  1. Moose_Mob,

I first started out asking if I could have a "one time find" type of cache where the finder gets a great FTF price and the original container for their efforts after a long hike.

But after great posts from geocacher's, I know now that I cannot hide a temp. cache. So now i'm going to hide a cache where the finder must hike 3-5kms, can find a very interesting container with a great FTF price as well as ready to go cache container. So the original cache can stay for others to find. I just figure if i'm going to make people hike that far i want it worth their efforts.

  2. Ok, so I will do a deep in the woods (3-5Km) hike where the cache container remains but will have a great FTF prize.

I'm in the area of where i want to hide the cache quite often, so maintenance would not be a problem at all.

    Thanks for the replies.

  3. That wouldn't be listed here:

When you report a cache on the Geocaching.com web site, geocachers should (and will) expect the cache to be there for a realistic and extended period of time. Therefore, caches that have the goal to move ("traveling caches"), or temporary caches (caches hidden for less than 3 months or for events) most likely will not be published. If you wish to hide caches for an event, bring printouts to the event and hand them out there.

We realize that it is possible that a planned long-term cache occasionally becomes finite because of concerns with the environment, missing or plundered caches, or the owner’s decision to remove the cache for other valid reasons. Please do your best to research fully, hide wisely, and maintain properly for a long cache life.

I'm not sure what the reason would be to do it anyway. A valuable FTF prize, fine, but why archive the cache?

I could keep the cache there and just have a good FTF prize, but I'm pretty sure that not a whole lot of people unless they were die hards would be the only ones to go looking.

  4. I had a idea the other day about hiding a few geocaches in my area. I was wondering if I could hide a "one time find" geocache. The idea is that i would put it way back out of the way of any road or trail (3-5kms), hide it in a container that the finder can take and use as his/her own. I was thinking too that the bonus for the hardcore lucky finder would be a dinner for two, a gift certificate, or just cash..something around a $50 value maybe more. After the FTF and the geocacher takes the cache and the prize it would then be archieved.

So has anybody ever done this or come across a geocache of this type?

Thanks in advance for the responses and happy hunting.

  5. Press the "my account" on the left hand side of the main page. From there look under "search options" and it says towards the bottom of that box "update home coordinates".

    Good luck and happy hunting.

  6. Myself, I created a spreadsheet using excel. I created a seperate page for specific areas of the city, highways, and parks in my province. It has 5 columns on each page. It lists the Waypoint number, the cache name, the type of container, date found and general comments. Things like the hints, terrain, etc..are in my gps unit. I update the spreadsheet once a week when the newsletter comes in my e-mail account. So when I go out and find a cache and sign the log, I also dig out my printed spreadsheet and date the find and write any comments of the cache or location.

But before I go on the hunt for x amount of caches, i take a few minutes and view the cache pages just to review any recent comments and to make sure they are still active.

  8. I have the Explorist 500NA and I have similar problems with the "FOUND" caches. Mine doesn't unmark them when i turn the unit on/off, i find that mine sometimes unmarks them when i do a update on the .gs file, but there are other times when I can update the .gs file a few times over and they remain marked as found. I too will be interested to hear if someone knows what the problem is.

  9. Thanks, if needed I may alter your letter a bit to fit my current situation.

I think maybe I was having a flashback from some other site or something...lol

The Department of Natural Resources here in NB Canada said that the land where I want to hide the caches is open to the public for use, but it's a game reserve so no hunting is permitted. So i'm just waiting to here back from forestry department taking care of the reserve to make sure it's ok for geocaching. If so, there are hundreds of square kilometers with endless amounts of roads and hiding places.

  10. hey fellow geocachers. I'm looking to hide my first few caches this coming weekend and I've been searching geocaching.com for the land owner permission form. I remember seeing this form quite some time ago and I was wondering if anybody could help direct me to where I can find it on the site now.

  11. nope, when you open the file in google earth, all the geocaches around the world will show up. If you want to see the cache page of a certain geocache then just click on the cache icon. It helps if you login to your account first and click "remember me on this pc". That way when you open the cache page of a geocache you don't have to relogin everytime.

  12. Under "my account" on the geocaching.com website, look on the right hand side of the page and you will see "download geocache browser in google earth". If you save this file to your own pc it will NOT update automatically. For new caches you have to reopen the file periodically.

  13. I might be one of the lucky ones, but i've owned two Magellans so far and haven't had a problem with either. My first unit was the Explorist 300 which I used more for hunting and fishing than anything else. I enjoyed having a gps so much when in the woods rather than a compass that I sold it and bought the Explorist 500NA. I got into geocaching with this unit, downloaded topo canada and topo usa maps and uploaded the my most frequently visited provinces/states into it. This unit goes everywhere with me and beleive me it takes a beating and lots of use. I do notice lately that the joystick is a bit slower when moving to the right, but it's not often I need to use the joystick anyway.

Reading these forum posts about the new magellan line is scaring me. If the Tritons are as bad as people claim they are then I will switch to Garmin. But my switch over to Garmin will not be because of bad experiences with Magellan.

    Happy Caching everybody.

  14. I'm with WestbrooksByTheSea. I've owned 2 magellans, the 300 and now the 500. I've had no problems with freezing or buttons not working. I use mine quite a lot for geocaching, fishing, drives and it has never failed me. BUT, with the geocaching it is a bit of a process to get the geocaches you want, and as for magellan customer support I just gave up in contacting them for anything. There is more information on these forums from users than any technical support person could or would ever tell you.

  15. After you highlight all the geocaches on that page, save the file as "page 1.loc" then go to the next page of geocaches and do the same. keep doing this till you get as many as you want. Open up the geocaching manager software that came with your Explorist 500. Open and load each of the ".loc" files you saved. You must check "append to list" in order to load multiple .loc files. Once completed save ".gs" file to whatever name you want and upload to gps. That's what i did and it worked fine for me.

    Hope this helps, happy caching.
