  1. Thanks, all you people at the trouble end of this thing. We know you'll get it fixed eventually. At least in the northeast it's not the grandest day to be outdoors. Feel bad for whoever said it's gorgeous where they are, but then again, it's gorgeous where they are, isn't it? :-)

'Look forward to logging in when I can. In the meantime, I guess there's laundry...

  2. I'm interested in plotting some of my own GPS coordinates on a map for my family to see the borders of some property we own. I don't need to keep them on the map; I just need to be able to find one at a time at least so that I can make a note of it. I took a walk around our property and marked a bunch of waypoints, but would like to see where they are relative to one another.

Am I missing something or is this basically impossible on the internet? I see plenty of places where they'll create coordinates for you from a point on a map, but not the reverse (at least not specific to 3 decimal points like we have in geocaching.) I know the software that Groundspeak uses works to do this because that's how our caches get published, but how does an average person like me get hold of this ability? Anyone know?

  3. Hey, Motorcycle Mama, you win the prize! Oh my, when I logged on for the first time this spring some sort of note came up about validation. I must've been in a hurry and figured I'd deal with it later, then completely forgot about it. No more prompts came up, so here I sat wondering what in the world had happened. Well, at least now I know all the possible solutions for problems in the future. Thanks to Miragee and RonFisk for your attempts at fishing me out also. I'm now a more "educated consumer" and definitely a happier geocacher!

    Cheers!

  4. I'm working on a Mac; OS 10.4.11; Using Safari 3.1 (but it also doesn't work on Firefox 2.0.0.11). I have cookies enabled right now for "always" because I thought perhaps that was the issue, but it doesn't appear to make a difference. Before I switched it, I had cookies set on "only sites I navigate to" which should work for geocaching.com, so I don't think cookies is the issue.

The problem: Instead of coordinates at the top of the cache pages I get question marks.

Any idea why? I'd really like to get back out there now that spring has sprung!

    Thanks,

  5. Is there a way on Geocaching.com to locate caches more specifically than by country? We will be in specific places in Switzerland and Germany this summer. I can find caches by getting to a map and then dragging around until I find the city I'm looking for, but am wondering if there's a more efficient way to do it.

Is it possible that the owner of the "virtual" cache I'm talking about used the term virtual by mistake? What do you call the type of cache I refer to above?

Okay, the cache has a little ghost on it. (I'm learning so much). I clicked on it. This one must've been grandfathered in. I'm glad of that. It's a geocaching kind of find by the time you get there.

Goodbye and thanks for your patience.

  7. Ummm, virtual caches are no longer allowed.

Interesting, there is still one listed that I know of and I thought it was a great idea. The location is under raging white water at times and a cache would never survive. You're supposed to go to the location, take a picture and post it at the cache page.

I'm glad I said I was a tadpole up front. Guess it shows. I'm probably not understanding the harm of virtual caches.

    Should I take any action?

  9. I'm just a tadpole, but after reading this thread (and owning a summer home in a vacation destination) I'd like to make two suggestions to anyone thinking of placing a vacation cache:

    1. Before you place the cache, check with a local geocacher and see if someone there would be willing to "co-sign". If you can't get someone on board, don't leave it. (I've a suspicion that people are placing caches then going home to take care of the details of registering, etc. By then the damage is done if there is no one there to maintain.)

    2. Make virtual caches in interesting places if you really want to share that place with others but can't maintain it after you're gone. Vacation destinations, especially isolated ones, are enticing precisely because they are remote. I think the virtual cache is a great solution.

By the way, are there instructions in the getting started section with constructive ideas for vacation caches? Think I'll go check. Not that we'd want to encourage it, but a little "education" might help it be not quite so offensive.

    Cheerios!

  10. I'm very new to geocaching. Is there a general page of abbreviations somewhere?

Nevermind, I found it. Couldn't see your signature, Miragee, because I hadn't logged in yet.

    Cheers, everyone.
