  1. Well, it's obvious that I can't seem to phrase posts without upsetting someone, so I shall wander on my merry way. I can carry on finding boxes without posting on the forums or logging finds on the site, so I will. I thought I could join in some nice discussions, but it seems I've misjudged a lot of old, set-in-stone views and opinions, and that maybe my views are just too extreme for the people here. Oh well. At least I've found a hobby I can enjoy Thanks for the support from those that gave it. I shall see a lot of you next week at the pub meet, and might meet a few at caches, but this is the last you'll see of me electronically. -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  2. quote:Originally posted by Tim & June:Under Jeremy there are a number of people worldwide. Representing the UK on Geocaching.com we have: Moss Trooper, Richard and Beth and June and I, who discuss issues between ourselves before decisions are taken. Ooooh, I thought your actual job was just forum moderator. I'm confused now. Are the UK admins propers representatives (i.e. spokespersons) or are you approvers and moderators of discussion boards? In my experience there's a lot of difference between the job titles, although little difference in the jobs the uK admins seem to do....? -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  3. Yeah, what he said I agree with everything Mugless says. We don't want rules and regulations. That's what a) the internet and the open country are all about. And this sport comprises the best of both. Keep it simple! -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?

  7. Miscommunication versus trolling Cheers to the Good Shepherds for showing me the way. Indeed, my communication skills online are not what they ought to be, and perhaps I tried to jum pin with botrh feet and join the mood of the forums (which I read as generally moany and complainy). I guess I judged it wrongly. And damnit, as an englishman, I defned my right to a good moan. And the right to express my opinion in public. And to answer earlier criticisms, i haven't been knocking or reacting negatively to this sport, but to the proposed changes and the ideas that peopel have. Which I'm pretty sure is the idea of a discussion forum. At the risk of being flamethrowered again, here is what I think: This forum seems (to me, in my humble opinion) to be not a discussion forum, but an argument forum. The difference? A discussion is a calmly undertaken comparison of views, in which all parties entre with the willingness to have their view changed by the other's case. A discussion has well-reasoned arguments from each side, and at the end of it, there is a winner. An argument is similar, but each side enters it with the determination to win and not change their views. If they have to resort to personal insults or petty remarks to acheive this, then so be it. In an argument, because neither side is prepared to give in, there are no winners. Come on people, lets stop being arguing losers and become mature (except in Michael Blitz's case, of course) and sensible (except in Pid's case, of course) people. -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?

  9. Indeed, thankyou Kouros. Northumbrian: Last week I was moanign that my GPS hadn't yet arrived. A lot has happened since then, i.e. it has arrived and I went and found a cache at the weekend. Personally I can't wait for this weekend to come so I can find some more, but I doubt you care about that. And I didn't say that anyone had left the forums because of you, but people like you. From a brief look, it seems that Huga has left. Hornet seems to have been a very active poster in the past, and hasn't posted in a while (I don't know any of his history so have no idea if he's left or just gone quiet), and now T&J are quietening their activities. And while I'm not entireley blameless for some of the messages that have been flying around, I think I've been treated with a total lack of respect. It was sheer chance that I stumbled across these forums before I owned a GPS, and I'm beginning to wish I hadn't. What do peopel want? An x-found limit on starting posting? I'm off for a Friday lunchtime calming beer now, and I hope that it wil lall be peaceful here when I return. Good day to you sir. -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  10. Yeah, I shall definitely be there. If not at least to prove to everyone who's attacked me recently that I do exist and that generally I'm a nice guy. See you next week, guys! -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  11. quote:Originally posted by The Northumbrian:Sinse you started coming on the forum all you have done is twist on , from your very first message, still begining to wonder if you are just a Troll, go and join a tidly winks club. Oh screw you. Yeah, like I'd go out and buy a GPS receiver and find (admittedly one one) caches just so I could post on the forums? Don't apply your loose morals to other people, it really won't wash. In fact, it's replies from people like you that seems to have caused various people to have left these forums recently, and frankly, given the personal attacks I've had to posts that are not personally inflammatory, I feel liek leaving too. -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  12. I may be new, but these forums semm...well...dull. Nothing new is ever posted. It seems to be mostly "Congrats so-and-so for reaching so-many caches" followed by a million "Yeah, congrats" (essentially me-too posts), or moans about something followed by a million "Yeah, me too" posts. Observe the T&J resignation post - it's followed by a load of sheep saying "Yeah, what he said". C'mon people....let's trying thinking for ourselves for a change, and maybe, just maybe, we'll get something done. -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  13. T&J said "this topic is not up for discussion", so any polls like this that are essentially designed to show T&J levels of support are pointless. There can be no purpose to them. That may sound harsh, but I support T&J's decision and their wish for their to be no discussion of the matter. Which is kind of negated by my posting, but hey. -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?

  15. Despite the fact I haven't been here very long, and that I was introduced to this sport by my brother who saw an article in a paper, I've gotta say that blanket advertising, as opposed to person-to-person is probably a bad idea for such a small sport that relies on secrey of the caches to maintain it's integrity -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  16. quote:Originally posted by Morseman: It was, however, parallel to the point given, so human error had crept in making the possition parallel to where it should be, but offset to the north of its actual place. Oh, you were doing so well expalining yourself right up to the end there. A position cannot be parallel to anything, it's a matter of geometry. But I see what you mean, I'm just nitpicking your semantics now -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  17. quote:Originally posted by Morseman:Another is due to map making errors, and errors by the Ordnance Survey in specifying where the Trig point was. You need two lines for parallel conditions, not a line and a point...? -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  18. OK, so I've been reading a few of the posts from the last week, especially those ones regarding guidelines, and the arguments that Huga was bringing up... Now, as far as I see, the Geocaching.com pages says "No food, but bottles of water are a good thing". And lots of people, including Tim and June, have said "No food or drink at all." But in another post, I think it was Tim and June (I've lost the post) said "tinned food and canned drinks are OK". Now to me this is all a bit contradictory and in some cases apparently hipocritical. I would very much appreciate a bottle of mineral water if I'd just climbed a mountain, but would be less certain about food...or maybe if it were wrapped properly...oh, i don't know. So, now that there are real efforts being made to "follow guidelines", can we have some clarification of what they are? Is food OK? What about tinned food? Is drink OK? What about bottles of water? Oh, and BTW, my etrex arrived this morning! I hope to start finidng caches this weekend. -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?

Wot you mean from people with guns 'n things? Nice people who surround you and scare the shhh.. the living nightlights out of you? Nice people who really ought to be locked up somewhere and the key thrown away? No, I mean that in the current terrorism climate and general decline of society, won't rummaging in undergrowth, or anywhere else for that matter, at night, be considered as dodgy/suspicious? I'm not talking about being on people's land at night, but more having anyone that sees you phone the Police.... As I said, i don't want this sport banned before I can find my first cache! Etrex update: Globalpositioningsystems said they sent out my GPS last week, so ought to be here by now. Am now getting on to the Royal Mail... -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  20. What exactly is this whole night-caching thing anyway? Do Dan and Pid really go out in the middle of the night looking for caches? Isn't that just dumb, given how hard it already seems in the light? As to that combining with recent fears, won't being discovered at night, rummaging around for a cache, just increase suspicions? I've yet to find my first cache, I don't want this sport banned before I can! -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  21. Cheers for the support Pid, and shame on all you others! No, I'm not related to Pid. I've no idea who that particular mainac (I've been reading some of his cache pages and previous forum posts) is... Hmm, I failed on one of his caches today too. My ETrex still hasn't arrived (plan to phone the suppleirs tomorrow), so I converted to OS coordinates, looked it up on my map, and thought "How hard can it be?", and went there. It was only after an hour's searching that I realised that 6-digit Os coords will only get me to within 100 metres! Ooops. -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  22. Hmmm, surely not everyone reads these forums, and therefore it's only going to be implemented by the (seemingly) cliquey group of people that do. In my opinion it's not terribly necessary, since the cache is uniquely located by its latitude and longitude. Surely planning by those is far easier than by county. Especially since some counties are enormous, and those that live near a boundary aren't necessarily going to find that a cache on the far side of the same county is very close. Plus in my opinion it makes the cache title look messy. But then I'm a perfectionist. Properly capitalised cache titles for me. BTW, no sign of the GPS in the post yet. Does anyone know how long www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk usually take to deliver? I've been waiting 7 days and have seen o sign of my new toy -- Why'd ya have to go and make things so complicated?
  23. I appear to have got off on the wrong foot with you guys, especially JeremyP. I didn't realise how sensitive you all seem at the moment. I've just read some more posts (I'd only read the complaining ones about cache contents), and it looks like my tongue-in-cheek attempt was a bit off the playing field. I am sorry. I've added some profile info too, so hopefully you guys can 'associate' with me or 'bond' or whatever it is you feel you need to do before you can accept a new cacher as a human being. And by the way: Hello everyone! It's only a hunt for an ammo box - why be so serious?
  24. quote:Originally posted by jeremyp:Your statement is grammatically incorrect BTW. "we find" would imply that *you* have found something in a cache. Your profile suggests this is not the case. Ever heard of the "Royal we"? Since I plan to start finding caches as soon as my eTrex arrives in the post, I suggest you think before jumping to conclusions. Anyway, as to ammo....I agree with MCL on the live ammo front (about claiming to have found it by the road). Seems sensible.
  25. Nothing wrong with spent cartrigdes - their harmless, afterall. In fact it seemed pointless to bringing it up. Must we question everything we find in caches now? And live ammo...use it of course!
