  1. i dont know if this pertains to any of the newest releases... but when i log onto www.geocaching.com the page loads differently (as it should because of the new format) but all the boxes at the far left are gone..its just a blank space...the clikable boxes ie..hide and seek, getting started, resources, forums, etc....the boxes and words are gone...but when i run the mouse over the area tiny words pop up next to the cursor and i clik and it will take me there...but the actual boxes and words have vanished.... i dont know about any other problems yet since i dont use alot of the items....yet..... wanda texas ie7.....windows vista....
  2. hi all i was perusing the caches and waymarks for the smyrna tn area...and i see some in the area of SAM DAVIS HOME..... about a zillion years ago we lived in smyrna at a trailer park down the road from SAM DAVIS ROAD...and it was on SAM DAVIS RD...and on google maps it shows the possiblity of the one and same trailer park is STILL there...SHOCK SHOCK.....I think the name is now FAIRWAY MOBILE HOME PARK...500 sam davis rd.. my wwaayyyy off questions is what is that area like now....safe??...gangs??...crime??...etc.... we would love to go back there to see what the place looks like now and how much its been built up all around the area.... thanks\ happy hunting wanda texas
  3. i am ignorant about computers...i am running VISTA....i had been able to see the photos in the logs with no problems..you click on it...view...clik back out...clik next...etc...and had no problems.. now when i clik on the attachments in logs..the photos start flashing then (depending on the size of photo) and big white box covers half the pic...clik on that then the other side disappears...then the whole thing disappears ...and when you are cliking on either side it sends you to the next photo...and then an error box pops up talking about ''do you want to continue running scripts on this page...doing so can make interentet explorer unresponsive""".... now i did try to access the photos thru another persons computer that is not running VISTA...and the photos come up with a black back ground and they stay put..not flashing or disappearing...that is how i found the newest feature of the arrows in the photos that let you go to the next photo.... is there a problem with compatiblity with VISTA???? thanks wanda texas
  4. DONT GIVE UP....i consider myself new still... try this...i had to do this fnally to see if the stupid thing was working....i went down the road ...turned....turned...turned...and pulled into a parking spot at the grocery store and wrote down the coordinates for it...then went back home....put in the waypoint and said GOTO and followed it back to te parking spot...it worked... as everyone says do a level 1/1 to start with...and preferably one without trees or coverage.. i had found my first cache without a gps unit...so when i was getting frustrated i couldnt find anything i went back to that one but it had been washed away in the flooding and more frustration... one i tried for was a 3..lots of trees....it took me about 5 tries to finally find it and lots of bloodshed....i was reading the gps wrong....i THOUGHT that .10 (point one zero) meant 10 FEET...but it wasnt that....so i learned what point one zero meant...and that the gps does go into feet eventually..hhehehehe another one i tried for 3 times was in tree coverage and i got "lost" in the wooded area and went in circles and shed blood (you loose alot ot it doing this) and all logs after i was there said..easy find, quick grab, easy find etc so i gave it one last shot and i knew how to read the numbers now on the gps and i went right to it with no bloodshed and no getting lost.... so start easy and definitely use the hints...and pick ones with very little tree coverage.... i have been taken to some nice places i never knew existed around here..and without geocaching i would never have seen the areas... happy hunting wanda texas
  5. same of these stories are funny... nothing special here except for: bright white jockey mens undies in the parking lot of a casino in vegas....didnt get extra points for that find tho.... several (in different areas) womens panties and one bra... used condoms...if they used them in that vacinity it must have been very painful... a pair of jogging pants, a pair of tennis shoes, and a tshirt near a cache...at first i thought it was a child laying there but as i looked closer it was clothes..then i thought oh my god theres a naked man somewheres in here watching me!!!!!!!!...but others have found the clothes after me so either the clothes have been left there OR the naked man in the bushes is still out there.... another cache logs warning of a dead deer and the smell from it but luckily i didnt see or smell the deer when i was there... seen lots of live deer... wanda texas
  6. wweellll i started with a butt pack but it became too small....so i was using a backpack for awhile....then i found a smaller bag/carrier...i dont know what its called but its main compartmant is square and the strap is as wide as it then tapers off at a slight angle for the strap that goes all the way around my shoulder...it cost 20. and leather bought it in laughlin nevada on a trip there...very nice ..multiple compartaments... big main i carry my walkie talkies batteries pens safety goggles and gps....other slightly smaller compartment is a ziploc filled with various assortment of swag to keep it all together and i can just pull out he ziploc and see what ive got to trade...smaller compartment i have my wooden coins in a ziploc...and in the cigarette/cellphone pocket i have a whistle... i leave one walkie talkie and cell phone in the car with my "blocker" (mom and dad) since they cant do most of the hikes in the woods due to strenous/difficult terrain/climbing etc so they stay in the car or out on a park bench and we keep in contact with each other and they have the cell phone to use if i get into trouble... hey i got turned around in the woods one time and was completely turned around and sort of lost...i saw someone go up the side of the ravine with a dog and figured he might know where he was going...wound up in a huge field...called on he walkie and toldthem to honk the horn...heard nothing....then i could see a road...hhhmmm ..so i called again ad said is a blue car goin by you...a white suv...a truck etc and they said yes...so i knew to head to that road... i guess the backtrack feature is supposed to be activated BEFORE you start the hunt????.... and this thing hangs nicely in the front of me and doesnt get caught too much on things....hey i had a tree reach out and snatch my bottle of soda out of my jacket pocket...and that tree must have been a pro because i never felt it take it!!!!!!! wanda texas
  7. the only thing affecting my geocaching right now is the HEAT....!!!!!...i wear jeans long sleeve shirt and boots when i go into the woods..and id die or at least feel like it in this 100 degrees....so i am hitting easy to get to mostly micros so i can wear shorts tank and sandals.... gas prices will come down after summer like it does every year...they always seem to jack up the prices around major travel times.... but of course around here they do the same with water prices in the summmer....they say conserve conserve conserve, water level in aquafer is down..so everyone conserves then the next bills the water rates are raised because now the company isnt making money on you with conserving...you cant win... and as far as suv vs cars...my mother will not ride in a car...only a large vehicle...she feels safer... i would walk to caches if i could but none are really close enough to do that...the two i have walked to have been found obviously by me and thats it...no more nearby without driving a few miles to...... so when the "peak travel times" passes by i am sure the gas prices will come down.... and my opinion on gas:....had we still been able to dig and pump our own oil here in the states like what was going on in the 80s then im sure the gas prices wouldnt be so high.... now someone mentioned hydrogen cars...those are the cars that run on water right??....well theyll just jack up the price of water to fill it up... so you cant win... oh weellllllllll wanda texas
  8. that is funny kit fox!!!!!...i like that story..... wanda texas
  9. before i started geocaching i was trying my hand at letterboxing...same concept , no gps, nothing to trade, just stamping in and out of logs..... not many of those in my area....so i hid some of my own....one i did as a theme to leave homemade bookmarks and take one of mine...put it in a big plasic container...wired together twigs to use as a covering...hid it in the weeds under a tree covered...well it disappeared but i did find lots of golfballs nearby...so maybe someone from the golf course came across it... then i hid one in a park where i had been hunting a cache..found a great spot behind a short rock wall down a steep hill....made me up a container...put it behind the wall...collected up several large rocks to cover it up and extras...and when i went back to the park to check on it i found it had just been tossed back behind the wall no attempt to cover it....so i covered it back up..but it eventually disappeared too.... now i have one left at a rest stop in a pompus plant and i know it gets replaced in different areas under the bush even by myself when ive checked on it...i just tell people to poke their sticks all around till you hear it hit plastic..i was told this one by someone that it was gone so i went to check on it and found it after 2 pokes in the vacinity....6 paces versus 4 paces from the directions... but i always covered up both letterboxes and geocaches better than when i found it ..ive come across plenty just sitting there ..or just covered with one stick whereas it had been covered with all 6 laying nearby... wanda texas
  10. well lets ssseeeee....my wardrobe keeps changing.....i started with just some holey jeans sweatshirts (and still i got my arms ripped open) tennis shoes.....and sometimes a tshirt with a jacket of some type.....now ive been wearing an old pair of jeans that are large for me and i had to add about 4 inches of denim to the bottoms..and a long sleeve denim shirt (it was cheap) and tennis shoes..i also carry some clear safety glasses since i have been scratched and poked too many times areound the eye regions......and the large jeans will fit over whatever im wearing at the time but boy do i sweat!!!!! my ideal outfit depending on the cost would be one of those jumpsuits the old guys wear and duct tape the legs and wrists and neck OUCH to keep out the ticks and bugs.....with a pair of stretchy bike shorts and stretch spaghetti strap shirt under it....but the bugs are smart and no doubt will find an opening....and i know youre supposed to wear a hat but if no one is near me how do i see the bugs on it??{;(} [;(] i havent been able to do more than a couple of park and grab micros or just one "in the woods" cache with it being in the 90s here now.... wanda texas
  11. hi i have read up on what to do wih a TB....now i will explain how i interrupted it..... i go to cache A and inside is a TB so i take the TB and then log the find for cache A and put into the log---i took TB whats=its-name and a nice cache blah bla blah.... then i think there is a place here that i then input the number from the TB tag...... then i find a cache big enought for the TB and then place TB into cache B and then log the find and say i dropped off TB whats-its-name and nice cache blah blah blah..... then i am finsished with that TB....am i correct in this???...anything else i have to go????....i am going to pick one up in about 3 days from a TB hotel that wants to go to wyoming....and i can get it into texas farther.... thanks wanda texas
  12. thanks all for the help everyone... i was getting ssoooo frustrated with this thing...i couldnt find anything..i even went to find a cache i had previously had found without a gps...but the cache was gone...ssooooo even more frustration.... soooo i hopped into my car...drove down the road to the grocery store...no trees there....parked...wrote down the coordinates...then drove back down the road the other way....parked..put in the coordinates...said "go to"...didnt exactly follow the arrow since it pointed down the wrong way...but as i kept going correctly it straightened into the right direction...followed it back to the grocery store and parked about 3 spaces away and followed the gps to the spot and it read 6ft...i had found my first "cache"...guess the gps was working after all... ssooo...now i have found 4 caches with the gps...all in open type areas...very little tree coverage..i have tried one with lots of tree coverage and all ive gotten out of that is shedding my blood....;(..... and i used another suggestion to "think like a hider"...and so far ive found some really unique containers that i wouldnt have thought was a container.... so i guess i am on my way to becoming a geocacher after all .. thanks everyone.... wanda texas
  13. i do both...i didnt have a gps unit until recently and relied on the clues for geocaches...i have found several letterboxes and have planted about 3 so far...one has since been taken/lost....and i thought that stamp turned out good..there are not alot of letterboxes in my area... as far as the stamps are concerned...people utilize both hand carved and store bought...me??..i use both..my hand carved dont always turn out good and the one that turned out rreeaallllyyyyy nice is the one that is missing...so i also buy store bought if i want a theme stamp....like say an indian headdress for comanche park... they are both fun...and some of the stamps ive found are quite impressive on how they are carved.. i have about 3 more letterboxes to plant....all hand carved..now just to find the spots...;o wanda texas
  14. thanks for that quick reply... one more question then...will the "straight line to destination" show zero when i reach the destination?? the sample pic in the manual shows the arrow page at the bottom it says "arriving destination" but at the top it says 177 feet... the sample pic says it will show that when u are within 15 seconds of reaching the destination... so does that mean that within 15 seconds at the pace you were going you can cover 177 feet to get to the destination and so the feet will read zero when u actually reach the place??? wanda texas
  15. i have taken the plunge..i bought me a yellow etrex... i have spent the last 2 days looking for a geocache..its a 2 star difficulty....and lots and lots of sticker bushes and sharp yucca plants anywhoooooo...i put in the waypoint and followed the compass page with the arrow.... now....it says "time to destination" and it could say 02:35 to go.....now i am taking that as 2 minutes and 35 seconds...am i correct??? then above that it could say 69.3 ft "straight line to the destination"....means 69 feet 3 inches.... ok...now when i was looking for that cache it was showing in "time to reach destination" it was showing 00:40...i take it i was 40 seconds away from the cache?? but then at the same time when it was showng the 40 seconds it could be showing a large number still in the "straight line to the destination" like say 120.... so my question is was i 40 seconds away from the cache which means i was right next to it....or was i still 120 feet away from it??? still trying to figure this thing out before i shed any more blood..heheehe thanks wanda texas
  16. thanks for asking about the cobra gps units margaret.... i saw them on sale today ..for tomorrow...and was wondering about them...they are cheaper than the yellow etrex..... but what ive heard so far i will stick with trying to get the yellow etrex.... off to target tomorrow to fight the people for the yellow etrex AND free video that comes with it....hhhmmmm???...free video???...last year it was on sale for 80. with no video...now its 88. with a free video.... thanks for the info everyone wanda texas
  17. i have WEBTV....a box...a keyboard...a t.v.....nothing else..
  18. i see target has the etrex on sale tomoorow for 80... i have read good things on it as to get started with them.... questions...... ----can u use one WITHOUT a computer??..i do not have a computer... -----i believe the packaging said something to the effect 500 waypoints and one route can be stored??...what does that mean??? ----can i put in the longitude lattitudes by hand to find caches??..and will i have to put each one in by hand after deleting the previous one???.... -----one more repeated question (no doubt)..if i took a trip from say texas to arizona and put in the longitude and lattitude for destination would it take me straight to the spot with all the twists and turns...(just a curious question on this one--probably not since it is on the low end of bells and whistles) questions questions questions!!!!! thanks for ur help.....i must go dig out my armor to fight the crazed people at target tomorrow ....... wanda texas HAPPY GOBBLE GOBBLE DAY
  19. quote:Originally posted by Iwuzere:How vital is it to give accurate coordinates? Can a cache be placed with approximate lat/long from a map, with good directions given in the notes - the directions would get you to within the same sort of distance as normal GPS accuracy would? At the moment there is only one cache on the island where I live, and the only way to attract more players here is to place more caches. However, I don't have a GPSr and it's a Catch 22 because I'm not going to invest in one unless it all takes off! Can I do this, or would I have to go my own way with my own website instead? Obviously, as soon as someone _with_ a GPSr finds the cache, they can supply the precise coordinates - so there's not much lost in the long run. Any thoughts? Thanks you could always try LETTERBOXING...its similar to geocaching....but no trading...see about it at http://letterboxing.wesgarrison.us ****notice there is NOT www. in the url i have found a couple of geocaches without a gps and waiting for cooler weather for a few more to find since i will need protection from the thorns and such....and a jackets and jeans in 100 degree would make a very deep sweat puddle to wade thru i have planted one letterbox and have another ready to hide....i do not have a gps so i can onl hide letterboxes....i attempt to find geocaches.... wanda

(US funds only) [This message was edited by Dave_W6DPS on June 12, 2003 at 09:35 PM.] yes those look similar to the one i saw...much more expensive tho ;(.....i had never seen a digital compass before....cool!!!!

  22. today in the automotive sections at sears i came across a digital compass and it had 325 degrees (as an example) under the NW (as example) on the sample..my guess is that the 325 degrees is for the rotation on a compass...it has suctions cups to adhere to your windsheild... anyone else see one of these??....i wonder if i hold this in my hands instead that it would work like a compass but take all the guess work out of it since its all digital.... i know its nothing since GPS units have this type stuff in it but for letterboxers it would be great since some of the hints tell you to go NE at 45 degrees.... just curious.... wanda texas
  23. so cool looking... i do forsee one problem tho...people who like to chuck rocks as they walk.... hhhmmmm....oops there goes the cache over the cliff wanda quote:Originally posted by Rothstafari:Groundspeak is pleased to announce the addition of a new Shop Groundspeak Product: Micro Cache Stones We have been working on these for quite some time and think they are way cool.
