Greetings fellow geocachers! A while back, I sold an article to TriValley Magazine about geocaching. They've been holding if from print thru the winter and will publish it this May. Meanwhile, they want to use the time for more photographs of TriValley Geocachers out doin' their thing. As a long-time PR professional, I can tell you that the press usually gets it about 98% right. The "insiders," however (those interviewed or involved) perceive the errors as glaring. It's just the way it is. It happens. For those of you in this thread who are journalists, I challenge you to take a part in the spreading of the word, so to speak. Many "local" type publications (and some national ones) are open to by-lined articles by freelancers not on staff. What better way to tell the TRUE story, than have a geocacher write it?

Calling all Danville, San Ramon, Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore geocachers! Has anyone seen the newest lifestyle publication in our area, Tri Valley Magazine? I have been in discusions w/ them about writing an article on the local geocaching scene.... creative caches, interesting caching personalities, great locations, etc. Anyone interested in being featured or recommending areas/caches to feature? I'm open to input and want to send a photographer out to tag along on a hunt or two. Please email me at pamglynn@yahoo.com if you are interested or have suggestions. Thanks! On our very first cache, we came across a rattler - not 10 feet from the cache. Quite a large one too, and we enjoyed looking at it. They won't mess with you if you don't mess with them. Just tread cautiously.

Headin' to the Healdsburg/Santa Rosa area to restock the wine cellar. Caching will be a secondary activity, so anyone know if any caches AT or NEAR wineries in that locale? I've targeted the caches at Simi and Ferrari-Carano - any others?

Did you "let" the reporter find the first cache?

Deerchaser - my first cache "turned up missing" after a controlled burn/brush removal. About 3 days before I went to it to remove the camera and log for the winter. I was SO bummed, and I know how you feel! Keep on caching!

You're a funny man Ron! [:-)] No TIME to go caching - gotta get the kids to school, finish a newsletter, pick the kids up, take 'em ice skating, and then hit the highway for the mountains. UNLESS you leave it in that new "used car" cache here in Dublin - I've a feeling I can fit that one in!

... I too got my doggie from the local shelter and she is a GEM! Wouldn't have it any other way. She's lucky to be alive and we're even luckier to have her.

Although my husband discovered this "sport," I am the more avid outdoorsperson and probably half the caches that we've found have been just me and the kidlets.

At the minimum, have her sit with you and review all the cache pages as you decide which ones to go after. Once she reads the online logs of all the happy people, neat things left for kids, and sees that many of the caches are in parks, etc. she might change her mind. Maybe she has visions of ramboesque mercenary types (no offense to you ramboesque mercenary types!) suspending booby-trapped caches from precarious cliffs or something! And MAYBE.... you could convince her to come on a hunt with you! Pack a picnic, make it more about being together in the great outdoors than caching. But careful.... more than ONE man on the forums here has lost his GPSr to his caching-crazy wife after this attempt! Good luck!

There's a cache at Mt. Reba called Hi-Lo - still a virgin, last time I checked!

I live in Dublin CA and have cousins in Bismarck ND. I wanted to place a cache in a little-known canyon trail by my house, with a Travel Bug in it with a goal of getting to Bismarck. While gathering booty and awaiting TB tags for my first cache and travel bug, another cacher (a)placed a cache at the end of the canyon, and ( put a travel bug in it that is supposed to go to (you guessed it) Bismarck, ND. Also.... since that cache was placed there, I didn't place MINE in the canyon. I eventually released the travel bug, and it wandered around the SF Bay area for a while, and had a brief stay in the canyon cache right by my house.

I too, have combined bookcrossing and geocaching. I always have a few small books, ready to release, in my caching backpack in the hopes of a large enough cache container. A local paper interviewed me about bookcrossing and I even managed to get in a plug about geocaching! Welcome to the addiction. BTW - if a book won't fit - put in a george! (www.wheresgeorge.com)

It showed up in my Amazon Goldbox for $200 (2) and I couldn't resist. Anyone have a set? What do you think? What do you use them for? We do a lot of hiking & some mountain biking in the Sierra with the kids (4 & 6). Thought if I strapped one to the 6yr old (a true explorer and daredevil mountain biker) I wouldn't have to always be shouting "Where are you?" as we trek thru the woods. Also thought they'd come in handy at the ski area as the kids become more independent. Was this a "good" impulse buy? Or will they sit in the closet and gather dust?

Here in CA, we are finally welcoming cooler weather which means hiking without carrying gallons of water, sweatin' up a storm, whining hot kids, etc. BUT - Spring is the BEST. The hills are green, the grass is short - none of the knee deep sticker weeds we contend with Summer and Fall!

Oh drat! I recently had my first cache that I hid turn up missing too (I lost my marbles in the forest - in Big Trees Park) and was so bummed! I enjoyed Zebra and so did my kids! It was our first "urban." I wonder of someone is being sneaky and moved it to another uh.... box. I usually acquire those items on Sundays and maybe will get them from there just to check.

.... because it wasn't the kewl booty we'd intended. We'd given the goody bag to our then 4 yr old to carry whilst we all set off hiking nowhere NEAR the cache (rookies, ha!). By the time we'd figured it out and tramped back to the car, MinnieGlynn had dropped the goodies and we never found them. I unearthed a "McToy" from under the seat and that was all we had to leave in the cache. I was gratified the next day when I saw the log of the subsequent visitor and their child took the McToy we'd left.

So far, I've "released" one bookcrossing book - in a geocache of course! I figure I'll get a better "hit rate" by leaving my bookcrossings and wheresgeorges in caches than just random releases.
