  1. Not to complicate things but I found this thread lastnight: So the LB Hybrid requirements appears to have changed in Feb. of this year. However the official description based on the text above is not as concise or clear like the text above that it is based upon. This is where that "Institutional Knowledge" I've been talking about kicks in. As I'm sure most of those around to witness and review these changes as they happened had insight from previous discussions and posts here in the forums and elsewhere. So the final text was clear to them. This is where technical writers and others not involved with the development of said guidelines should be used to review final text to insure clarity for the "layperson".
  2. This is why I love having a Jeep at times. No doors or top. Keep nothing inside.
  3. You know what the intent is because you joined this forum about a year after the very first geocache was placed. You have had the oppertunity to watch the sport grow, change and develope practically from its infancy, so you have unique insight into the intent of the language of the guideline because you witnessed the history. So it should be clear to you. However the "integral part" phrase of the guideline I took to mean that the listed coordinates will get you in the general vacinity of the cache but to find the cache you'll need to read the clues given and apply them to the environment when you arrive at the listed coordinates. Thus meeting use of the GPS guideline. I then looked at published geocaches in my area to see if this interpretation was correct, and that cache did seem to confirm that interpretation. The listed cache I reviewed gave coords to the place to park then you needed to follow the clues from the parking location to find the cache. So I modeled my submission after this, which seemed reasonable and I didnt expect problems since I was using an already tested model (there aren't many hybrids out there to compare against). Thank you for doing so; this seems to be a type of cache that is relatively unused and I think the lack of a clear and concise rules of "must do" contributes to it's lack of use.
  4. There should be a Supreme Tribunal of Reviewers, that interpret the guidelines as set forth by GC.com to which all other lower reviewers must interpret cache submissions based upon the Supreme Tribunal interpretation. Of course then we must develop an appeals process for cache submissions.!!!!
  5. On this note, met my first geocacher yesterday, jimwall2. Placing a geocache near your home is a very tricky way to meet geocachers. If you place it, they will come.
  6. I appreciate everyone helping me to understand what the GC.com description of a "Letterbox Hybrid" is seeking. While the description appears clear to some the description is actually vague to a newbie cacher such as myself, however the veteran cacher as most reviewers/moderators are they have the "institutional knowledge" (background history) to understand the intent of the language. Even though I reviewed a local hybrid to make sure my submission would be trouble free. Lastnight, I withdrew my submission for a couple reasons: 1. I thought I was submitting the cache for a different type of hunt than what I was actually getting. 2. Since the cache wasn't what I had envisioned, the cache was seemed very unmemorable and uncreative. Vanilla. I will re-submit the cache with a new name probably as a Multi-Cache but it will take time for me to figure out how to twist the hunt itself. In my own view geocaching is about the hunt not the loot at the end of the hunt. I'm generally not interested in Geocoins or TB's except to help their owners attain their goals, which I love helping them do. I don't really do things for the Icons in my profile either. So there was no 'bad blood' I sent a note to my reviewer after they noticed I had archived the submission. I was a bit frustrated by this whole process as my expectations of a different type of hunt were not met. I am sure the reviewer was frustrated with dealing with me because I was not understanding what they were saying; partly because of them having to break my paradigm of what I understood to be true. I doubt I will be listing any caches as LB hybrids even if they contain a rubber stamp. However, I may still crosspost them at AtlasQuest/Letterboxing North America with clues only just in case those folks want something to do as well. I'd also like to thank EVERYONE in this thread for helping me figure this stuff out. I believe I'm reasonably intelligent, the cache description didn't click with me. If description were simplified to something like "Is a traditional or multicache that includes a rubber stamp in the cache and is crossposted at a letterboxing website as well." Would probably be much more concise and clear to the uninitiated, and would go a long way to settle discussions in the forums as well. I tend to agree with others that Letterbox Hybrid should be reduced to a cache attribute rather than be its own category as it technically does nothing to change the journey (hunt) to the cache. I know this will not happen and surely if it did; probably not in the near future.
  7. This is a bit off topic but one that I've read reviewers and others in the chatroom repeat often. That the reviewers are way over worked and are very busy people. Why doesn't GC add more reviewers? It seems most of the reviewers are volunteers so its shouldn't cost GC any duckets to do so. I'd be surprised if there weren't any veterans cachers around that wouldn't mind lending a helping hand.
  8. I don't know what to say... I figure the reviewer would review the cache description again and make the appropriate remarks as necessary. At the dinner table when someone asks for the mashed potatoes a common response as the the taters are passed is "there you go". Around here it is a fairly common response when you give someone what they asked for. I am quite sure that my reviewer is or has read this thread. I've decided to retract this submission at this point the cache is nothing of what I wanted it to be which is really quite sad as there are no caches in this area. I'll probably relist the cache as a different type with a different name maybe figure out some other twist.
  9. You should have been able to just follow your tracks back (the dotted line that trails behind your arrow) to get back to where you came from. Congrats and Welcome to the Addiction.
  10. So I did as the reviewer asks, place a wp1 micro-cache with the final coords in it, update description of the cache to reflect the change. The reviewer not only doesnt list it but unlists it from the que and doesn't tell me why; except see my previous log. Is this standard behavior of a reviewer? I've only listed a couple of caches before and never had such responses from a reviewer.
  11. It is pointless since the cache would be better descried as "Regular" or "Multi" that that cross listed, instead of Letterbox since the hunt has nothing to do with the letterbox style of a hunt. I guess this is why there are only 4 within 50 miles of my home coords.
  12. I just added a micro with the final coords at the starting coords for those that just want to log a find as quickly as possible. Just seems to defeat the purpose is all.
  13. Guess the point of category escapes me then as it really does nothing to affect gameplay except add an inkpad and stamp. Whoopie.
  14. guess then this kills another idea I had for a different kind of cache, where you'd need a compass to complete and no coordinates except the starting point. Basically a Multi-cache that only confirms your compass work at each waypoint, confirming you are on track/where you are at, and where you have to go from there.
  15. Is a letterbox Hybrid just a traditional cache with a rubber stamp in it and listed at the ? And/Or is a letterbox hybrid a multi-cache with a rubberstamp in it? So after reading the description of a letterbox and finding an example in my area. I tried submitting a Letterbox Hybrid modeled after an approved one in my area. However the reviewer keeps kicking it back stating, that I must: Basically the description given by the reviewer is a traditional or multi-cache type geogache. The only thing that appears to make the letterbox hybrid stand-out is that it contains a rubber stamp and cross-posted on another site (which isn't even required). So what is the point of the Letterbox Hybrid if the category is played the same as a traditional cache or multi-cache category type? And if I did cross post this on another site with all these other containers with coordinates in them how are the letterbox people supposed to find the box when they don't use GPS's?
  16. Okay well you guys took that a little too seriously. Who uses "Jibber Jabber" seriously?
  17. This thread is nothing but a bunch of jibber jabber. It makes no sense.
  18. Fixed ROFLMAO I was not looking for a WSGA group per se. I'd probably be very unlikely to join such a group formally. I was just thinking finding and grouping with others in a sort of adhoc fashion and develop geo-friendships.
  19. Good Job Tech Guys!!! I know your pain work the same type of work.
  20. oh don't tell me they do that...
  21. A site like this, as high traffic as it is should never go down so long as the systems were built correctly. Clusters of webservers, file servers, dbservers, redundant firewalls and redundant network paths should be in place.
  22. Okay then so some people consider sig items as trade items. If I was to have some nice quality Pathtags made up, could I use those as trade items? They are kinda of spendy especially if you drop one everytime you visit a cache.
  23. That's unique, I wonder if that practice is localized etiquette? makes sense but I have never seen it. Hmmm. Very interesting.
  24. You just have to understand I have very hard time agreeing to do something; then not being able follow through. So I tend not to say 'definately' until I know for certain. Hope that makes sense...
