  1. Spending a relatively short time investigating this, I found that the Garmin nuvi 350 does everything except allow you to link images to waypoints. However, this is not a terribly bad thing because it does have an image viewer. With a free paperless printer, you can grab all the waypoints you want and put them into image form from GSAK without a problem. I have used my PSP for that. It doesn't have the capability to manage caches either. But, the nuvi 350 has an mp3 player. *shrug*
  2. Is it typical for one's first nightcache to be in a cemetary? It was neat and creepy and fun! All for a micro too! I shouldn't complain. Honestly it is a nice cemetary, full of antebellum tombstones and whatnot.
  3. It doesn't happen often but occasionally you'll find geocachers in movies and on TV! Post your examples here! "It's a geocache, Jim, but not as we know it..."
  4. If you have problems with my way, try file:///c:/cache... etc. That is the way it SHOULD have worked.
  5. Well, looks like I sorta figured this out: It seemed to work when I entered "\\\C:\Cache\%code.htm" in the URL Link portion of the Streets and Trips Export Wizard in GSAK. I can't ctrl-click but I sure can open the balloon and click on the url! (After setting the pushpin properties to display the url in the balloon of course.) Weird, but hey, it works now.
  6. Ok, I like using my laptop when caching, sure, but I can't really take it with me "into the field." It has to remain in my car. So I was thinking, I would love a handheld device that could do these things for me: 1) Allow for cache management (with the use of pcoket queries and the such.) 2) Show my current position on some kind of mapping software. 3) Allow said mapping software to have the waypoints for caches visually showing on it, with the ability to click on those waypoints and get the cache information 4) Give me turn by turn driving instructions, with street names, preferrably with an English or Austrailian accent. (Ok, I really don't care about the accent, but who isn't calmed by an English accent.) My laptop does most of this (excluding street names, and an English accent) but it's just far too bulky to carry around out in the field. Does anyone have any relatively cheap solutions for this? I mean, sure, I could get a high end car type gps with the capability of doing most of this, but I just simply don't have the money for that. Thanks in advance! Wumpus
  7. Actually, for simple caches where I'm not gonna get myself in too much trouble, I use GSAK and pocket queries. Then I paperlessly print the HTML output for the caches I'm going after onto my PSP. It works, but honestly it's not very smart! *grin*
  8. I use the non color version of this, and it seems to work fine. It's only slightly less accurate in the woods than the Yellow Etrex, but it does have map capabilities! Also, the quick stick is nice. Anyhoo, I like mine, personally. Mind you, I got mine on ebay for $20 cheaper. You might want to give that a try. And don't forget to get a computer connection cable! It's a breeze to enter waypoints with that! Good luck!
  9. Ok, this is a weird one. I use GSAK to import my html pages for my geocaches then of course the way points. When I export the HTML pages, I use the default settings. When I export my waypoints, I use the Streets and Trips menu and change the URL link to the xref.txt located where I put my HTML pages. When I go into Streets and Trips, I import (using the Import Data Wizard) my waypoints. I then change the pushpin properties to display the URL in the bubble. My problem is this: it will not open the local url (file://c:/etc...) at all. Won't even pop up IE. I have one other bit of info that hopefully will help someone help me figure this out: When I export the waypoints, but use the default settings (where the URLs point straight to the official webpage) then do everything else the same, it works. I can Ctrl-Click on the pushpin or open it and simply click on the URL in the bubble. I'm stumped here. Anyone have any ideas? I use IE7 (though I did recently go back to IE6 on my laptop with the same problem) and I use Streets and Trips 2007. Also, I have checked the pushpin properties and set the "Use Hyperlinks from your imported data" to URL. One other bit of information: when manually creating a pushpin, I can type in any webpage I want and it'll work, but it won't work if I type anything with the file:// format, except for "file://" itself (and nothing else) which will take me straight to the "My computer" window, as it's suppose to. Thanks in advance!
  10. Kitfox, you hit upon EXACTLY what my plan was for this laptop setup. As for when I'm driving, I only use it when I have a navigator. Then the navigator can say, "Cache coming up." and switch the route to the cache. Now, mind you, I use this mainly just to know where a cache is and the quickest way to get to someplace to park. After that I rely on the information stored in GSAK and of course my GPSr waypoints.
  11. Interesting. Do you need any of the mapsource maps in order to use it? Also, can you do something like a "find nearest geocache?" I saw that it has a pretty robust "find" system and was curious about that. What a hoot if that worked! *grin*
  12. Ok, not sure this is in the right spot, but bear with me. I was playing with the idea of using my laptop to facilitate caching and came up with a 3 step idea without spending any money on additional hardware. Mostly my ideas have worked out, but I have a couple of GSAK automatioin questions. I started with my laptop, my GPSr, and a serial connection cable. The only additional cost was for the basic version of Streets and Trips 2007. Step 1) Find a way to use my laptop and Etrex Legend for realtime voice directions along a route. This obviously was the easiest step and it comes in handy just in general for travelling. I just didn't want to spend any additional money on hardware when I thought it was possible to do this. A little tweaking on my GPSr and Streets and Trips and this was a breeze. Step 2) Importing GSAK waypoints to Streets and Trips. Well, this was built in to GSAK, so that worked fine. This is where my question comes in: Step 3) I would like to know if there is some way to automate GSAK to Center on GPSr every X number of seconds so that whoever my navigator is can tell how close we are to caches immediately. Also whether one can automate it to download from email any GPX pocket queries basically just to daily or weekly update GSAK's database. (Honestly, I can do this by hand, but if I could automate it, it would be cool.) Anyway, that was confusing, so I'll just let y'all let me know. Thanks! Team Wumpus
  13. I'm a newbie, sure, but darn it if I don't like the Sudoku based cache puzzles.
