  1. I am on my sixth unit since 1998. My first was an aviation unit. I can't believe I have forgot what model it was !! Now using a Lowrance H2O but planning on upgrading to color soon. I will stick with Lowrance since I own the software and love Lowrance.
  2. So what kind of file size, on average, per cache are you looking at with this method? I'd imagine it's quite a bit larger the text PDB file for cachemate. Just curious. You are correct. It runs about 22mb for 2500 caches. Not too much of a problem since the TX has 128mb of memory and I have a 1gb card, but it would be huge for older Palms.
  3. I'll take 4 when they become available, Crake !
  4. It is hard to beat for the price. I think it is the cheapest map unit around. Like Packerfan said, it is not capable of loading stuff from your computer to the GPS, though. Well, not officially, anyways. There is a way to do it, but it is unofficial. If your friend can afford it, I would go for a unit like the H2O if possible.
  5. I highly recommend the 2500 Energizer NiMH batteries ! I use them for both my camera and GPSr as well as various other things an have had excellent performance with them.
  6. Bummer, I have my GPS and my radar detecter mounted to my windshield. Never been stopped or questioned about it, though.
  7. First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to volunteer to do a good thing. We need more people in this world like you Second, thank you for placing the cache back and helping hide it from view. Not many people would take the time to do that. Third, like the others pointed out, log the cache and come have fun with us !! You didn't mention it, but caches should have a letter in them explaining what they are just for situations like this so I assume this cache had no such letter. I've only placed one cache so far, but I am putting together several for placement next weekend and will be sure to include a letter of explaination. I do like your idea about putting something in or on the cache referencing CITO, as we call it. I try to pick up trash on every caching visit I make, but a CITO sticker on the cache might remind others to do the same. Excellent idea !
  8. I was a paramedic for 8 years but I have been in Pharmaceuticals (blood banking) for the part 13 years. Currently, I am a Biomedical Manager in the blood banking industry.
  9. I like the rule...except...when someone places a micro in an area that could have supported a reqular cache and it interferes with my placing a regular cache : ) But that's just my opinion !!
  10. The E2 should be more than sufficient ! I use a TX and it is overkill, to say the least. Many are using Palm of much older vintage with great success. Good luck !!
  11. I've used Garmin, Magellan, and Lowrance and always end up back at Lowrance. They seem to provide the best bang for the buck. Just my opinion. I use an H2O and love it.
  12. I always signe the log is possible. I have had two encounters where I was unable to sign the log. One, the log was missing and I had no replacement, the other was wet and I couldn't signed, but I did try. I do document every cache with a photograph in case there is ever a question.
  13. I always read the mission. To me, that is the interesting part of the travel bug idea. Otherwise, a travel bug would just be swag.
  14. Although I frequent the forums, I somehow missed that this had happened. When I read the first post, I was at a loss for words and nearly in tears even though I never had the pleasure of meeting this man and his family. Even though I never met Helmut, I joined gc.com about the same time that he did and I have read his post for years and viewed at the photos he posted in his gallery. I felt as though I knew him and I felt as though I knew his family. I took the time tonight to read each and every response in this thread and I now feel that I can talk about this. It is truly amazing how easy it is to become familiar with someone (and even feel close to them) via the internet. This has caused me to think back on everyone who I have met through the internet and even back to those from the BBS days and remember the impact that people have had on my life through computer communication. There are so many people that have been part of my life that I have never had the chance to shake their hand or share a laugh with. I am saddened by this but at the same time, I know that my life has been unmeasurably enriched because of their presence in my life even though it was not a physical presence. I am a better person because of people like Helmut. To Ashley and Family- please know that your father touched many people. The number can never be measured because so many people have come and gone through gc.com, but I know if they spent anytime in the forums, they were impacted in some way by Helmut's post. Even if it was just learning something from what he posted, we were impacted. Please take strength from knowing how important he was to the geocaching community. As I turn 40 in a couple of weeks. Helmut will definitely be on me mind. I am so fortunate to still have my father in my life. I grieve at your loss. There are no words that can make this any easier for you.
  15. Email sent in reference to Oklahoma coin.
  16. Welcome aboard !! Careful, geocaching may be addictive !
  17. Here in the USA, they would be illegal. I don't know what the laws are in other countries, though. I am going to use CD with freeware and shareware, but no music.
  18. I use GSAK to create a usr file and transfer it to the card. I then place the card into my H2O and load the data. No big deal since I only do it weekly. It isn't that much harder than attaching a cable to the unit. The card is located below the batteries and I change them weekly so I do it all at the same time.
  19. I think the problem on this one is that it isn't remotely religious. It is very religious if you read the original post followed by Keystone's post. I have to side with Keystone on this one. It doesn't belong anymore than a cache that forcefully promotes Islam, Satanism, Buddism, Liberalism or Consevatism. I don't mind themed caches where the theme is secondary to the cache, but caches with politcal or religious themes where participation in the theme is strongly (forcefully) invoked should not be approved, in my opinion.
  20. Good choice on the camera, IMHO. I like the 2500mAh Energized NiMH batteries. I've used 5-6 different NiMH brands over the years and these seem to be the best yet for me.
  21. Muddler, that is pretty much how "Team ARC" does it when we hunt together. We run from two to four tema members usually and we try to make sure everyone actually "finds" the cache before it gets grabbed.

It is in the top right corner...click on "Log Your Visit". BTW, Welcome !
  23. Using my Palm TX, I generate a pocket query and import to GSAK. Once in GSAK, I export to HTML. I then use Plucker and Plucker Desktop to move the HTML files to my TX. Once of the options in GSAK is to "show hints on the same page". When I look up a cache, it has all the information and photos with the exception of the map on my TX, incuding the hints. THat is my method, anyways.
  24. I am on my 3rd Lowrance (H2O Plus) and I love it. I am a diehard Lowrance fan, though. I have tried Garmin and Magellan and they are great units, as well, but I always end up back with a Lowrance.
  25. I use the Energizer 2500's and they last about twice as long as standard alkalines in my GPSr and Digicam. They supposedly are good for 1000 recharges. Chances are, I will never charge them that many times as they keep coming out with better batteries. I have some Radio Shack 1200s that I bought years ago for a digicam that now serve well for my various remote controls, keyboard and mouse. They probably have well over 500 charges and are still going strong. In 6 years, I have probably bought 10 batteries and one charger. It has powered 10-15 cameras, 5 GPSrs, and numerous other devices around the house. Well worth the expense !
