  1. i'm sorry, but i'm a little toasted that you want to find a backdoor. i paid my $30 for the simple desire to have paid my share to help support a site i use and derive so much pleasure from. i did not at the time understand or care for PQs. all the other goodies are worth little to me.

the difference between us? i have a desire to carry my own weight, i guess.

don't nobody write in to tell me how poor you are, either. i'm not interested. right now i'm facing the possiblity that i may lose the job i have held for twenty years. it is unlikely that i will get another. i may lose my house. i eat a lot of cold cereal these days.

i'm STILL glad i paid. and next december if i have to give up some groceries to renew, i will. i hope it doesn't come to that, but i will.

You my friend have a terrible addiction. ALL my cash flow goes towards the comfort and well being of my family...After they are taken care of,then and only then do I spend on the Hobbies I enjoy.

I appreciate that you support a website that brings you such fun...But some folks out there have different priorities.

Im a cancer patient supporting a family, between medical bills, lost wages,on top of regular bills Im lucky to have 10 extra dollars this year.

I appreciate Geocaching.com for the free membership and will at some point go to a premium membership,But only after I meet the needs of my household.

There's a thread out there somewhere about "lurkers." This is the kind of thread that keeps lurkers in the shadows. It started out as an honest question from a newbie and turned into so many flames that it's hard to aim the extinguisher.

I'm not intimidated. I like when people post in my threads no matter what they say. Like when Dale Earnhardt said "I don't care if they're cheerin' or booin' as long as they're making noise."

  2. Except an LEO wouldn't KNOW you were only there to find something and some wouldn't really care. There's a good chance they are going to assume the worst first (true, you might get away with it...OR, you COULD end up down town because Johnny Law needed one more bust to make quota...and $2500 is a nice chunk of change). Rules are rules and if we can't follow them, we could find ourselves very limited on where we can play!

What about the GPS unit you're bound to be holding? Some LEOs know what caching is and could put 2+2 together. In the end, you are risking this sport for the sake of a cache.

so......IF the copper showed up in the 2 minute time frame I was actually in the park (running in the dark); and IF the copper was desperately trying to fill a quota; and IF he saw my GPS; and IF he knew what geocaching was; and IF he put 2+2 together; then MAYBE I MIGHT give the sport a black eye

oh boy......you're right. I guess i shoulda come back to the cache ;)

  3. That's where troubles can happen Simpjkee. What would have happened if you had been caught by a more than righteous LEO while in that park for the 2 minutes? I know it's a long shot, but the down side is that you ran the risk of having that cache (and others) banned from that park (and any other park that are in the care of the park in question). Would it be worth it to cause that big a problem over something you could have easily went back after during operating hours??

It's not just you that you would have hurt in that instance...caching really needs GOOD publicity these days, not a black eye! If others can be affected by your actions, you should consider that and act responsibly!

those park fines/hours really are there to scare off teenagers and such who maybe in the park at night drinking and such. if lets say someone saw me, I would say "I dropped something here earlier and I was trying to find it before something happened to it." then whoever saw me would say "well the park is closed sonny" and I would say "yeah i know Im just leaving" and then they say "alright, park opens back up at 6am" and i say "thank you sir" and they say "no problem". harmless and geocaching is never involved.

now if I was in there drinking and such then they might decide to actually take steps to discipline me, in which case geocaching still wouldnt be involved.

  4. If you want a more "rustic" hiking experience, your best bet is the Barton Creek Greenbelt. It's much farther south than where you'll be, but it offers miles of hiking along the creek and a ton of caches. We just hiked a few miles of it today to pick up a cache and take some time wading in the creek. Bring your swimsuit if you'd really like to cool off.

See these caches for a couple of reference points:

    GC708

    GC6FA

The trails run from west Austin all the way to Zilker park, which is just south of downtown.

    Central Texas Geocachers

those look great. and you can wade in the creek, that sounds awesome. my mom wants to take a day trip to the university.

it only looks to be about 25-30 miles from georgetown to austin so I'll definately keep this in mind. thank you very much.

  5. I can't quite tell from your post if you're looking for something more challenging or just general info on the trails that you've found.

I'm a very unexperienced hiker, but I am in good shape. I would have no probblem going on a 12 mile hike with elevation change. I have no clue how to rock climb or anything so thats definately out of the question. I'd like to find a good hike that will take a few hours that also has a bunch of caches along the way.

Here's the best route I can find for now, but it looks like this path is just a paved road and I can walk on paved roads here in Arizona. I'd like something a little more rugged, but not something for "advanced" hikers. Keep in mind from the satellite images its hard for me to guess just where this trail lies in that spectrum.

    does that make more sense?

  6. Maybe political pamphlets in caches isn't a buzz kill after all. Maybe they are just a catalyst for some fun.

Religious and political caches are a bad idea because religion and politics divides people. I just wish our border actually did that too...

    oooh, wait, wait.....

(practically hopping up and down on one foot...)

is dividing people good or bad? either what divides people is a bad idea, or a good one. maybe it's a bad idea to divide people, but you want it anyway?

    that sounds about right.

It's better to be united but that means behaving in a way that doesn't divide people. Not following laws divides people.

And following laws meant to divide people divides people as well.

Im starting to think that you placed the caches in question that I posted this thread about.

Haha. No all I ever place in caches are toys for the kids. You know.....the BIG KIDS...

for the millionth time, IT WAS WRITTEN ON THE CACHE ITSE..............eeeehhhhhh forget it. this thread is just about dead anyway.
    Relax.... :o

    chillin :)

  7. I wouldnt trespass through someone's back yard or anything, but sure I have trespassed. here's two examples.

    1. I was walking to caches and there were 2 parks seperated by a big open deserty area that was abandoned except for a halfway falling over barbed wire fence with a rusty no trespassing sign. To go around the area would have added at least a mile to my overall walk. So i said screw it and trespassed across it. Looked like the fence was really more for trying to keep ATV's and such out. Kids commonly get on their ATV's and motocross bikes and trying doing jumps and such on private property. I imagine a bunch end up getting themselves hurt and such. anyway

    2. It was 1:30am and there was a small park that had a sign that said Park closed from 10pm to 6am, subject to $2500 fine, etc. I was just about 20 yards away from a metal trashcan and i knew from the cache description that it was a magnetic key case so again i said screw it and ran in, grabbed the cache, ran out, signed the log, ran in, placed the cache, and then ran out. I was only in the park for 2 mins total.

I dont think these things are a big deal, but no way anyway should be jumping in peoples backyards and stuff.

  8. hand-pounded pennies with "flask" engraved on one side

    my cd

bootleg cds (my own music or stories. they are bootlegs because they are recordings not intended for release)

photo dvds (my geocaching photos acompanied by my music)

around christmas i put out the flask christmas album, which i leave as gifts rather than trades. i also leave these in stores and at work and church and bus stops... people seem to like them.

do you have a website where I can hear your music........like myspace or something

next topic, placing a cache in the girls locker room. yay or nay?

  11. welcome to the land of the free.
It is the land of the free to the illegals. Cross the border and hatch a baby and everything is free...

somehow i don't think you were paying attention. i am giggling now. it is a directional giggling.

we don't really have a problem with foreiners coming down to "hatch a baby" as you so distastefully put it.

I caught that, but I couldnt tell if you were joking or just had bad english or what......then I just stopped caring

  12. I'm going to Texas in mid July. I'm staying with my cousin in Georgetown, just north of Austin. I'm looking for a good hiking trail with geocaches near Georgetown. The best I could see from the geocache map is a trail going from a subdivision to the dam at Lake Georgetown. I'm not a very experienced hiker, but the trail I see looks easy. It even appears to be paved. I'm wondering if anyone can give me a suggestion for a good hike/geocaching adventure. Thanks.

BTW, you can look in my sig for an adventure I ended up on when I was in Oregon a month or so ago. I guess I'm just trying to plan a little better for my Texas trip than I did when in Oregon.

  13. 1. I would a fourth feature along with size, terrain, and difficulty, adressing the ligthing around the cache and if it is accessible at night. I have more caching time at night than during the day and there is nothing worse than going to a cache and finding out that the park is closed, etc.

    2. I would like to be able to search by zip code and only recieve geocaches in that zip code only. I geocache by paper and it would be soooooo helpful to be able to "clear" the caches in a zip code and then move to the next zip code, but as far as I can tell when you search by zip code you get an endless number of caches with the first in the list being the closest to the zip code.

    3. I would like to be able to take my "found" caches off the search map. I can remove the found caches from the list search, but on the map they show up as number balloon and a smiley face on it. I would much much much rather they not show up at all.

  14. I would trade much much more often if there were adult type items that are worth trading for, ya know. I'm not really interested in trading for plastic dinosaurs and rubber snakes and stuff.

I would even trade/put some actual "merchandise" in them, but i have a feeling someone would log:

    T: AA mini mag flashlight

    L: plastic dinosaur

    etc, etc, etc

  15. Bono, the lead singer of the band U2, is famous throughout the entertainment industry for being more than just a little self-righteous.

At a recent U2 concert in Glasgow, Scotland, he asked the audience for total quiet.

Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds.

Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone, "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies."

A voice with a broad Scottish accent, from the front of the crowd, pierces the quiet

"Well, foockin stop doin it then!"

That is gooood. But seriously, I have nothing but respect for what Bono's done/doing.

Caches are not allowed to have an agenda because it might offend someone. As we know by these threads there's not much that doesn't offend someone out there. I was just a little surprised that someone pointing the finger at people that are constantly breaking the law would be offensive. I guess maybe it would offend the anarchists...

    who is offended?

Again I was speaking in general terms. I don't understand why one guy throwing some literature against illegal immigration into cache would bother anyone except of course the illegals.

Its written on the cache, not an item in the cache. and there are tons of people who see illegal immigrants as a necessary labor group, etc. in this country. Plus they are tons of legal US citizens who are related to honest hardworking illegals who do a lot of good for the country. its not just illegals who would be offended by a blatantly anti immigration political message.

disclaimer: i am completely neutral, I'm just pointing out a few facts.

They are breaking the law....

maybe the law needs revision......since they are considered by many to be a vital part of our economy, etc.
There are legal ways to work in this country. Your revision to the law is to ignore the law. This is what is happening. Also are 20 million more illegals vital to the economy? 40 million? How about 60 million more? Where does it end? There is nothing stopping it from increasing to the point where it does severely burden the economy. Cross the border and pop out a baby and you get to stay forever. Free everything! Come one, come all...

disclaimer: i am completely neutral, I'm just pointing out a few facts............................and playing devils advocate.

  16. "Experts suggest a major factor in the decline of outdoor time is parental fears about leaving children unattended -- aggravated by excessive media coverage of horrific crimes."

-----not so much as aggravated as much as caused

I think this factor has a lot more to do with it than people realize.

yeah i agree. the quotes were from the story, the dashes are my thoughts.
