  1. You may want to approach the trees and or the springs from a soil science angle. Remember in the truest sense soil is nothing more than rock that couldn’t keep itself together… Perhaps the best way to understand the soils at your location [uS] would be to get soil survey reports, usually obtained thru an Agricultural Department [state or Federal]. Use the soils as the initial point of your EC and then work in the other elements of the Earth Sciences.
  2. Actually the Norwegian PT does not look like one perfectly suited for hiking (they all seem to be 1.5/1.5 micros along a road). It rather looks like a trail for the "car express". I would be annoyed if I had a cache in that area regardless of whether EC or not. Cezanne Sorry to hear that… I’m becoming more and more impressed w/the Rails-To-Trails System in this country and how geocaching has brought more traffic on these trails.
  3. There’s a good chance that most folks doing the power trail will stop by your EC. I am familiar w/your feelings on power trails. After trying a few I found them rather enjoyable. In general they are developing more creative containers and D/T’s. As a devotee of the “shoe leather express”, rather than biking, I find the power trails an enjoyable way of walking many of the rails to trail out our way. Through power trails I’ve found R to T’s I never knew existed. Those that have ECs along the way are usually incorporated into most of the cachers journey. There not just for “number hounds” any more. Give em try…
  4. Just a note here... Bill Nye the Science Guy was an old PBS [Public Broadcasting Station]Series making science interesting to kids. I'd guess I would have to see this concept at work first, but would a high tech sales pitch really be needed?
  5. Typo on my part... GC2FXQR Rocks in a Stream
  6. You might want to take a look at GC2FQR. Your basic Sedimentology 201 lesson.
  7. Sounds Good... If you need help, let me know...
  8. An after thought.... You could email me w/a discription or intent of your future ECs and perhaps I could provide some guidence?
  9. It looks like you’re from PA. The quickest reference for a beginner would be to get on the PA DCNR website. Once there look for the PA Topographic and Geologic Survey. They will have various publications that you can download from the site. Another source could be a local college or university. You may want to try West Chester University. A former college prof of mine [from Cal U], Dr. Nikitina is an instructor there. She or someone there may be willing to give you a hand? Would you know anyone who works for an environmental firm? They usually have an earth sciencist on staff. Also check local caching groups in your area there may be someone willing to help. Let me know how things turn out. An after thought.... You could email me w/a description or intent of your future ECs and perhaps I could provide some guidence?
  10. For me its an ethics call...and each person has to play that call themselves. If it is so very important for a person to log an EC because they can rather than because they follow the game, then so be it. I would have to agree that the bottom line, in this situation, is one of ethics. Either you is, or you ain't! The cacher logging the find should NOT however "force" the CO into a position were the CO has to make a judgement call on the ethics of his/her own cache. If so, why the the heck bother w/setting one up in the first place. I will never be convinced that someone could win at a game, prior to playing that very same game. Any child would tell you this is cheating! Thus, timing is everything... If someone is so desperate for a "smiley" let them pull this on another type of cache. The bottom line is that as the CO I would view this as cheating and remove the log. Speaking of "ethics"... I retired from the PA DEP this past June. The other day I received a letter telling me I MUST, as a matter of law, fill out and submit both the Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics forms for last year {thank God for the last time}. So, retiring after nearly 30 years of protecting the environment you hopefully will understand my immovable stance on both ethics and compliance...
  11. No, it isn't it. If the logging requirements have been fulfilled, he has no choice and needs to accept the log. Asking for photos showing a date is by the way not any longer guideline-conforming. Cezanne Looking for a ruling on this: I unknowingly visited and Earthcache a few months before I started Geocaching. Given the 1st sentence of the original entry for this topic I would have to disagree with the above entry. Many on this site have shown objection to others who bend the rules of this “game”. The simple fact of the matter is that in this case, the ”find” had taken place prior to a cachers involvement in the “game”. So what we have here is an issue of honesty and ethics as to the timing of the “find”, not a simple matter of fulfilling requirements, picture or not. If, we are to play this “game” should we not play it fairly? I for one would not risk my integrity for a simple “smiley”.
  12. From an ethical prospective I personally wouldn't claim the find.
  13. Here's my 2 cents: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/discourage Definition of DISCOURAGE transitive verb 1 : to deprive of courage or confidence : DISHEARTEN was discouraged by repeated failure 2 a: to hinder by disfavoring trying to discourage absenteeism b: to dissuade or attempt to dissuade from doing something tried to discourage her from going Perhaps we should take a look at a particular term, that being the word discourage. My interpretation of this term would lead the source of this topic toward difficulty not banishment. Remember when it comes to fees, we all have a choice...
  14. I have to agree w/the concensus so far. I feel sorry for anyone trying to use the EC educators guide. From one who has a degree in Geology as well as Earth Scince, it still protrays a more traditional definition and usage of Earth Science. But others have the "approal stamp" in their hand... As an after thought prehaps the term Geoscience Caches could be used??? This may minimize the confusion w/the interpretation of "Earth Science".
  15. It's usually the 1st day of Earth Science Week: 2012 October 14-20 2013 October 13-19
  16. I would have to agree w/this. It is "archived", regardless of the reason(s)...
  17. Good point GEO WALKER. I once tried to muggle a mountain top. I was exhausted before getting it to the bottom. At least now the mountain top is a plateau and very flat! lol Now we know it was discussed. We just don't know why PMO ECs were allowed continue? But I thought only coal companies were the only ones allowed to do that... but that would only lead to numerous environmental discussions...
  18. It’s my understanding, from others, that PMO caches tend to give the owner a greater sense of security for the cache from being muggled. As for the educational basis of ECs I can’t fathom why one would want to limit their audience The quality is w/in each EC.
  19. I'm not soliciting another site just looking at options...
  20. True... but they are virtuals are they not? Perhaps the requirments could be used much like answering the questions in the old virts? To the best of my knowledge there doesn't appear to be any limitations on types of caches say waterfalls, springs and others.
  21. BTW.. I AM the crazy uncle... ask my sisters.
  22. I fully understand… It seems that since the 1st of this year many EC issues, have been made as clear as 18 lb. drilling mud and the only consistency is inconsistency itself. Many cachers in my area are disappointed w/developing ECs and as a result have given up. If it wasn’t for the positive responses I’ve received, I too would have done so as well. So, as of now I’m truly sitting on the fence w/ECs. I’ve caught wind of something known a Opencaching, perhaps it’s time to look into it a bit more?
