  1. CHUY! thanks for your response, by the way I loved the Iron Giant...it made me cry, and I was like 30 years old at the time. Stay gold pony-boy
  2. I actually stumbled upon a cache whilst metal detecting--thought it was really nifty...........
  3. c'mon y'all, what is the must have add-on software fro use with your gps? freeware, etc. I bought google earth plus becasue it says it has connectivity of some kind with garmin and magellan units... don't know exactly what kind of connectivity but I'll let you know when my gpsr arrives
  4. my buddy and I are metal detecting fools. I got a "treasure book" with gps coordinates and we went to one today--- however when we got in my car and i told him the coordinates and he said he could NOT manually input long/lat data on his magellan 400...is this correct???? by the way, I bought a garmin vista cx-- his magellans joystick is atrocious. it's lame
  5. It would be true with 1 meg or 2 gigs. If you load one map, then the other, the second will overly the first. If you load both at the same time, both will load to your unit and you can switch between them as needed. thanks briansnat! how about a follow up question: I just purchased google earth plus for $20. is there faqs out there to help me integrate this in use with my v cx? are there cool lil freeware programs I wanna obtain?
  6. get, and bring, a metal detector...do a little coin shooting while you're there!
  7. One tip is to learn the shortcuts to frequently used things (just got my Vista a few weeks ago and love it). Pressing the zoom in / out buttons on the satellite screen changes contrast. This is good since the satellite screen is the first one to come up, and you will want to change the contrast for the lighting you are currently in. On the compass screen (called Navigate IIRC), pressing and holding the page button will toggle the electonic compass on and off. It's nice to leave off while you are able to move at a good clip (thereby saving batteries), and turning it on when getting closer to the cache, so it will point towards the cache even while you stop and check out the surroundings. And very important, something I just figured out today when I was sure there must be a way to do it: press and hold the joystick switch to mark your current location. Until today (about 3 weeks or so), I've been going to the main menu, then selecting mark. This is a lot easier. thanks fo all the good tips!
  8. someone on these forums told me that my vista, which is somewhere between here and Amazon does not autoroute. I could swear it does. also I bought a 2gb microsd card; someone said I have to add topo and street at the same time...is this true..even with 2 gb, am I linited in what can be retrieved? and does the 2gb card work inthis thing??? sandisk, btw. Am I outta control or what? no more coffee tonight. it seems like geocaching is a good mate to metal detecting, which is a hobby of mine thx
  9. wait a second, I could swear I saw the the vista cx is autoroute capable!!! that was one of the reasons I purchased it. i also bought a 2 gb microsd card for it
  10. hi, amazon has sent me my Garmin vista (any links to hints on how to use it) and now I'd like to purchase some maps. I have a few questions does the city nt map overlay the topo map if both are installed? do you select one or the other I've read that the Garmin Mapsource US CD-Rom Topo maps DO NOT have unlock codes, so is this truly a safe buy used/ebay/ thanks? one last thing, I see these "geocoins" -- if we find them at a cache can we take them???? and is there a way to comment as a cache finder anywhere???thx and happy hunting
