  1. Personally, I would like to see cache adoption stopped.

I have a slightly different take on this issue.

Please see my log at: http://coord.info/GC15GZX

The CO passed away last year. I found both caches she hid, and although I only met her once, I became a police officer in the town she was from, and have grown quite close to the friends and family she left behind.

After posting the log, I went to the VFW where all the ladies she knew were in tears... and her husband was there. One of the ladies received the facebook alert on my status, and they all knew about it before I got there.

The bartender came up to me and told me I *HAD* to tell her husband. So I went and sat with him and told him all about it. He knew of one of the caches his wife hid, but didn't know about the other. After explaining the condition of the caches, and expressing my willingness to provide the much needed maintenance, he told me she would want me to adopt her caches.

So.... how do I go about doing that?

  3. In the summer of 2002, I had to go to Fort Hood for annual training with my National Guard unit. I'm in a mechanized infantry unit, meaning, we are still infantry soldiers, but we have tracked vehicles... more specifically, the Bradley tank (M2 IFV/CFV). Well, there are Bradley crews, and there are dismount soldiers. The crew consists of a driver, a gunner, and a "BC" or Bradley Commander. The dismounts are the infantry soldiers who ride in the Bradley until enemy troops are encountered, then the dismounts get off and go fight.

I was a dismount soldier. I think the Bradley is a piece of crap, and I'd never want to be "stuck" on one in combat. The thing is, our unit was going to be mobilized. We didn't know what kind of mission we were getting, so the main focus of the battalion was to get all of the Bradley crews qualified. This meant catering to their every needs regarding going to the range.

The dismounts were dumped off in the woods, and pretty much left to fend for themselves. I was in that group. About 300 meters from where we were camped was the battalion area. We'd go there sometimes for supplies and see the battalion staff sipping on gatorades and eating chips while all we got was water and MREs. There was plenty in the battalion area, but those guys wouldn't share at all.

Anyone who has spent any time at Ft. Hood in the summer will tell you it's miserably hot. We didn't even have tents to sleep in.

A few days in to AT (annual training), we were doing a land navigation training. One of the corporals in my unit had recently come off active duty, and was telling us about the "pluggers" that the regular Army uses.

The next day, we got a ride to South Fort Hood where the active duty section is to make a PX run. The PX is like a military Wal-Mart where soldiers can buy stuff at Wal-Mart prices, but don't have to pay sales tax. I was browsing in the electronics section, and saw the Garmin eTrex normal retail for $119, but was on sale for $99. I snatched it. When the duece and a half (big army truck) dropped us off back at the Battalion area, I marked another company's supply tent as a waypoint. We walked back to our camping area, and I got a couple of lower enlisted guys together and we formulated a plan.

Because of the ethics of "reappropriating" property, we couldn't let our platoon sgt in on our scheme. That night, we (me and the two privates) slept in shifts until 3am. We followed the GPS back to the battalion area with night vision goggles and no flashlights to avoid detection. We commandeered two coolers full of gatorade, a tarp that is used to cover a Bradley, some 550 cord (parachute cord commonly used as rope by military personnel), and some other goodies. We followed the tracks back to our campsite, and when everyone woke up at 5am, all that stuff was magically there. The platoon sgt was smart enough to only ask what all was there instead of where it came from.

Later that day, we made a large tent with the tarp, and we had gatorade, chips, cookies, and other "pogie bait". We would make a run every four days or so to restock, and found that they had posted a guard. Fortunately, the noise from the generators drowned out any noise we made, and the guard not having night vision couldn't see us. Going there, we were within 15 feet of the guard, and he never knew we walked by him.

Please allow me to explain something. Battalion funds were used to buy all of that stuff. The Battalion leaders wanted to "make sure there was plenty for the Bradley crews", and that's why they didn't give us dismounts any. There's a difference between theft and reappropriation.

Before I knew about geocaching, I found one of the biggest caches there have ever been.

Took: a bunch of stuff to make our training more tolerable

    Left: nothing except humiliated guards

I found out about geocaching on Radi0chik's website who I met when I became a ham radio operator.

...but I'm curious... I saw the movie "Witness", with Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis. Her being Amish wouldn't even allow the police (Ford) to possess his gun while in the Amish compound. I take it you really aren't Amish?

  7. Exactly how many emails in the past have you ever gotten from Microsoft? You haven't?? That's because Microsoft doesn't send out emails, ESPECIALLY attachments.

Never ever ever ever open an attachment that claims to be a virus patch or fix.... go to a reputable website and download it (which is what the reputable virus scanners will tell you to do...)

  8. Officially, I'm unemployed. I do computer work. I'm also a pyrotechnician, so I get to travel sometimes. I like doing pyrotechnics, and would like to do it more often. That's how I got my Albuquerque, Las Vegas, and Wichita Falls caches here recently.

I'm also a Vol. fireman and a student. I cache round the clock. I've been picking up a lot of night caches here lately.

I don't know that I'll ever list my caches on the "other site". I have considered listing other peoples' caches on the other site though icon_smile.gif

Gee, Brian, I don't know. I don't see any of them posting here, and I'm pretty sure they've seen the thread. I'd rather play ignorant and ask, then to assume that they are passive aggressive like that.

When I started the thread, it was right after finding a cache that was listed on this site and the other site simultaneously. It was archived on this site, but still had finds on the other site, and I wanted to make sure that it wasn't archived here BECAUSE it was listed on the other site.

Next, write the cache name (and number for geocaching.com lookup??), date of creation/visit, and name. Leave plenty of room on the back. Maybe even divide the back into sections.

The next person to visit the cache would pick up the card (as well as their trade of any items), fill in their name, home city/state/country, and date. When that person visits the next cache, write the name of the cache and date in their section and leave it.

The last person to find the card and fills out the information with their name and info, would then drop it in the mail.

Hopefully the recipient could scan in the postcard and post it somewhere on the web.

At the very least, for those getting their kids involved with them on the geocache hunts, it'd be a great fun to see where their post cards travelled. icon_smile.gif

I've thought about doing something similar with a TB. I was thinking about attaching a TB to a baggie with a camera and a spiral notebook, then see how long it would take to go somewhere and come back to me. I couldn't figure out how to make it work, though. Maybe if I asked each person to drop a pic in the baggie with the notebook, I could see how many pictures I'd collect before getting it back.

I don't know... it seems there are a lot of variations to how one could go about doing this... but it seems neat if there could be a moving cache attached to a TB...

Normally, I'd agree. I've felt that way about Macincraps compared to PCs, but there's obviously a market for Macincraps because they are still in business and people are still buying them.

Now, there's the big battle between Microsoft and Linux. There used to be no market for Linux, and now, businesses who used to run Microsoft are migrating to Linux. I'm not saying this'll happen with gc.com (and I hope it doesn't), as a software developer using the Microsoft platform, my target customer base has to be Microsoft users. I can't write for Linux users.

We can't just ignore the other cache sites and expect them to go away. I think efforts should be made early on to develop a common interface so that no one loses out.... even the users of gc.com.

I'm thinking about this on a little broader scale than just cache find counts. What happens if a TB or any other kind of "traveller" is dropped off in a nc cache? There aren't many nc caches close to me, but if there were, I can't say that I wouldn't try and find/log them. While I like gc.com, and here is where my loyalty lies, I also like caching.

Right now, gc.com is the big fish in the pond, but who knows if it'll stay that way? If new caches are going to be listed elsewhere, wouldn't it better serve gc.com if they worked together with the other cache sites?

I'm now straying off topic, as I was just wondering if it was "OK" to list the same cache on another site, but this thread is bringing up some interesting questions and points. I wonder if they've ever been (publicly) addressed?

I wouldn't mind it a bit if gc.com made everybody happy, and this was the only cache site out there.

Ok, so now I know that it's happening. But it leads me to wonder if doing so hurts gc.com? I mean, I'm all for competition, but the service gc.com offers has not cost me one dime. I will always be loyal to gc.com no matter how bad hydee abuses me, but I wouldn't mind helping out another caching site.

How does gc.com feel about it officially? I hate that people leave gc.com because of stringent rules, because either I have to go there to find more caches, or I simply miss out on them. It's kinda like which IM client to choose... AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, etc... and then, someone was industrious enough to write Trillian where I could have a central interface for all services. I don't see that possibility with cache listings/cache logs due to the fact that there's data storage and data access involved. gc.com and (the other site) both have proprietary data with only their interface for finding/listing/logging caches. The other cache sites users are missing out on my cache because I only have it listed here. I would like to list my cache on the other site, not to hurt gc.com, but to get more exposure to my cache.

...but I certainly won't do it without gc's blessing... I drink the Koolaid, remember? icon_smile.gif

So you're saying you would list the same cache on other sites that you've already listed here? Or you wouldn't?

I found a cache that was listed on gc.com and nc, but it's archived on gc.com. I wonder why?

If I can't sign the log book, I'll not log in on the site (but that's just me), like a cache that I found in Vegas had run out of room (while nicely placed, I thought it was a cheezy cache anyhow). I could see the difficulty in tracking the hits of a cache if it were listed on multiple sites.

I wonder how "safe" the data is at Groundspeak? I'm sure there is redundancy and such (it's probably on SQL server), since it's a commercial venture. My loyalty lies with gc.com. That's why I'm asking about listing with other sites.
