  1. To be fair to garmin it is incredibly difficult to hold the unit comfortably while blocking the barometer hole. But you seem to have found a way.
  2. after you get your refund send him a link to this thread.
  3. The main difference is that the Cx is crap and the HCx is excellent. The whole point of a gps is to er... receive the satellite data and tell you where you are...whereever you are.
  4. @QuigleyJones Why do you want to delete it? I had a problem with BlueChart where I had two codes for different but overlapping areas and when both codes were loaded at the same time it was impossible to know which segments belonged to which code.
  5. I use an HCx although I only sell the 60CSx because it's easier to sell even though it's not as good a unit. I've used the 60CSx for a while now and my opinion on the button layout has not changed. It's crocked. The rocker has no tactile feedback. Even the 76CSx has a bit of tactile feedback and the buttons are better with regards to ergonomics. The 60CSx screen is really really dull. The screen also has this stupid bar across the top to tell you what screen you are on, which makes having a larger screen redundant. In fact the hcx shows a bit more of the map than the 60CSx due to the fact that it has finer resolution and therefore displays more pixels. But the extra bulk of the 60CSx for no benefit is just ridiculous. I could sell my hcx at more than what I paid for it and use the 60CSx if I wanted to. If they were both the same price I'd get the HCx, in fact I'd get the HCx even if it was dearer. Usually with electronics you pay a premium for a smaller size with equal capabilities (barring the external antenna and serial port) but not in the topsy turvy world of garmin. The 60CSx is just living on it's former reputation when it's sirfstarII chip was so much better than the eTrex line but with the introduction of the Media Tek into the H models, the 60CSx has lost it's main selling point.
  6. @QuigleyJones Thanks, looks like the 'complicated answer' will work. I'm on a mac and I can't get to the Windows pc where I do my map stuff right now. Is 'utilities' a menu item that is visible when Mapsource is open?
  7. Is there a way *easily* to remove any unlock codes from maps loaded into Mapsource?
  8. Coming Soon (like early next week) Side by side test, Invisible Shield vs Boxwave shield might be worth the wait.
  9. If I have CN Australia, can I combine it with the European version of CN NT into a single file?
  10. * Much much better bicycle mount (Etrex Vista HCX is horrible--see other posts) you can get equally good after market bicycle mounts. * Remote antenna interface (Vista has none) not many people actually use the external antenna * Easier access to "Find, Mark, Page, Menu," etc. An illusion. The 'mark' button could not be easier on the hxc, same for the Page button and menu button. * Rugged design as compared to etrex Agreed it may *look* 'more rugged' but is in fact equally flimsy. * Better Auto set up Inconclusive * Bigger screen Yet lower resolution and very very dull. * Faster processor (about twice as fast) faster doing what?
  11. it's not that anything has been 'fixed' it's just that the H series use a vastly superior Media Tek chipset which is as good as the SirfstarIII. The reason for removing the world map is to distinguish the H from non H. Yes it is true that the new H series can be held in any orientation without any noticeable effect.
  12. It's more than 'strange' it's impossible.
  13. Compared to the way gps are going the Venture is rubbish. Inbuild memory is soooo last year. Yes you can load maps, which is easily ascertained by a quick trip to the garmin website. It can only hold 24mb of maps though. That was a big deal when the b/w Vista came out but now it's just a sneaky marketing ploy by garmin to trick people such as yourself. You want an eTrex model that contains the letter 'H', which tells you it has the high sensitivity chipset. Next you want to have an 'x' in the name too which tells you it takes removable storage media so you can load as much as you like. The 'C' in the name tells you it has a colour screen. Oh yeah the Venture also has 14 hours of battery life which is also very poor. You want to get the LegendHCx or VistaHCx, the Vista has an electronic compass and barometric altimeter built in and in my opinion is well worth the extra $20. You should not pay more than $210 either from ebay or elsewhere.
  14. Question: Is calibrating a senstitve electronic instrument designed to pick up the weak magnetic field of the Earth not a good idea on a metal bonnet with sources of magnetism under the hood. Answer: Yes. Remember, any source of electricity in motion will generate an electric field. Like powerlines for example.
  15. Go to the Map page and hit the submenu and select map setup. You will see five pages along the top, go to the third from left, the one with the waypoint symbol and you will see some settings displayed. The top setting adjusts what zoom level, waypoints and poi's show up. I set mine on 20 metres mainly because the poi's get in my way.
  16. The recent units have shipped with SW Version 2.40, the earlier units that shipped with 2.20 or 2.30 cannot be upgraded to 2.40 (apparently). The update from 2.30 to 2.40 did not make any difference to the low speed tracking.
  17. But before I make sure that a card works I need to know if there is any point in getting a faster card, with regard to the scolling a zoomed out map problem.
  18. They are basically the same maps. Metro Guide does not do auto routing and is mainly for units that don't support auto routing. CN does auto routing which is supported by the 60CSx.
  19. All the non H eTrex range have the same capabilities with regard to reception. All the new model eTrex that have an H in their name have equivalent reception to the 60CSx with its quad helix antenna. What you are after is the Vista HCx which does everything you require for about $210 on eBay or elsewhere.
  20. When say, CN is loaded to the computer in its mapsource container and then the Bluechart CD is put into the computer does the computer already know that there is a mapsource product loaded and only load the maps from Bluechart to the already loaded Mapsource with CN?
  21. Hi, I'm still a little confused about this two maps on one card business. From what I gather the only way to put the bluechart and CN on the same card is to load them both at the same time, but how is that done? Seeing as they are both on different CD's. Is the idea to get them both into a single map file?
  22. Not true.

  24. It will take you to the cache as well and as accurately as a 60CSx however I dislike all the eTrex range that do not have the data entry button on the front.
  25. I'm using a US basemapped HCx with CN Australia which means that when I zoom out instead of defaulting to an Aussie basemap I see the full map which is very slow to scroll obviously. Anyway when downloading and uploading stuff to a micro sd card reader recently I notice that writing to the card is much slower than reading from the card. So what I was wondering is if a card with a faster write time will speed up map scrolling when zoomed out at high detail.
