  1. How do I go about posting a picture on this forum.
  2. It's not really a big deal. I use a stat compiler on my profile and it always shows the wrong cache as my 1st. I thought if there was an easy fix I would do it just to make may stats more accurate. I thought about backdating the cache 1 day so the Found PQ would show up correct, but decided against it. I did edit the log to the correct dates again to see if by chance it would swith the 2 but no go. Thanks for the reply. Again, it's not a big deal.
  3. My 1st found cache is listed as #2 and my #2 cache is listed as my first cache. Is there a way to correct this in my stasts?
  4. I'm wondering how most people use their GPSr. I started to get curious after I placed a cache and instead of taking a coord reading directly from the GPSr, I marked the spot as a waypoint and then put the cross hairs of my Explorist 500 over the icon and used that as a coord reading for publishing my cache. The first few finders of the cache noted the coords were off so I rechecked them (this time strictly by the setting that shows the coords on my GPSr. The result was about 60 feet from the original and wrong mark. This experience let me to wonder how all of you use your GPSr on a search. I use "shooting star" icon for caches I have not yet found when I load them into my GPSr from GCSAK. I then walk around until I'm standing where the icon is and begin looking. Most of the time I'm successful with this method but not always. Do many people swith to a coords view while looking for the cache? I have tried this with some success, but find it very confusing trying to line up north and west numbers. Is there a trick to doing this? Thank you
  5. I picked up a TB in a cache in NY. It's mission is to travel to all 50 states. In 3 weeks I will be traveling to Boston on a bus excursion for a whale watch. The TB has not yet visited Mass., so I would like to take it with me. The problem is, because this is a guided bus trip it is unlikely that I will be able to place the TB in a cache. Does simply bringing the TB to Mass. with me and maybe taking a picture with it in that state then bringing it home to a cache in NY count? How would I log this? BTW...I will check Geocaching.com to see if there are any caches that are close enough to get to, but I don't know if it's possible.
  6. I went back to the cache site with a thought of possibly moving the cache and found that the area was not as bad as I thought. Fishermen have been around the site and a lot of the growth seems to be knocked down. I cleaned up a few suspisious plants and decided to let the cache stay where it is. I have searched for caches in areas a lot worse than this one. I think geocachers should be sauve enough to dress properly for the situations they my face or take appropriate precautions. If all things were risk free, life would be a bore.
  7. Great information. I just asked about including photos in GSAK right before checking your post. It works great. Thank you.
  8. Can I add a link to Google's Picsa picture website from GSAK? I would like to be able to view my online picture gallery from a link in GSAK.
  9. I'm curious if people have a special way to "save" found caches. When I return from a days caching I like to print out a "printer friendly" copy of the cache page. I always take a few digital pics of each cache I find, so I pick the one I think represents the cash best and print out a copy of it. I take my cache page and right the date I found the cache, the #of the find and who was with me on the hunt. I put the page, pic and any swag I traded for (I always take small items that best represent the cache best) in a zip lock. I also like to upload all the pics I take into a folder with the name of the cache and send it to Google's Picsa site. I keep the pics privite because they contain spoilers. Then if I want to show people the fun of geocaching I can easily show them the pics from any computer.
  10. Hey...EScout thanks but you don't need to post that description. I figured out myself I guess even a blind dog finds a bone once in a while. I like it. I think I'll give it a try for a while. Thanks again to all for the help.
  11. Thank you all for the advise. I guess I'll leave it and hope that the cachers practice good caching sense and protect themselves when entering wooded areas. I always keep a light jacket and worm up pants along with gloves in the back of my truck.
  12. When you say place it in the main POI folder or subfolder, do you mean in MY POI's? Also, I've never used smart tags before but would like to try what you said. How do I go about doing this? Can it be done to all the files at once, or do they have to be individually edited. Talk to me like I'm a complete idiot so I will understand what to do So far I filtered my GSAK caches to show all the ones I have not found and saved them into a .upt file and dragged them into my Explorist MY POI folder. They show up fine on the screen. I would loke to modify this to show the info. you said could be displayed with tags. Thanks
  13. Yes, it works. The waypoints don't have the 200 limit. They also don't have the custom geocache icons. Worth it? Depends on your preferences. I prefer to use multiple 200 cache files and switch between them as I travel, keeping the geocaching functions. (hints, icons, marking as found, etc.). Others prefer the larger file. Thanks for the reply. I think I'll give it a try. Maybe have both on the unit. What's the best way to get them into the Explorist? I use GSAK. Can they be loaded from there?

  15. I know we can only enter 200 geocaches in each file on the Explorist 500, but I was wondering if a work around to that limit could be by entering the caches as waypoints? Has anyone tried this and does it work? Is it more trouble than it's worth?
  16. Whe on the travel Bug page there is an option to Recalculating Distance. What is this and when do you use it?
  17. I hid a cache recently that seems to be well liked. It's hidden in a location that is easy to get to and offers a pretty view of a river and a place for the cacher to fish. A few of the logs commented on the wildlife they saw while at the site. A recent log noted there was a lot of poison ivy growing around and near the container. I immediately revised the cache page to state a warning about the poison ivy and suggested long sleeves and gloves when hunting for the cache. I thought about moving the container to an area very close by, but the site is unique in that there is very limited places to hide even a small container. What thoughts do you have about this? Is it OK to leave a cache in a known area with poison plants (many caches are located in the woods where people can come in contact with the plants), or should the site be abandoned? Is the warning appropriate? Link to the cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...f5-e44cd672d8be
  18. All the responses are great. I finally saw my 1st one today. It was listed as a drop off in one of my caches last night, so I shot over there today to retrieve it. You guys are right. They are really unique and just feel good. Unfortunatly for me, the geocoin is a trackable and I will turn it loose soon. I see how you can get hooked on them. Mike
  19. Sounds good Deafhunt. I was thinking of doing one for my Deaf friends.
  20. Thank you for your replies. Yes, I think they are very nice and I may buy some myself.
  21. I guess I'm just a dumb old man, but I seem to be missing a big point to Geocoins. What are they exactly for? I see people buying and selling them. I see people putting them in caches. People collect them also. What are you supposed to do with them? They are really beautiful and very cool, but they also seem kind of expensive to just pop in a cache if you plan to release many of them. Why would you not use a travel bug instead. Please let me know so I can have a good excuse to get some. Thank you.
  22. I have a mission that I want to give to a TB that involves visiting cities with sister cities, states and countries with the same name. My question is this: In my area there are a few cities like this. For example there is a Mexico, Texas and Phoenix near here that are not the more well known ones. What would be the proper way to log these sites for the TB. Is it ok to take them myself and "dip" them in the cache then remove them and log them? With a container that is too small for a TB, can i just go to the site and retrieve the container and log the TB in and out. Also, if this ok to do, what is the correct way to log a TB in and out at the same time. Do I simply log it in and the relog it to log it out. Sorry if this question is a bit cryptic, but I would like to take advantage of the local cities befor sending it on it's way out of town. Thank You, Mike
