  1. Yes! And thanks. I really want the perfect log book. I've seen an assortment of spiral bound books but never that one. Where(besides Amazon) would I find those? PS- Thanks to everyone else for the other suggestions also.
  2. I've come across several logbooks lately that seemed to suffer from the same problem. They appeared to be of the same sort of notebook type of book: Small, maybe 3"x3" approx and most important to my comment's here, the were of the glue bound type. Not spiral bound but actually bound like a book with a solid spine. Here's the problem I have observed: They all were falling apart. The pages were all there but loose and easily to drop. Upon entering my info the lose pages could have easily blown away. I like the idea of a logbook more than just the log where all you enter is your name and date. It's kinda cool IMO to see the comments. I'm preparing my first hide and have put some considerable effort into this including repainting an ammo can a less ominous shade of green and collecting some sweet swag. Any body have some suggestions on the perfect logbook? TIA
  3. Wow talk about attitude. I should have known better, you posted on a public forum looking for input about your first TB, I made reference to your "geocachers will get a TB, then it all goes downhill. I'm one of those cacher who actually still enjoys moving travel bugs more than "chasing geocoin icons," and happily move them, when I find them. Hopefully you have good luck with someone grabbing the TB from your first cache, quickly. I've placed many TBs in my caches, and the new "fad" is for cachers to discover them, but never move them from the cache. Well maybe you and I have gotten off on the wrong foot. Maybe not. It just seems like most topics get hijacked by know-it-all types who come off as if they owned the sport of GCing. Personally, I think TB's are cool because they're trackable. To me basically every piece of swag is TB, just not as trackable. What good is a geocoin if all you do is shut it away in a drawer? It makes me wonder why you said, "I'm one of those cacher who actually still enjoys moving travel bugs more than "chasing geocoin icons," and happily move them, when I find them." in the first place. Take care and maybe we'll meet in person some day.
  4. Famous last words. Yep, I enjoy doing so many things outside as well. I just find a way to tie them into geocaching. Fishing? I may hide a cache next to my favorite fishing hole. Backpacking? Is there a cache or two along the route? Canoing? I'll hit up the island caches in the are. Hiking? A perfect companion for geocaching. Visiting historic sites. Lots of caches highlight historic sites. OK, you have a point there. It is cool to combine GCing with stuff you already do. I guess that's what I've been doing all week. I just mean that I don't ever intend to take a GCing vacation but rather add some GCing to it. I've been surrounded by GC's up here but haven't even done a hunt a day. It's about fun not compulsion.
  5. Hey thanks. The cool thing about this TB find is that it comes right before I am to place my first hide. So, that means whoever is the FTF on my FH will get a TB! How do ya like that? Just remember that Travel Bugs aren't prizes, they belong to someone else. Thanks for the reminder but other than claiming delight in finding a TB I don't see where I indicated that my found TB's was a prize. In fact, in a few posts up from this one I stated that I was going to place this TB in my first hide. You said the FTF would "get" a TB (as in receive one, or have the opportunity to find one?) I'm not trying to damper your excitement, but TBs are no where near is popular as geocoins and the highly sought after Jeep Travel bugs. Don't be surprised if the TB actually sits in your cache for some time. You're not trying to put a damper my excitement? OK, then don't and back off while your at it. And I think I'd just as soon find out for myself how popular TB's are on my own and without your advice. All right? Have a nice day.

  8. Yesterday our whole family spent the entire day down in Reds Meadow (Mammoth Lakes area, Eastern Sierra Nevada). On our way out I remembered that I had downloaded a GC site that we would be driving near so we attempted a find. We were successful in finding it and it's a great GC as well. Upon opening it and sifting through the swag the wife and kids were mystified by the "dog tag on a chain" that was contained inside the cache. This our first TB find and we're thrilled. It will be taken to Southern California and placed in GC down there adding another 300 miles or so to it's journey. I just want to say that GCing is fun. It isn't going to become a compulsion with us because we enjoy doing so many things outside. However, it will add another dimension to our activities. Right now we're on vacation. It's not a GCing vacation. I think that would be totally gnerdy. But it is a fun addition. BTW- I have logged the TB properly. It would appear that it hasn't always been logged because it seems that it was placed after a prior find but before mine. Cheers!
  9. Whoo-hoo! Our first TB find.http://www.geocaching.com/track/log.aspx?L...0b-cf935cd93f4e
  10. I think that you may be misinterpreting what it says. Buying electronics from an e-tailer is nothing new. Also, many online sellers are Ebay Express sellers. As long as they are authorized Garmin resellers you're OK. Register your unit with Garmin ASAP and enjoy the benefits that Garmin gives their customers.
  11. You folks can go back and forth on the subject of warranties all you want but the original post was about how crappy Magellan GPS units are. It's true. Magellan is a terrible company that doesn't care about their customers. If you have a Magellan unit and you haven't had any problems then great. Good for you. But a lot of us have been suckered recently into buying a Magellan product only to be burned by shoddy merchandise and horrible tech support and service. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM MAGELLAN.
  12. How strange that this isn't on the Garmin web site. http://i.walmart.com/i/rb/4266.pdf
  13. Crap! You're right. It's expired. Sorry. This page has all the current rebates and promos: http://www8.garmin.com/whatsNew/currentpromotions/
  14. Where did you see this rebate? I cant find it on there site. Go here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=169612

  16. Because of geocaching I got some kids all excited about hiking and going on a treasure hunt. Top that. They are the future.
  17. Thanks for all the compliments, guys. I guess I should give some credit to my kid who came up with the idea of using the cassette slot as the basis of a mount. It was a collaborated effort. And right, like I said, I don't use the tape player. Team MnMizzou: I've never actually tried the bean bag because of the reviews I read. Also, I live in a mountainous area with lots of windy roads and fear the BB would def. slide around but I do like the idea of it's total portability and obvious compatibility with any and all vehicles. Is there any modification that you do to make it a little more stable and sticky as far as staying in place goes?
  18. If you think ND is an incredibly bad movie your credibility is gone. This whole GCing deal is sooo ND it's not funny. (I mean that in a good way)
  19. A long time ago I heard SWAG was also an acronym for Scientific Wild A** Guess. ...using the SWAG method we calculated the answer to how many pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
  20. Ouch. Around here, friends don't let friends use minimags. I carry a Fenix P1D-CE, literally ten times brighter than a standard minimag at half the size. It has let me find camo'ed micros tucked deep into bushes when just sunlight and eyeballs weren't enough. Uh hmm...Maglite makes LED flash lights that are designed and manufactured here in the USA. They also can supply spare and replacement parts for their products.
  21. I recently posted a response to looking for my first GPS unit I mentioned that I took a 1700 mile road trip and that the Garmin 60Csx worked great for both navigationg and geiocaching. A couple of you PM'd me asking if I used some sort of mount for the GPSr unit. Well, the answer is yes. However I've been disappointed with the OE mounts available. The windshield mounted suction cup models put the GPSr too far away for me to see it properly and I just don't like the way it looked. The bean bags are going to slide around. Glueing the mount to the dashboard was out of the question. So, I came up with an idea for my vehicle: Here's the dash and instrument panel on my Dodge Durango. Now I did buy the windshield suction cup mount for the 60CSx but after trying it I found that it was too far away from my eyes to be effective. What you see his is very easy to make. In fact this is the prototype which I haven't really improved upon yet. It's an old cassette tape with a plexiglass square crazy glued to it. You can guess what happens next. The suction cup gloms on to the plex and viola, the thing is now mounted in front of the car stereo. I lose very little in the way of control of the radio/cd/tape deck. In fact I don't even listen to tapes. It works really well. My road trip was at the end of June, beginning of July and went from Southern California, through Nevada, across the entire state of Utah, to Colorado and home through New Mexico and Arizona. Needless to say it was hotter than hot. The suction cup let go a time or two but that had nothing to do with my gizmo. In fact, this way it's less exposed to the sun and elements and eyes of a thief. The plexi/tape part broke once but it from the weakness of the plastic cassette case itself. I stopped a store and got some more crazy glue and it hasn't come apart again. I'd like to figure out another way to do this using the A/C and heating vents. Who's gonna figure out that one?
  22. I've never heard of a virus that attacks your stereo.
  23. I'm preparing my first hide and I really want to do it right. I've collected some nice SWAG to fill it with. My question is this: As far as CD's go is it considered gauche if I place music that I've burned as opposed to store bought albums? My question isn't about copyright law. It goes to quality of merchandise.
  24. I have one of those too. The issue that I have with MS Lumbar Packs is that they don't use a wicking material on the parts and surfaces that touch your body resulting in perspiration build up between the pack and your waist/lumbar. Otherwise they're great.
