Are GPS's more accurate than phones?
lee737 replied to majordude's topic in General geocaching topics
That's all I do.... 'We found the cache 10m south of indicated GZ', or 'we found it at S234 E872'. I've only been there once, my device may be the problem..... For puzzles/multis I'll give an offset ie S -0.012 E+0.008 whatever..... then other users can use it if they want, the CO can take it on board if they decide to tweak coords <insert laughter track here>..... If I give a coord it will be a decently averaged GPS coord, checked against our phones also, if they are discordant I won't make any coord comments..... We found one around 25m out this week, I think the CO didn't know how to extrapolate coords to show a cache under a bridge..... -
Difficulty / Terrain rating changes - What would you do?

Some people would say that about this sport/hobby in general..... -

Same here (holds head down) - and we've come off second best several times as a result! -

You would think.... but I would put a guess out there that for the average trad, hints are read at a rate maybe 5-10x that of descriptions.... -

Don't worry - we've done that! -

I put important info I want them to see in the hint - like - 'the inner may fall out when you unscrew the bottom' - this is important 10m up a tree.... -

We always use a GPS to measure coordinates for a hide, and mostly search using a GPSr too (Garmin Montana), we also use phones to search at times - I don't believe there is really a significant difference in the accuracy between them. I prefer a GPS to search, as it more efficient - it is always navigating, never needs screen unlocking etc... and is better for battery life, accuracy searching - no real difference I've noted.... -
Magnets that are strong for mint tins
lee737 replied to eriicamurphy's topic in General geocaching topics
I don't place mint tins - but other magnetic caches I've hidden will be similar.... you'll need a couple of rare earth magnets - probably 25mm diameter, 4mm thick - they'll do it nicely. -

It was, now it is supported by HQ, with congratulations and all on your stats page, with a link to help you to fill it in again.... My personal thoughts (from a DT seeker) - once your cache has a 4 or more in it (maybe even a 3.5 as above!), fiddling with the DT ratings, especially decreasing, has a good chance of upsetting people. -
I don't think you can. Over the years I've moved them into 'the back' by renaming them 'ZZ trackable name' to push them to the bottom of the list (once they are definitely lost), or adopting them to an unused account....

That sounds awesome....

Adventure Labs on geocaching website for Desktop
lee737 replied to S110's topic in Playing Adventures
I think I over-gorged on ALs back in April, and have hardly touched them since - must have given me a tummy ache! I tend to ignore them now, unless there is a bonus cache involved and the AL is in an interesting spot, or we've run out of other caches to find! -
We've definitely morphed from primarily find count to other priorities.... DT average, DT grid squares and Jasmer. So our aim is to improve on these, in our finds and hides. After completing a couple of caches requiring abseiling, we're keen to do some more of them.... We don't ignore low DT caches, but we now tend to prioritise them below others...
-
I'd vote for this one..... attaching images to our personal notes... I can think of heaps of use for this.
-
This is how we end up with hundreds of dull, all very similar ALs everywhere....

How do I get text messages when a cache gets published?

All emails from HQ go to my main address… I tweak the settings of this account to forward new cache notifications to my mobile email… -
How do I get text messages when a cache gets published?
lee737 replied to retired13's topic in How do I...?
I set up a new email account that is pushed through to my phone. In my main email new cache reports are diverted to that account... So I get a text-like notification on publication of new caches. -
Puzzle cache with no way to get coords
lee737 replied to azgoldseekers's topic in General geocaching topics
+1 There seems to be a lot like this now.... there is an awful lot on oneupmanship going on here.... who can create the hardest puzzle.... -
We wish! It certainly can be dry, but we have plenty of wet/dirty spots too, and plenty of finders who can't close containers properly, and plenty of hiders who can't choose good containers....

As a CO.... if I saw a TD log from a reviewer on one of our caches, it would make me get off my tush, pull my finger out, whatever - and either sort that cache out, post *something* about what I was going to do, or archive it myself. I'm yet to see a cache forcibly archived out from under a CO begging for it to be spared as there was some reason why they couldn't/shouldn't fix it. If you want your cache to survive troubled times, speak up - say something.... anything....

How do I stop wasting time trying to find coordinates?
lee737 replied to M6EQR's topic in How do I...?
Exactly - just learn how to do it, it's faster than trying to get a website to look it up..... The way I taught my son, or at least got him to see the concept - the minutes is just a fraction of a full degree, the same as they are the fraction of an hour. Half and hour (0.5) is 30 minutes. 3/4 hr (0.75) is 45 minutes. So we only need to take into account the decimal part - multiplying it by 60 gives you the number of minutes, in decimal form - ie MM.MMM. Then of course if you wanted seconds, you repeat the same process with the .MMM portion you just got, but we generally don't need to do that part.... -

I agree.... I think the age of the cam came and went years ago.... Now - how many AL logs are just as bogus?
