  1. Very cool. I look forward to your updates and future iPhone apps.
  2. I'm hiking part of the AT down in Central Virginia next week for about 3-4 days and need some advice on what to take. I've got a Kelty Coyote 4900 backpack, some good hiking boots, an old 2-man tent, Vista HCx, compass, water bladder (fits in the backpack). I'm hiking with 2 other people who are bringing water treatment supplies, paper TOPO maps, and a stove. I still need to get a mummy sleeping bag, would one from Dick's Sporting Goods suffice? Also, what kind of clothing (specifically pants) would be appropriate?
  3. I wouldn't get either of these units since they will NOT float. Go for the Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx. It will float and can store maps on a microSD card.
  4. Does anybody have any higher resolution photos specifically of the 4 contacts? I got a used 500LE broken (the 4 metal contacts are nowhere to be found) and am trying to figure out if it can be fixed. It CAN be powered via external USB. Also, does anyone know where those 4 contacts connect to on the main circuit board?
  5. Hi, I have a Magellan Explorist 500LE but it won't power on and it looks like the battery contacts to the PCB board have come off. Could someone take a photo (or refer me to a link) of what the battery contacts should like like? It's right below the SD card slot. Thanks!
  6. I tried the PDA and bluetooth receiver out in the woods yesterday and could barely maintain 3 satellites under the heavy tree canopy. And since I'm going to be mapping trails I'd like to have the best accuracy possible. I just figured that there would be some external antenna that uses more power and has better reception than the internal antennas in the PDA or small bluetooth receivers. So correct me if I'm wrong, but are you saying that (for SiRF III chipsets) there are no external antennas that would amplify the GPS signals more than the integrated antennas?
  7. Actually I found out that we also have the option of using Pharos GPS 525 PDAs with built-in GPS. The built-in GPS uses the latest SiRF III chipset. And this PDA even has an MCX connector! Would I get better reception with a Gilsson external antenna with this SiRF III GPS receiver?
  8. Hi, I've been geocaching for a while now but now I need to use GPS for a more accurate project. I'm taking a GPS class this summer and our final project is to map the trails of a local forest. We are using ArcPad on PDAs and using Teletype Bluetooth GPS receivers. I'm concerned that under all the moderate/heavy tree canopy I'm going to have a difficult time getting good signals. I have the option of using two different Teletype GPS receivers: Teletype 1958 http://reviews.cnet.com/gps-kits/teletype-...54.html?tag=sub This is the earlier model. It has 12-channel capability, uses the SiRF Star IIe/LP shipset, and has an MCX port for external antennas. Teletype 2581 http://www.teletype.com/Merchant2/merchant...gory_Code=13000 This is the latest model. It has 20-channel capability and uses the SiRF Star III chipset. But it DOES NOT have an external antenna port. Which receiver would work best? The older 1958 with an external antenna or the newer 2581 w/out an external antenna? Any suggestions for an antenna for the 1958 model?
