'desktop' PC and the handheld 2005 version on my PDA, along with the 2006 version on the laptop. The 2006 seems a bit clunky, although some of that may come from the fact that the Sony VAIO is sort of goofy (I hate the touchpad - even with the new drivers, it 'clicks' on things simply because the cursor happens to be somewhere), maybe when I upgrade to a new ThinkPad, all will be well .
  4. When the time came to buy the Jeep, I did a great deal of extensive research on my own and made the decision based upon my research (I have never been a fan of the Consumer Reports type of opinions, regardless of the media used). If somebody had come along and impolitely interrupted while I was discussing the impending deal with the sales rep, I would have very politely advised the person to wait his turn and he could speak with me or the rep after I am finished. By the way, some of my research was done in a couple of Jeep forums, but, because it was a newly redesigned model, I had to use the "IBM" It's Better Manually method, and nobody died from it. I have no wishes regarding how a forum's members act, but I sincerely believe that courteous behavior should always be a primary protocol. My point is not that dissent should be stifled, just that it remain within the highest standards of courtesy. By the way, in the Jeep forums where I did a bit of research, responses in a For Sale forum that publicly "disagree" with a posted price are deleted because approximately 90% of such posts are from members who are trolling (Gawd, I hope we never see that here!). All discussion related to online deals are encouraged to be taken to telephone, e-mail, and/or PM. If a person is posting clearly fraudulent information in a For Sale forum, that member is usually perma-banned.
  5. Sale pending........ awaiting arrival of check.
  6. Gee, maybe I should hang back a bit and wait for the 2 GB card to be released......... just like all things in technology, everything gets better (I think!). The 1 GB card, based on the above posts, should hold most all of what I need for the east coast states..... at least from NY to GA, with the 128 MB card carrying the NY/PA/MA/NH stuff. This will be interesting.... to see what fits where.
  7. Cool! Thanks for the link..... I was trying to search for something like that (but for the 76CSx) and came up with everything but what I was looking for. I wonder if the same limitations apply to the 76CSx (i.e., the 2025 maps maximum); if that is the case, then City Navigator should allow me to load the entire USA on one card for about $50.00 or less . Once I receive the unit, I will probably go ahead and order the larger (1 GB) card for it.
  8. I have a new GPSMAP 76CSx scheduled to arrive later this week and it comes with a 128-mb card. Now that MicroSd cards are available for up to 1 GB, I am considering a larger extra card. Is anybody here using a 1 GB card? Does it make the GPSr run more slowly because of the larger memory size? How much area can realistically be covered with 512 MB or 1 GB (my plan is to cover the entire east coast with one card, if possible)? Thanks in advance for the help.
  9. What has not been adequately considered here is the concept of courtesy. This has nothing to do with closed doors, open doors, back doors, protecting those presumed to be unaware of what a "fair" price is, etc. I neglected to mention (because I thought it would go without saying, but ultimately did not) in my previous post that I would never approach two people making a face-to-face deal on something (i.e., hamfest flea market, car showroom, etc.) and offer my feelings. The deal between those people is strictly between them and they do not need me to ride in on a white horse to rescuse somebody from spending money. The free market works and people make the deals they want to make. If I chose to offer for sale a used item for twice its new retail price, that is certainly my choice. Part of that choice is realizing that nobody would pay such a high price, but (again) that is the choice I may either alter or live with. An example of this is when my wife and I bought two Jeeps from a dealer who offered us a really good deal. I am certain there are those who would say they got a better deal on their Jeeps, but that does not interest me..... what I care about is my deal. The same goes for when we bought a house last year. Sure, there were cheaper houses out there, but those were not what we chose to buy - we made a decision and bought based upon our needs and desires within a budget, and are happy with that decision. Had somebody come along and attempted to interfere with the process on the Jeep or house deals, I would say they were rude, just as would be somebody who interrupts a conversation to draw attention to themselves. I would certainly not be grateful for their attempt at 'rescuing' me from my own lesser intellect. Many internet forums do not allow posts which publicly criticize a seller's asking price, mostly because to allow such behavior often (unfortunately) invites trolling, and that is something this forum does not need. I doubt that members of the Internet Rescue Squad would pull such a stunt in person.
  10. Many hamfest flyers display GPS coordinates, but that is a rather limited market. They probably do that because many hams sre buying GPS units, just as many GPS peepz are getting into ham radio. A lot of in-dash GPS systems will list coordinates, but will not provide location searches based on the lat/long coordinates; they only search for addresses and names of places. Must be their manufacturers think the average person does not care about such details as lat/long stuff......
  11. I favor using PM's to discuss a sale or to make offers, etc..... keeps things more courteous and less likely to be construed as "flaming" another member of the forum. Any time I engage in the discussion of a sale (as a potential buyer or as a seller), I go straight for the PM button. If a seller's price for a listed item is too high, people will probably not buy it (unless they want to pay that price). Every potential seller has a choice regarding what price to assign an item for sale.
  12. Check your PM's (Private Messages)....... UPDATE: E-mail sent.
  13. I just ordered a 76CSx and will probably order a larger memory card for it after I receive the GPSr and become accustomed to it. Going from an eTrex Vista which worked very well for me (see the Garage Sale subforum), I will have to get used to the different placment of buttons. The ability to float will probably never get tested while I own the 76CSx, unless I decide to enter the Ted Kennedy Drive-Alike Contest ("..... and when ah returrrrnnnned, Mary Jo and the GPS were gonnnnnnnne.......") , but the other features will be great. The 60 and 76 series have similar displays, so the rest of the decision is up to personal preference.
  14. PM sent geochaching4life, No reply (yet) from above........ did you receive my PM?
  15. Garmin eTrex Vista with map software, PC cable, PC/DC cable, lanyard, "bean bag" mount, and case. All are in excellent condition. $125.00, includes UPS shipping (48 states).
  16. The good news: Palm Zire 72 The bad news: Windoze
  17. I have been using one of those for a few years as well, and it has been a great GPS unit all the way; have not tried the quick-charge Energizersm but the regular NiMH 2300's work a long time. The vista replaced an ICOM GP-2, and may be upgraded to something with a color display later this year, but I am not sure if the color display will be as good in bright sunlight as the (greyscale) Vista. It is tempting to keep the Vista as well as get a new 60 or 76 CSx.
  18. I have been using a Vista for a few years and have found it to bean excellent GPS unit. While the newer ones are more advanced, I am still on the fence about "upgrading" to a 60 CSx or similar unit. When I bought the Vista, I planned on using it for hiking, motorcycling, and in the Jeep, and got all the accessories I needed to accomplish that; now that the 2005 Jeep has a built-in Nav system, I mostly use the Vista while on foot or in a rental car. When on the bicycle or M/C, I wear it on my belt and stop every so often to check the map. By the way, except for the routing, the Vista beats the Jeep's built-in system. Under light-moderate cover, it works quite well; in the wide open areas, it is exceptional.
  19. DeLorme's SA-HH is a decent program for basic mapping on a PDA, but it is cumbersome to use for geocaching and hiking with a GPS connected to it. A standalone hand held GPSr is a better way to go, especially something like the 60CS or similar. I use SA-HH on my Z72 for simple reference, but even my good ol' reliable eTrex Vista (with its grayscale display) is better when out ther moving around.
  20. I was stung by a bunch of wasps in my yard a few years ago, and am not allergic to them, but still did 50 mg of Benadryl and a gram of Tylenol immediately afterward..... almost no sign of the stings within a few hours. Check with your physician before taking either of these OTC meds. Very few people are allergic/sensitive to either or both, but be careful anyway. The Tylenol will relive most of the pain, and the Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) will alleviate the itching and redness from the stings.
  21. I cannot justify using a PDA as a GPSr for the reasons stated above..... If my Z72 gets dropped with the protective case opened and face down, it is probably toast. The old reliable Vista can take the same sort of drop and will stand at least a chance of survival. So far, both are the best I have found for their respective purposes. Not planning on trading up anytime soon.
  22. I did that (geomowing?) once when I first got my eTrex Vista...... it showed some fairly accurate paths for the ol' Dixon ZTR, and it also showed this one path to a point across the streetand back.... everybody asked why I went across the street (was I visiting the neighbor?). Many cars have speedometers that read a bit high because they come equipped with a "standard" sized tire. The optional sized tire is often slightly larger and the speedometer is then corrected. Several years ago, my 1998 Jeep GC had 225/75-15's as OEM tires; when I upgraded to 235/75-15's, the speedometer was dead on. My current Jeep speedometer is quite accurate, but my motorcycle speedometer reads 3-4% high . By the way, I have used the GPS for locating a Landing Zone on Rescue/EMS calls - works like a charm every time.
  23. I have been considering it, and maybe the HH version as well. I would like to see (in the HH version) the ability to load maps directly to the SD card, rather than loading them into the main memory and then moving them to the card. My Zire 72 RAM is usually near full because I also use it for work applications, so this feature would be (as Martha says) a good thing.
  24. Money Order is best; PayPal is second choice (because you lose a bit of $ in the process unless you adjust the price to cover it). Keep all correspondence related to the transaction for a few months after the deal is done; this includes e-mail messages. I just sold a tri-band Amateur Radio transceiver to a guy who sent a money order, and I shipped the radio the day the MO was received here. A bunch of other people inquired about the radio, asking that if the first buyer backed out they be notified so they could then buy it. I kept all of those e-mails in a separate folder in my e-mail program, partly because I have another radio like the one I sold, and may decide to sell that one as well. Back to the GPS sale, I agree that you should not ship until you have the MO in hand. It used to be that you could trust just about anybody for almost any amount of money within reason, but that (unfortunately) is no longer the case.
