  1. Members Only caches, Pocket Queries and MyPop features in the forums. You also got to change you avatars name to something besides "Geocacher". Listed here... http://www.geocaching.com/subscribe/
  2. quote:Hmm.. How about a buck knife, some .38 rounds and a copy of the Anarchist's Cookbook? HA! That's the funniest thing I've seen all day.
  3. I usually trade what I've taken from other caches. But in the absence of other items, I toss in a few army men. Goes with my nym. As far as it being junk, that's sort of subjective but I think in the big scheme of things it really OUGHT to be "junk". But... there is a difference between "crappy junk" and "cool junk". I like Mardi-gras type beads and army men. Cool to me, but still junk. To sum up, I think you should shoot for "cool junk".
  4. quote:Originally posted by iresqu1:OK, guy thanks for the info on the Spinner program. Last time I ask a question w/o investigating all the possibilities first. Didn't mean to start a war of words here. Later <heh heh> Not your fault. Don't let me scare you off. Gotta maintain your sense of humor where forums and news groups are concerned.
  5. Don't have a Magellan, but I'd take that deal. It's a good one as far as I'm concerned. If you don't want that one I'd recommend an eTrex Legend or Vista.
  6. It will if you have a map of the region you're visiting loaded. There may be some details in the base map too. Just go to the map page and pan to Australia. What you see on that page is the same as what you'll get when you're there.
  7. I suppose it could effect the electonics of the unit if the noise were loud enough (due to the vibration). But that's not exactly GPSr specific. I don't think noise would effect a GPSr any differently than any other electronic device. Can you reproduce this problem consistantly? What type of unit? Where'd you see that comment?
  8. You need decimal degrees. You should go into Setup/Units on the Legend and change the coord display to... hddd mm.mmm Right now it's set to... hddd mm ss.s
  9. This is pretty funny. http://www.homestarrunner.com/ Takes awhile to get into it, but it's funny. Be sure to check out "Lookin' at a Thing in a Bag".
  10. Sorry. I think you may have taken me out of context. Your definition of "BS": Not factual or not realistic My definition of "BS": Ought not to be that way Your definition of "sort of": End result was not as I wish My definition of "sort of": Had to take the longer way around to the desired result All can of course be right, but I was operating under my defs on this one. And yes. I actually have nothing better to do than defend myself here. It's WAY to hot out (100+). Normally there's no point.
  11. Just online pretty much. There might also be requirement from the cache maintainer. Be sure to fulfill those requirements first.
  12. Oh man. You are ON me today. I'd say something like "You obviously don't support this crap so don't know", but I think I'd be wrong because I know who you are and I think you DO know. That alone confuses me to no end. I'm speechless. I'm a troll, eh? <heh heh> Maybe this time I was. I'll be constructive... To the original poster: My apologies for being critical for your choice in browsers. However, I still feel Netscape is a poor choice. As such I don't use it and cannot help you other than to say that you will have many fewer problems if you choose another browser. IE would be the easiest choice. Of the three big ones, Opera would probably be the overall best. I've been taken way to seriously lately so I feel compelled to remind you that these are opinions only. As ClayJar points out, if you are a developer or not using an MS operating system then possibly Netscape is your only choice. However if ClayJar's examples do not apply to you then I fully recommend another browser. ANY other browser. You will will have fewer problems in the long run.
  13. quote:There's no need to be rude about it, GB. Having been close to many discussions with rangers and land management authorities, I would quite certainly agree with Jeremy's decision to retain the "GC" prefix as long as possible, since that is what the powers external to geocaching have been conditioned to recognize. I tend to agree that it is a good idea to not add unnecessary complications to their lives, since they have been conditioned to ask for the "GC number" and (in some cases) are finally starting to warm up to geocaching. (I know the waypoint designation is a really, really basic thing, but if it makes the lives easier for those who can cause us great pain, then great for them.) Eeek. I certainly didn't mean to be rude. I tend to cut to the chase. As such I'm often rather raw. My bad. Your statement about "conditioned to ask" is BS to me. Factoring down to the lowest common denominator has always been a HUGE pet-peeve of mine. <ahem> Topic for another time. But I digress. I certainly agree that handling these guys with kiddie gloves is in our best interest. quote:As for your implication that changing the prefix to V, M, et cetera would somehow make things more practical, I'm afraid I must disagree... strongly. Perhaps *for you* it would make things easier, but for me it would make life a pain in the receiver. My icons, descriptions, and PDAs yield *more* than enough information, and having all the waypoints in my receivers in order of GCID makes my life much simpler. Additionally, since I use my GPS receivers for more than just geocaching, it makes it much more convenient to find my other waypoints, since the large collection of GCIDs are all in one place and can be bypassed by logical scrolling. Ah yes. In order. I don't agree at all for several good reasons. But again I digress. I can see your point. From reading around it seems to be a split issue. You feel your way, I feel mine. You get your way, I sort of get mine. No biggie. That's how it goes sometimes. quote:Put simply, I do not disagree that *for you* a variable prefix may make things one step simpler, but please refrain from making poorly-formed generalities out of your personal opinions. Ooof. Whoa there cowboy. Poorly-formed or not, as with any opinion my generalities are subjective. You shouldn't get your feathers ruffled over something so trivial. As for the future of said opinions, I'll continue making them. I'll work on the "form", but don't get your hopes up.
  14. It's been beaten to death here over and over. Do a search and you'll see. Your suggestion won't cut it. That'll narrow the number of available caches which has already run out once. I've always liked the idea of getting rid of the G in GCxxxx and making it a V or M or whatever. But, near as I can tell TPTB would rather keep their branding than make it practical. Doesn't matter anyway. Use the method CR suggests. If you have the necessary skills you can do as I did and write a script the snags the GPX file from your email app and spins it automatically. I never have to touch 'em manually. But... if you're not a member you gotta do it their way.
  15. Be sure to check the Datum. Should be WGS84.
  16. I think maybe we're overlooking the obvious problem... Opera stomps that browser. Even IE owns it. Why won't Netscape just die quietly?
  17. quote:Or start a whole new thread about caching in sitcoms. Done.
  18. Jolly B Good said: quote:I think it helps to remember that there ARE folks like the characters from Seinfeld living out there in the real world. (I'm thinking of Karmer and George in particular). Can you imagine them caching together? The Common Sense rule would definitely break down here. I can see Kramer using a 55 gallon oil drum as a Cache Container. "Best cache EVER, Jerry!!!" And George would take five items from a cache and leave a Mint he took from the Restaurant they hang out at. Darn. Too bad the show is off the air. That might make a good episode. Then Captain Chaoss said: quote:Your right, it would make a most excellent episode. Then, Elaine and Putty are "making out" by the cache, and keep getting interrupted by cachers. Ok people, continue with the episode here ! Or start a whole new thread about caching in sitcoms. And so here it is. Sounded fun.
  19. I tend to trust the common sense of other individuals. It's the common sense of a group that I do not trust. A person is smart, people are stupid.
  20. I hear Lowrance units are very underrated. I've been itching to give one a test run.
  21. Olympus I think this is as close as you'll get. Fuji makes a similar one.
  22. RE: Filling I pull the bladder out with the tube still connected and in the pack. It's long enough so the pack can sit on the counter while I fill the bladder with ice and water. I see no reason why you couldn't put it in the refrigerator. In fact Camelbaks site mentions that (last question in that section). SIDE NOTE: There a cool demonstration showing how tough the bladder is. RE: Cleaning While I'm not recommending you leave it full for months at a time, IMO it's really not necessary to clean it every week when you're using it regularly. Only if you're going to store it for a long period of time should you break it down clean it, and dry it. Even when used regularly a cleaning every 4 or 5 months can't hurt. I clean mine a few times a year and have never had bad tasting water. Every weekend before heading out I simply open it, rinse it out with clean water (tube too), and refill it with ice and water.
  23. I have both a Vista and a Legend. I prefer the Legend.
