  1. If you're ou this way I would recommend it... BTW... I think I recall a 2nd EC here in the past. If I remember correctly it was archived due to "armchairing" the answers.
  2. May I ask you (and those others that are excited) why some icon or virtual reward (whatever it is called) provides you with motivation to get out and visit Earthcaches? Either one is interested into ECs or one isn't. To me this sounds like in nursery school where most children want to get a blue ribbon if one child gets one. You need not answer. There is no need to justify your excitement. I am just curious. I am aware that I used a why question, but it is ok for me if my question remains unanswered. Cezanne Perhaps if one were to view this situation say as a runner or a swimmer, things may become a bit clear. The “competition” is internal to better ones time or simply just to complete an event. Now most will have “awards” for those who place in various categories. Some events, that are designed to help with donations to certain charities, all participants may receive a T-Shirt. Most folks don’t compete for the T-Shirts, but for involvement in the event. I hope this helps… BTW... for what's worth I'm closing in on 150.
  3. I hope this works out... It's a very interesting concept.
  4. Try: http://www.nps.gov/cave/index.htm Write to Carlsbad Caverns National Park 3225 National Parks Highway Carlsbad, New Mexico 88220 E-mail Us Phone General Park Information (575) 785-2232 taken from their web site...
  5. You may also want to check w/a State Geological Survey or a Dept. of Natural Resources. They may have basic publications to use a references.
  6. 1 There is no grandfathering of older ECs. 2 Perhaps the photo is directly related to one or more of the tasks? (responses may read 'out of context' but are useful in general)
  7. Thank You... Oh well, waiting on the hockey game to be played on a football field, tonite @ 8.
  8. Please refer to Post #73. As an EarthCache owner, I review every log for my EarthCaches. If I don't receive an email from them within a few days of logging the cache, I send them a friendly reminder. I have never had to delete a log. This is not what I meant by a power trip. There are very few EarthCache owners that I would put in that category, but I have run across one or two. I never had photographs as a requirement to log any of my EarthCaches. Well keep in mind the "mugshot" as I like to call it was a requirement at least 3 years ago. It took me a while to master the outstretched arm self profile.
  9. Perhaps the perception of the “quality” of an EC may lie w/the COs background in the Earth Sciences? I am glad to see more people, in spite of their lack of an earth science background, getting involved w/the creation of ECs. ECs should promote education. There are a couple of other issues that I have run into that may cause a great or good requirement from not being listed. One would be a destructive approach say using a traditional geologic tool known as a rock hammer. The other being safety, I would hate to see someone get injured just to reach a particular location. In conclusion, I’m not convinced that local reviewers really would have anything to do w/this. I’m sure they all have the same guidelines and policy to follow.
  10. As a CO it is our responsibility to ensure the requirements are followed. Now in your view does this make us a “control freak” if they are not? If you are going to “play” any “game” you should do so by following the rules of that “game”. Just how can someone give you 100% when you only meeting 75% of the requirements. You’re sounding like a spoiled child.
  11. Post #25 I'll still incorporate earth caches into my caching because I like the wow factor of some earth caches. I'll still learn what I can from the pages. But I'm likely going to forever be leery of the cache owners and wondering how much my answers will get picked apart or if my log will get deleted because the answers weren't perfect. And I'm likely not going to be as enthusiastic about it. It went from being something really fun to something way too serious for me to really enjoy greatly anymore. I feel that the original point of this issue is that w/Ecs there is no written log and in lue of this the photo requirement filled this need. I also feel that the overall general elimination an original requirement such as the photo deminishes the quality of the EC as to validation of the posting. Now, I have never deleted a find and can accept the lack of a photo given a good reason. I also try an incorporate responses based on observation of the finder in their own words, thereby creating a situation of mulptile answers. The questions of an EC help validate an understanding of the text, the photo validates the visit while eliminating the “armchair find”. Why incorporating your GSPr into a photo is not acceptable is a bit beyond my comprehension, it works for validation in Waymarkiing. Here again the issue here is the generalize blanket elimination of the photo, which was an original requirement.
  12. I went ahead and made the photo optional in ALL of mine. I guess the smiley wins over validation?
  13. Although I too am disappointed with changes in the photographic requirement, for the sake of clarity, could someone give an example or two for the explanation below? "Exceptions to this guideline will only be considered if the requested photograph is related to an Earth Science logging activity such as recording a phenomenon."
  14. Saw the following in the quotable quotes section of the newspaper (I think it was from an American news commentator "God creates wars to teach Americans geography" I Like It.... That sounds like it should be on a college profs wall...
  15. Developing an Earthcache at age 14 wouldn't have been very difficult for me, but I live in an entirely different country than most of the people who use this forum, and it's no secret that there are educational discrepancies between Canada and the US, particularly in poorer states. We received comprehensive geography lessons in elementary school, with particular focus on local land features (in my case, mostly glacial features). The first Earthcache I developed is a feature near my hometown that I learned about in Grade 7. There are many, many sources, besides academic journal articles, that are perfectly acceptable. Pamphlets published by park authorities, textbooks, and websites aimed at the general public can all be very informative. An Earthcache page needn't involve a PhD level dissertation. That being said, the Earthcache reviewers are not doing a great job of keeping Earthcaches at a consistent reading level. They'll gladly give people a hard time for not providing enough information, but I have yet to hear of someone being asked to revise a cache description that is too dense. Considering that one of the more common criticisms of Earthcaches is that they're too hard/ too boring, looking at the reading level should be a priority for the reviewers. I'm not convinced that the reviewers are actually equipped to enforce the guidelines. I agree with everything you said except that iif you are implying that Canadian education is superior, you are all wet! I hope that isn't what you meant. I certainly wouldn't presume to have the knowledge and ability to make such comparisons! It's no secret"? Sure, but I have one question. Why make such a comparison in the first place? Now I'm over 50 and educated in the US. I was fortunate to have a baseline education in both history and geography. In the preceeding decades, for whatever reason, both were forsaken in basic education, resulting in a large portion of the population that have no geogrgaphic awareness of the country in which they live in. This is a very unfortunate sign of the times...
  16. Perhaps the answer to all of this lies in just how one poses the question. Now direct activities such as measurements yield a more defined answer. I'm finding that the questions that invoke the power of observation seem to lead to better responses as they pertain to the understanding of the text. In other words, there is NO SINGLE right answer. Simply put, just ask them to explain something in their own words and you should be able to determine their level of understanding.
  17. In Reference To Post #15: Plagiarize: To put forth as original to oneself the ideas or words of another. Copyright: The legal right granted to an author, composer, playwright, publisher, or distributor to exclusive publication, production, sale, or distribution of a literary, musical, dramatic, or artistic work. I feel the issue of plagiarism can be avoided by citing the original Earthcache and its author as a reference. This would place credit, both in text and concept, where credit is due. When references are required, most folks reference an informational source. This case is no different. Now given the fact that all ECs are, in fact published, and this “document” becomes unarguably a document that can be referenced, without the fear of plagiarism. So a fair mix of original text and cited previous text should suffice. How many of us have referenced information in a paper, to avoid plagiarism, without actually speaking w/the author? Has any of us applied for a copyright on our ECs? Has CS done this on his material? I guess the real question here is just how willing are GS and GSA to allow for a resurrection of the “Fabled 203 ECs”? There seems be an interest on our end.
  18. Is this the one in the "Burgh" say sometime in March of 2011?
  19. “I think that dad is right, developing a EarthCache IS like fighting with a Skunk. Now, back to playing Xbox!!!” BTW… I like you Dads analogy…Perhaps the best way to beat a Shunk is to walk around and not confront it? “Plagiarism can easily be avoided by citing your sources, whether they're academic sources, a pamphlet from a park, or an old Earthcache page.” Plagiarism is and always will be a matter of interpretation. Perhaps the best way to address the issue of “plagiarism” would be to site the previous EC and it’s author. The EC is in fact a published document!. Please note the term used to “officially” open the EC for use. October 12 by geoawareCA Published[/color]
  20. I’m not sure of the details of this conference where, when, target audience and so on. . You might want to take a look at GC2FXQR and be able to get an idea or two form this. You can set this up on a table like a Sed 201 Lab if need be.
  21. As a government employee of 29 years, I think, geoawares silence lies w/the fact he is truley caught in the middle of this issue, while the rest of us have a greater latitude to express our concerns... Some call it politics...
  22. All of Cav Scouts listings have been archived by Groundspeak. He got banned, and before the ban expired, they archived all of his listings. That was a real blow for EarthCaching, we lost alot of great EC's. GS conclusion seems to have taken the wind out of my sails for the time being… So we will see what the future holds.
  23. I’m a bit disappointed… I just want the opportunity to express my opinion on this issue: I’m a bit disappointed with GSs conclusion of this issue. I thought that the whole purpose of Earthcaches was to enlighten folks about earth science, apparently, I was wrong, or GS does not see this. Granted the opportunity to revive these caches may be done by others, while “borrowing” the same concept and location. Personally and Professionally I find this to lie somewhere between plagiarism and downright theft. From a thread now closed… Allow 203 earthcaches to survive, A plea to GS QUOTE 9K-lord @ Dec 7,2010, 09:21AM) Let´s wait what will be GS respond to Joranda´s request. They should answer although for them it could be already closed chapter. If their respond is negative (I hope it won´t be) then we can discuss about saving them. At least those that will meet new guidelines. GS respond to Joranda´s request Ms. Jen was nice enough to email me back this morning and they will not unarchive the ECs. " It is our determination that these caches will remain permanently archived." You are welcome to re-submit the caches under your own account, and the reviewer team will be happy to publish those that comply with the current cache publication guidelines (for both EarthCaches and the rest) and our Terms of Use. I did what I could, I asked to talk them over and I got my answer. As far as copy and paste his earthcaches, I will not, they was his ideas. The ones here in my home state that I was at with him and in Missouri while we was at MOGA, since we found them together those I will try as long as geoware will publish them for me.
  24. It is done... Thanks for the opportunity.
