These are not cosemetic but differences but ergonomic differences. The buttons on the 76CSx are better placed for ease of use becuase when you hold it in your hand the buttons fall in such a way that you can balance it easily in one hand and press a button with your thumb. On the 60CSx when you hold the unit in a normal way in one hand your thumb is not near any button. Not only that but the scroll button on the 76CSx is a completely different design that does not have the "spongy" imprecise feel of the 60CSx, in fact it has a tactile feedback which should always have been on the 60CSx. The main problem with the 76 is that it looks a bit old fashioned, like a bakelite gps from the 1940's, but the 60 has a much more macho look with it's faux 2 way transmitter look.

Green "loading" indicator on HCx, what is it loading?

I'll do some specific testing and report back. -
Green "loading" indicator on HCx, what is it loading?
gallet replied to gallet's topic in GPS technology and devices
I was thinking something like this which makes me wonder if the unit stores any and every unlock code that may have been used in it. Which makes me wonder about internal conflicts. I wonder if this is related to the recent fix in the software update about a problem with more than one unlock code used for a single unit. -

Well it doesn't which I find confusing. Still all works fine though. -
Green "loading" indicator on HCx, what is it loading?
gallet replied to gallet's topic in GPS technology and devices
Right but then why doesn't it do it every time a map set is remade. It is as if whatever it did before, it has somehow held in internal memory. -
I notice that when a mapset is loaded to a card and powered up that the first time you see a loading progress incator along the bottom of the screen before it boots. What is actually happening here because obviously the maps are not being transferred to internal memory. Now what is more confusing is that sometimes I have loaded different maps then changed sets again but when I put the first mapset back, there is no green loading bar. So does this mean that something got loaded the first time and stayed in internal memory?

Have you explored all the options in mapsetup? First thing that comes to mind is the detail level set it to "most" see if that makes a difference. Hiding the basemap is a good idea in order to check that the lack of detail you are seeing is actually from the basemap or CN, if you still see any streets with the basemap off then you can be sure you are viewing CN. To turn the basemap off go to the Map setup menu and select the icon across the top with the " i " symbol on it *then* press the menu button to get the hide/show options

I've just noticed this today. Has it always been there because I used to habitually press the light switch to check my battery level and I can't believe I never saw this before.

Just grabbed this off the Wiki... The basemap for the 300 is probably in four parts: * Worldwide map that contains borders of countries and some large cities, also contains some DEM. * Americas, Pacific, and Atlantic basemaps with major highways and interstates and DEM. Is this correct? I thought that there was only a worldwide basemap for the 300

Gilsson are morons. I bought a case for an eTrex Summit a while ago, as it was advertised to fit that model. However there's a (insert expletive here) hole in the front for the "pick stick" which is not on this model. When I queried Gilsson how they can claim this is the correct model for the Summit, they answered...I kid you not..."we didn't claim it was waterproof" Geddit? Moving on the the cases (they sent me two by mistake) both of them were incredibly poorly made, neither one fit, both fell apart.

Help choose GPS for a new UK geocacher
gallet replied to Maugray's topic in GPS technology and devices
Right then <rolls up sleeves>, What ever garmin you end up getting make sure it's an H model. Do be aware that the price difference between various models bought in the US is small, which means you will get better value by getting a better featured unit. You should buy from US ebay I can recommend myronglobal as reliable international sellers (look them up). VAT will be payable at your end but it will still be a lot less than buying in the UK. -
I presume you have already tried it and found that it won't work. I think it's locked to the internal serial number of the sd card. You can back up an img file exported from mapsource because the file contains the unlock code for the particular gps, but if you could "back up" the preloaded card then well... we all know what would happen don't we.

I think the Vista HCx is a better gps to use, but if it needs to be a 60CSx then you should consider the 76CSx which is the same unit with better ergonomics.
-
Use maps.google to find a street intersection near you, grab the coordinates from maps.google and then go to the intersection and take a reading with your gps, compare the results.
-
Is this found through the software menu like on a 60CSx?

Are you sure you need a driver for mac, what happens when you plug it in? Edit: OK I just checked by plugging my hcx into another mac that has never been used with my gps and I was able to have it mount on the desktop and also download waypoints directly into googleearthplus so it appears that no drivers are necessary. Isn't that why we use macs?

You should be able to pick up the garmin worldmap for $40 on eBay. But do realise that there's not much detail.

' Er...I'm not suggesting we shouldn't be allowed to edit posts. btw going back to the previous argument that someone can write a quick insult and edit it. So what, if they do that how does that prove what they wrote, all it proves is they edited their post.
-
@'mtn-man I don't see that changing, but who knows. Well let's hope that those who care will look into it again and maybe give it a trial. I've only ever seen that sort of 'make a quick post tell someone to *** and then deleted it' thing only once a few years ago. The internet seems to have grown up to the extent that hardly anyone deems it necessary any longer. The posters here seem pretty mature to me. It seems very easy to load the program I suggested for IE or to use Firefox and see the errors as you type. I see this issue as a "so what" issue in the grand scope of the priority list at Groundspeak. That's just my personal feeling about it though. I've already addressed the spell check issue above. Sure, it's not a change that is going to shake the world but that's not a reason to not make an easy improvement is it? Even the apple.com discussion site allows one to completely remove the tag, or are you saying that the geocaching site has a much greater share of morons than all the other sites? I know it's not going to get done unless someone says something precisely *because* it is not that important, but now that it's been pointed out perhaps the boards gods will see fit to reconsider? Anyway, I've made my point, and I'll leave it at that.
-
That doesn't work either due to the fact that misspelled words are often not picked because they are still actual words. In fact these are exactly the sorts of things that get missed in the preview. Even grammar checks don't work as it often picks up things that are not grammatically incorrect. No, the easiest solution for a better neater looking forum is to do what nearly everyone else does, (with good reason). EDIT: had to add a comma after "No"
-
All forums give you that opportunity, however Murphy's Law 5.1 sub paragraph 1.4.4 says, and I quote... The longer one spends checking spelling and grammar the more likely it is that an error will slip through that is noticed instantly that one posts Most other forums recognise that a couple of minutes grace is a good idea as it encourages corrections which make the forum more pleasant. Is there any reason *not* to give this grace period? Obviously the reason for adding the 'edited' tag is to stop an ambush, but that's not going to happen in two minutes.
-
This is one of the few forums that places an 'edited' tag at the bottom of an edited post even if it is edited immediately. Most other forums give the poster a few minutes grace before adding the 'edited tag'. Would it be difficult to implement that on this forum. I imagine that it would be a simple option in the board software.

It's a tricky one. Spinning around twice while holding it level is fine but the double turn can make you a bit dizzy and it looks weird in public. I've tried it on a flat surface which also works but it's a bit grippy. Garmin need to make a portable collapsible device, like a mini lazy susan, it's a wonder someone in China hasn't done it yet. Just make sure you are away from any potential sources of electrons in motion like overhead or underground power cables or other sources of magetism like engines. Having said all that mine calibrates fine inside my house only a few metres from the fridge which has a few neodymium magnets on it as well.
