  1. Well I never thought it would happen in Kelowna, BC, but we had our first geocache related bomb scare today. GC13809 "It's All About the Trade" www.castanet.net article My friend Ryan (nickelgames) was the person that was seen putting the cache back. Apparently someone saw him and thought it was drug related. They got his license plate number and the RCMP was waiting for him at home. Poor guy! But it's all good, the RCMP know what it is now.
  2. Green box - Traditional Cache 2 Orange boxes - Multi step cache ? - Mystery/Puzzle cache Earth - Earthcache (you have to answer some questions, no log book) Ghost - Virtual cache (go to spot, take a picture, no log book) Envelope - Letterbox (go to letterboxing.org to find out more) Talking bubble - Event Camera - Webcam cache (usually requires you and someone on a computer) Green/Blue circle - CITO (Cache In Trash Out) event Talking Bibble with M - Mega Event
  3. It's best to name the POI just so you're not trying to remember which one it is. Doesn't have to be a long name, but one that will trigger your memory when you look for it. I use initials if it's part of a multi. Example Kelowna Twin has 3 stages so I did KT2, KT3 (because the original coordinates were on the cache page). Works for some people. Nothing worse than getting into an area like Vernon, BC which has a lot of multi caches in a small area and you don't know what POI belongs to what cache. Yeah best to name the POI
  4. That's great! I've seen so many caches where you think, what was the hider thinking when they placed the cache here! The only cache that's on tracks in our area (the Okanagan in BC) that's ok is on the old Kettle Valley Railway. The train does go out onto the old trestle, but the cache is behind a barrier at the end of the tracks where they used to go. Tracks into Penticton have long since been removed. This section is a tourist attraction.
  5. Yeah I am entering it all by hand (copy/paste mostly). I can be a lot of work, but the two of us find it's useful when we take the laptop with us. Then we don't have to remember what order we're doing the caches in when we do a 20+ caching day.
  6. I use Excel to set up my caching days. I have a column for: Cache Name Type of cache Size Difficulty Terrain Coordinate (cause we've gone out on a long run and the coordinates were NOT in our GPS like we thought!) Parking Coordinates Hints and Additional Info We do have a PDA, but sometimes it's easier to see it on paper. It may not be the best way for everyone, but I find it easier to have 4 pieces of paper loaded with 100 caches (like we have for our Alaska trip) instead of 100 cache pages. You don't always need the entire cache page unless it's a mystery or multi cache. Those I'll print if we're not going to be using the Laptop in the car. Saves paper too! Sorry about the poor quality of the picture!
  7. Yep, I'm getting that too. I ended up having to open the KML file for Google Earth, but even that's not working right.
  8. I'm getting that too, plus when i go to the map view it says "Loading Maps"
  9. I went to go print one of the google map views so I know where caches are and the cache icons come up as blank white squares. I find having the map is useful when I'm in an area that I'm not familiar with.
  10. The most useful tool I've ever used caching is a compact mirror used for looking under benches, around corners and inside tops of things that you can't reach.
  11. I usually carry a bunch of cache logs in the small craft bags with a log sheet and a cache note in case the log is so soaked or full that I can't sign it. Then I notify the log owner. The log sheet is only large enough for another 10-15 people to sign it so they usually have to replace it soon enough, but gives them some time to get there if they can't do it right away. I appreciate when people do it for my caches so I do it for other people.
  12. I finally used some epoxy and cemented a pill bottle to the bottom of it. Dang wish I'd read the one with the styrofoam before. another cache maybe? hehe
  13. I actually have permission. I meant that I wanted to get this cache done quickly
  14. LOL you know I just thought of that, but nope it doesn't attract. Must be aluminum
  15. Hi all, I wanted to place a cache under the top of a fence cap (yeah I know not original, but that's all there is). I'm at a loss, what do you use to actually stick it on there? I've tried glue gun and it just breaks off. Is there some kind of epoxy I should be using? Something I could find at say Rona or Home Depot? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I took the fence cap and I wanted to put it back quickly.
  16. I just activated a few new TBs with quotation marks in the names. I found the following behavior: If I activate a TB with quotation marks, it HTML encodes the "" marks as " and displays &quot on the site as text. If I edit the TB name on the edit page and use quotation marks, it appears as "" marks on the site (not as quot;) I believe the issue is just a difference in the encoding scheme between the two pages. Edit: Accidently logged in as anakerose. Report is from LordEd.
  17. Hmm. I can see it...that would be some FTF trip!! Do you mind if I used that for a cache around here? (British Columbia, Canada)????
  18. We usually try and break our 'most number of caches found in a day/weekend' record (which is 27 in a day and 40 in a weekend) when we go on multiple cache runs. Right now our goal is to get a cache in one of each of the cities we stop at on our cruise to Alaska. Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Victoria, Seattle and some along the way from Kelowna, BC
  19. Depends on the time of year. I usually wear at least a ball cap when we go and sometimes a bucket hat if it's really hot out. Winter I always wear a toque.
  20. LordEd and I have a laptop that we take with us and we just use notepad to document each cache as a find, not found, and some details so we don't forget what we did. Makes it easier to go back on what you did and log. That and we nearly always stay at hotels/motels that have wireless internet so we can log at the end of each day. Being from southern British Columbia there are not many areas where the cache concentration is high so our weekend record is only 40. We're planning a caching trip next year up from Kelowna, BC to Edmonton, AB down to Calgary and back home. Should get a few hundred caches if we're lucky.
