  1. Completed my first iPhone based Wherigo (using the Wherigo app) and worked mostly fine, just a couple of hiccoughs but nothing terminal. For those having trouble getting cartridges to load on their iphones, I use my desktop machine to save the cartridges to a Dropbox folder (HEAPS easier to search for what you want this way), sync, locate the file in Dropbox on my phone, and then select "Open With" from the list and pick Wherigo. Loads beautifully. I'm hoping that because there are apps readily available now this will keep the Wherigo concept alive. Off to learn how to build my first cartridge!
  2. I've just been in the South Pacific caching and used an iOS app without live maps. As long as you can communicate with the satellites you will still be able to use the app, just old school without maps. I did churn through battery though when I was doing this so remember to switch back to airplane mode when you don't need it.
  3. This post is a breath of fresh air. I'm tired of negativity about the state of caching today. There are more options than ever for a person to cache in whatever style and with whatever goals you wish. Long live geocaching! Here here!!
  4. As a new player I'm loving this discussion. It's clearing up many historical questions I have and I especially liked tozainamboku's timeline. Keep going!
  5. Thanks for the links, and sorry to be a pain, but even after having RTFM, there seems to be no discussion on the limitations of showing caches with difficulty level of 3 and above. Multi, mystery, etc. I am aware of, but I didn't read anything about the caches difficulties. Checking back on a couple of my other finds I see that I must have "adapted in the field" to find them as I hadn't twigged earlier. And if this is the hidden message that Groundspeak have applied to the Intro App, then I think I finally understand why so many long-time cachers are so dismissive of the newer "app only" cachers.
  6. As a newbie, I'm still only using the Intro app. For the most part, it's all that I need/can manage right now. I plan to "move on" to full app and POM once I hit a few milestones. Small steps. But I've noticed that a few traditional caches are listed on the website but don't show up on the Intro App. I discovered this when doing a series in a park and when I tried to look for the sixth cache (which I KNEW was there because I'd researched it via the website first) the little circle didn't appear. Cache in question is GC51DBP. The following day I noticed the same happening with GC2P7V5. Again, pre-research tells me it's here but the Intro App was blank. And yes, I was within range of both these examples. Any reason for this?
  7. Then paid for app it is. Will treat myself to it when I hit a milestone. Gotta do some hard yards with the bare minimum to appreciate all the good stuff later.
  8. Wow, this topic took some crazy twists and turns. I understand that there are some ethical reasons why folks wouldn't want to advocate logging PMO caches, but as others have alluded to, it's a family game and having the whole family purchasing premium membership for a family of 4 just isn't economical. I came to this topic via the "Geocaching with kids..." topic and that's where this method of PMO logging was suggested. Where each family member has their own GC account (head over to that other topic to read about other options) this seems like a manageable way for kids to be involved but without the cost (especially when they're usually doing all their caching with a responsible adult). So it's less about freeloaders and more about Groundspeak's current business model that doesn't offer an option for families. BTW, (as the responsible adult in question) I'm not a premium member yet as I have more than enough public caches for me to work through atm. I plan to reward myself/family with PM once we hit a milestone.
  9. When my family started I instinctively started an account for each individual - the kids have their own email addresses so why not. It wasn't until I came across the stats for teams that I realised there could be some advantage in grouping all our finds together. Where others have noted that they're all together when they cache, we cache in different combinations of family members and I find that it's a more accurate record of what each of us has been doing. For instance DS 9 has 37 finds but DS 12 has 28. Yes, I do have to nag a little to get some of the logs written up but as they get older and go out with their own buddies on caching adventures, it's best that they're caching-independent of me early.
  10. I suspect that the limited use of HTML is so that the files can be viewed successfully on many platforms and devices. A little HTML is better than plain text alone but it's also a bit of a tease when all you want to do is pop in a plain jane table. When you consider that there are so many ways to view a cache entry it's probably a wise move to keep things simple.
  11. Can't believe I sat through that whole video, but now I know =8)
  12. If I were to choose to buy either Premium membership or the app, which should come first?
