  1. I think safety and CO liability will be the real issues when geocaching goes hula hoop. This could lead to government regulation, but only if the gub-mint sees a way to turn a buck on it... Otherwise we could see severe restriction of the activity that would probably please some folks aesthetic sensibilities. Groundspeak's disclaimer protects Groundspeak as the facilitator of the activity on this website. (Or does it?) It doesn't protect the CO. Sooner or later there will be lawsuits by people with a lottery mentality and a lack of personal accountability. If the perfect storm situation where the young cacher in Dresden, Germany died while hunting a cache that should not have been published in an area marked as verboten had happened here in the USA we might already have an example of what I'm talking about. Maybe I'm spending too much time studying safety for my job that I see the need for more safety awareness in this activity, but I've backed wayyy off of that soapbox. This culture isn't ready for it. I come here for fun and not for work.
  2. Careful, you'll summon the snoogans and we'll get to see the same post he's been making about the "mainstream event horizon" for years. Lolz don't be jealous. Everyone can't be as visionary as me.
  3. LOL. I posted that on a cache of mine where many finders complained about ants near one of my caches and wanted ME to do something about it. I reminded future finders that the cache is outdoors. Case closed.
  4. This thread reminds me I have 2 hours of Big Bang Theory to watch on my DVR when I get home.
  5. I have a watch on it and I saw your log. I had planned to go see him again when the GPS Maze was to open in San Antonio, but it got cancelled.
  6. I'm in that camp too... The area is obviously not secure. This issues are great and the hand wringing and teeth gnashing over a cache that wouldn't even be publishable by today's guidelines is not even entertaining. This cache went the way of the dinosaur a long time ago, but people are still trying to administer CPR. The person(s) who keep doing this are pathetic and we are providing them with entertainment. Letting go at this point is a win for this community and not the slimy cache maggot(s). It's just a cache. Get over it. At some point someone will bean count this and discover it's not worth our time. Oh wait, I just did, but I didn't show my math.
  7. That. Groundspeak redefined itself with that move. Prior to this, when Groundspeak decided a part of their game wasn't working for them they did one of two things. Either they locked those objects down so no one could log any more, as they did with locationless caches, or they eliminated the option of creating more, allowing the existing ones to die a natural death, as they did with virtuals. In both those cases, we all kept our stats. I created eight challenges. The feedback was mostly positive. Folks seemed to enjoy them. I certainly enjoyed creating them and checking on them as time allowed. Now, the only proof I have of ever making these is a screen shot I snapped before they killed them. Groundspeak's decision was most foul. Exactly! Thank you!!! Yep I agree.
  8. I too am not happy about this, but I just don't have time for hand wringing and teeth gnashing over a trivial pursuit like challenges. I was just starting to really get into the challenges. I'd be more ticked if I had put more time and effort into them as some people did. I liked 'em and it's a shame they got clubbed like a baby seal and erased. They were never given a chance to mature.
  9. I've hidden 2, but with in-laws in town, I haven't taken the time to list them. One will be called, "Just Sleigh Bells & Cursing." The other one has unique seasonal camo, but I don't have a name yet. I also hosted my annual White Elephant Geocaching Event: W.E.G.E. #9 The Island of Misfit Toys.
  10. For brevity: No. My long winded sarcastic reply.... What do you mean by governing body? Like if you don't take the mark of the governing body"s sigile, pay dues, make an oath of fealty, and flagellate ourselves after every DNF, then we can't play? Sure. I'd love to have a governing body that gives no value added to our sport/hobby/activity. There is already a Geocacher's Creed that no one pays attention to so why not a governing body right? Just sayin'.
  11. Not into numbers, but I do enjoy seeing milestones. I could care less for challenge caches, but I was just starting to enjoy the photo challenges which will be erased from our memory in just shy of a week. I could care less about the star grid. I do like to find much favorited caches and caches that have good word of mouth. Those are the only caches I will go outta my way for. I would call myself a socially outgoing well rounded omnivorous opportunistic cacher. No cache is beneath hunting as long as I'm not wasting valuable time and gas to get it. I'm up for anything if a cache has rave reviews. I like attending events and hosting events and participating in online geocaching forums. I always have two dozen or more half baked geocaching projects going. I cache in some way, shape, or form, every single day. Just because my find count says 1250+ after 10 years, don't think for a minute that I'm not much of a cacher. I tend to want to cache more on trips than I do when I am at home which is reflected in my stats and has made some of the locals think, quite wrongly, that I'm mostly retired. There are 70+ fully stocked ammo cans in my garage just waiting... There are probably close to two dozen small and micro sized caches ready to go in my car, man cave, & caching bag just waiting for a good spot I can also maintain. There are a couple thousand more containers with cache potential in boxes and bins in my garage. I'm really more of a hider than a finder, but my preferred hiding zone is the Eastern Sierras which is an 1800 mile commute most of the year. If I could live there, I would probably be among the most prolific hiders. Just wait until I retire there.
  12. You are not the first person I've heard express that sentiment in the past 2 days. Word has it the last few weeks are the most miserable. That's self torture I'm not into. Flagellation sounds about as much fun. I think I'll try that first.
  13. And the Snoogans curse is still potent. Less than 24 hours after proclaiming my new love of Challenges they have gone the way of the dodo. Gah! Perhaps I will love Whybothermarks next. Seriously why don't they take that site into the woods and shoot it?
  14. Interesting take on things. It made me go through and reread the whole thread. I still don't see so much as one person defending this behavior. Could you point out what you feel are statements in defense of these miscreants? These folks are the type who bristle at everything, and deliberately seek out things to be offended at, presumably so they can feel smug. YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO GO YOUR ENTIRE LIFE NOT BEING OFFENDED. There, I said it. If that is the most important thing you have to worry about, consider your life to be blessed. Yes it's offensive; yes it's inappropriate; yes it's unpleasant and juvenile but no one is going to die or lose their soul I'm also a parent, but my child will not grow up sheltered. He won't fear or be moved to anger over something so trivial as a buncha dudes whose team spells the eff word. All the op has done is give away his power by becoming offended. Sorry. I read this several times and I'm still not seeing anyone defending miscreants. I suppose I'll have to go point by point in the hopes that you will correct the error of my ways. 1 ) These folks are the type who bristle at everything, and deliberately seek out things to be offended at, presumably so they can feel smug. Definitely not defending miscreants. Rather, it was an observation that there are whole hordes of folks out there who really, really want to be offended, and search long and hard until they find something to get offended over. This observation in no way excuses impolite behavior, nor does it defend it. 2 ) YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO GO YOUR ENTIRE LIFE NOT BEING OFFENDED. There, I said it. Definitely not defending miscreants. Rather, it was an opinion that the world does not exist to protect you, (the collective you), from being offended, if you choose to be. It is not defending impolite behavior in any way. 3 ) If that is the most important thing you have to worry about, consider your life to be blessed. Definitely not defending miscreants. Rather, it is a statement advising you, (the collective you), that a scrawled four letter word is not necessarily worth becoming stressed over. It is not defending impolite behavior in any way. 4 ) I'm also a parent, but my child will not grow up sheltered. He won't fear or be moved to anger over something so trivial as a buncha dudes whose team spells the eff word. All the op has done is give away his power by becoming offended. Definitely not defending miscreants. Rather, it is a statement advising you, (the collective you), that a scrawled four letter word is not necessarily worth becoming stressed over. It is not defending impolite behavior in any way. (Am I repeating myself? Oops!) I'll ask again, since apparently I wasn't real clear in my earlier request. You claim that folks are defending the behavior of miscreants in this thread. Can you point that out for me? Thanx! That abides. From one Dude to another, you have achieved the title of Arch Dude with that post.
  15. Yep. Been wanting to do one ever since I first saw The Onion report on it quite awhile ago. Your picture on FB made me think about it again on a bigger scale.
  16. I found the movie to be rather forgettable. Not bad. Just well, forgettable. I'm hoping the next time I drink tequila the brain cell where that memory is stored will exfoliate. I had always regretted not attending the Premier, after GW7, in favor of dinner and caching with friends which included the infamous roadside flashmob fiasco. Now that I have seen the movie, I'm very happy I made the right choice. It's seems that fictionalized geocaching stories are only interesting when there is a body count. Probably because geocaching is only interesting to other geocachers when it is a true, or very nearly true, first hand account of an actual geocaching experience. Otherwise it's about as interesting as watching golf.
  17. Personally, I don't want ANYONE editing my log books. It's MY cache. 9 Years ago a cache maggot raided one of my caches and left a note and some signature cache maggot swag. The cacher that found it took everything and I never got to see what it was all about. She thought she was helping by taking it. I certainly didn't appreciate it. My cache, my judgment. Period.
  18. Here's the old dead thread just for reference on my post. I figured the OP might appreciate the read.
  19. Ever been to a parade? I'm talking about getting a permit to block a section/block of street for 5 to 10 minutes and line the streets with excited parade watchers for a Ninja Parade. It would be a very unsuccessful Ninja Parade if people actually saw the ninjas.
  20. It's not what you say so much as how you say it.... I see why BD's post was a bit harsh. This is a good conversation when it comes around. Here is what I have had to say in the past: Now that I sometimes hide and find caches with my 4.5yo Snooglet, I find that sometimes the most mundane hides and locations can be great fun or a real challenge seen through his eyes. Make that 209 events in 10 states. I drove 8,666 mile roundtrip to attend GW8. That's my longest cachin run to date. I got almost 200 caches and attended 10 events. When I wrote the OP gas was a great deal cheaper. I don't go a long way outta my way to attend local (Texas & Houston) events anymore unless it's convenient or something really special. Cachin' event groups have become localized and in some areas a bit Balkinized and I think that is greatly due to gas prices. Okay, I finally went and found those. One of them is so good that it got a favorite point from me. Funny thing though. A friend and fellow geocacher actually hid a cache on our property (at work) and I did not become aware of it until 7 months later when one of my officers called the cops after seeing a guy stash something under a light pole base cover. It turned into one of the most interesting finds I ever had. Of course the cache is archived now. Still true, but I'll take any convenient cache just to get a fix sometimes. I'm not too picky at those times. Still do, but ya gotta use an alternate listing service to hide and find LCs and to hide Virts. Funny how virts were so derided back in the day, but most new cachers go outta their way to get them and many wish we could still list them. Well?
  21. Wow, my first thought was what a sucker post of derisive claptrap. Dang BD, ya in a mood today or what?
  22. Just for the record: every time someone brings up Virtuals and how much fun they are, someone else brings up that they've been replaced by Challenges or Waymarks. Then there's a debate about Challenges and Waymarks that eventually comes to a point where the advocates of Challenges and Waymarks complain bitterly about people thinking Challenges and Waymarks are replacements for Virtuals. Suggesting the OP look at Challenges and Waymarks is a good idea, don't get me wrong. There are certainly similarities. But through repeated debates I've learned that it is simply wrong to call either of them replacements for Virtuals. Although it's also true that Virtuals will never come back. Challenges and Whybothermarks are not a replacement for Virtuals and Locationlesses. They are not caches. Whybother? I guess some people are easily amused. Vist the local curch and log three whybothers! Why bother? Yes. There were mounting probles with Locationless and virtuals. They are gone, or grandfathered. Sorry that there was no resolution how to solve the problems. I guess that I do not miss them that badly. But I could care less about the alternatives. Okay I love love love the term Whybothermarks. Gonna use that from now on.... The whole system and my experience with utterly failed to blow my skirt up. Sorta like Notveryfunzees. It took me awhile to warm up to Challenges and while they are not technically replacements for virts and locationless caches if you choose to view it thataway they are a great innovation on the concept of both. I like 'em. I think it shows a willingness on the part of Groundspeak to try to meet customer demand to bring back virts and locationless caches. If Waymarks were combined and counted as finds, I think it would attract more users. I'm not the kind of Waymarker that would log or submit a McD's, but I did log a KFC in Corbin, Ky. Too bad the geocache was missing, I would have logged that too. The orginal KFC, WoW! There's a Swanky McD's at the gate to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC that I have been meaning to log. It has only been 4 years. Maybe I'll get a round tuit some day.
  23. Understood, but does your cache say sofa king or so f**king and do you post that online. I use SK as in That's S.K. Obvious. The by line says That's Sofa King It's obfuscation of two normal words that sound like a curse when said together... And yes, immaturity IS keeping me young. I'm also a parent, but my child will not grow up sheltered. He won't fear or be moved to anger over something so trivial as a buncha dudes whose team spells the eff word. All the op has done is give away his power by becoming offended. Screw obfuscation. (irony intended). We both know it's not allowed regardless whether or not children will explode upon hearing it. Really? Please post SBAs on my caches if you are so offended. Sofa and King are not curses. They sound like one together. Where does the censorship end when you head down that slippery slope? I know a cacher who loves hockey and was pressured by the crunchy granola hand wringers in his local caching continuum to change his geo-nick because a small minority didn't like it. The name used to be Puck Off. Sorry. I'll agree to disagree here.
