  1. My 120 did that this weekend, and had not locked up since the last software upgrade. I had to pull the batteries a couple of times. It's a rare thing indeed. I am using rechargeables, Powerex 2gh, but have been for the last few months. Cadence (OddTodd and CheleBell) FRS2,12GMRS22(WPXD965)
  2. I can't seem to find any reference to this on either a Google search, Cobra site search or Metacrawler. Do you have a link? T. Cadence (OddTodd and CheleBell) FRS2,12GMRS22(WPXD965)
  3. I also use the Powerex - the 2000's and the Maha charger. As long as I remember to bring my spares, I'm okay - but I guess that goes for anyone using alkalines too! T. Cadence (OddTodd and CheleBell) FRS2,12GMRS22(WPXD965)
  4. In Spokane we have a yearly event called Bloomsday - it's a 10km run with many many participants. A group called Ghostly Tribe made a multi that followed the route taken by the runners - it's of course called "Bloomsday Runner" and is the most inventive multi I've seen. If you are ever in the area, let me know if you want to cache it - I'll help with the first waypoint. Bloomsday Runner by Ghostly Tribe T. Cadence (OddTodd and CheleBell) FRS2,12GMRS22(WPXD965)
  5. Hmm. Nice idea, but why Zip Code? If you have coords, doesn't that transcend the need for Zip Code? Recommendations/Wish List in case the Real R.W.Benjamin is watching: 1. How about an area to save or link the web page of the cache to? 2. More structured entering of Coords - Pull down menus for N/S, W/E, separate fields for Degrees, Minutes and then the decimal minutes. 3. Line up the entry boxes so the 'TAB-Flow' is intuitive 4. Don't be shy about reducing font size *or* make the font size adjustable by the windows Display Settings Control Panel. If I want to be able to see another window at the same time as I am in this program, I would not be able to see some of the fields. 5. Color choices. 6. My Rino does the same thing, I guess I looked at it as a "Don't rely on these numbers" type of message. It has only a weak signal. If all 4 satellites are black and showing that they are at the highest signal strength, there may be a problem - 3 satellites is a weak signal, unless you have 4 medium to strong signals it will report weak.YMMV OddTodd
  7. The CDI or Course Deviation Indicator is a different way of telling whether you are going 'Straight' towards your waypoint goal. First some Vocab... Bearing Pointer - That's the default config that shows a heavy dark arrow pointing the direction towards your goal. If you turn away from the goal, your arrow still follows the goal, even if it is not inline with your direction of travel. Course Pointer and CDI is an option that shows you how far you deviate from the direct line to your goal, a line showing the correct direction of travel will move to the side, showing that you are off to one side or other of the direct path to your goal. The Rino 120 Manual shows pictures of the two options for Bearing Arrow and Course Pointer arrow with CDI. In PDF format, you'll find page 22 of the manual on Page 32 in the Acrobat Reader version. I'll verify scale, but I believe the small x's that show the perpendicular deviation line are spaced apart to show incrementally how far you are off of the original path. OddTodd
  8. SurefireM6, Please update your software to comply with the new FCC ruling - 30 second position reporting. Wouldn't want anyone to get in trouble, it really doesn't make that much of a difference and it's easier to be compliant than nervous. JMHO
  9. I've seen that somewhere, but new enough to the forum to not understand. 'Markwell' must be an inside joke? OddTodd
  10. I read the PDF, thanks. It states at the top of Page 4 - "Do not try to charge batteries other than those listed in this manual..." I also noticed it topped out at 1100 mAh for AA batteries (Pg.5). It may have been a dandy of a charger in it's time, it may however be time to get a newer one capable of the 2000 mAh - but now they've got 2100's and 2200's - when do you jump in? I ordered a MAHA charger and 8 batteries of the 2000 mAh type - the charger may not be able to handle the 4000mAh batteries coming out next year - just kidding - nothing above 2200 personally seen. The newer chargers are made to keep the batteries cooler while charging, they prolong the useful life of rechargeables and they handle more powerful batteries. I'm not selling them to you, just think you might consider them. Worst case scenario? Battery or charger meltdown, house burned to the ground, neighborhood caught fire and you are liable for the insurance deductible. Slightly bad scenario? Unpredictable charging of the higher mAh AA's. I would most definitely NOT try it at home. OddTodd
  11. specific rino serial numbers having problems Please read this thread, it covers what you need to do to have the speaker and mic checked out. I did, I am very satisfied with the result. Good Luck! OddTodd
  12. Thanks, will purchase pending approval from financial planner and activities coordinator. OddTodd
  13. I was looking at those Transformers, it says you can add on to the existing frame - does it look like the pic on the site or does it come with less storage? OddTodd
  14. $25! I'll pay shipping! LOL! Just do it. Garmin customer service is fine, it's the price you are concerned about. They gotta make money, they're a business after all. You can't buy a Yellow Non-WAAS etrex in the average store for that price. You might on EBay, but that's used too. $100 is worth it - that's only 12.5 movie tickets! Cut your moviegoing budget by a movie a month and go Caching instead! Just My Humble Opinion. Rayt333 - I'll buy it from you for $25... OddTodd
  15. Interesting, I'm left handed yet use the Rino and the Etrex's left handed. I have to switch back and forth between hands during the endgame. Kinda like Sam Colt making the single-action revolver left handed - the loading/unloading gate is on the right side - not where a 'righty' would have put it had they made it first... Well, the neck lanyard will resolve this issue! T.
  16. gps garage sale Try the GPS garage sale forum. Someone might want to sell one to you. This forum is for things like discussions about the Metroguide software
  17. Received my Rino 120 back from Garmin today. All of the documentation as to what was done was thorough. I sent it on Wed 3/26 overnight air. They received it on the 27th, scheduled the repair for the 31st. Posting this on the 3rd, it took just over a week. I was impatient! I bugged them twice about it - called their 800 number, asked about the RMA - each time they were more than happy to talk and search for the information. Very pleasant customer service. Repair Summary: (YMMV - this is verbatim from the service report) Confirmed Problem. Transferred customer waypoint data. Replaced the rear case and verified the current modifications were completed. This unit is compliant with the upcoming service bulletin 303. Added spacer sponges to the battery terminal and battery compartment door. Verified the unit works on AA and external power. Updated software to latest version and aligned unit to optimum performance. Unit passes its ATE tests and is operating within normal limits. OK to Return to service. Verified the operation with another Rino 120. Unit acquired satellites in 45 seconds. Transferred customer waypoint data. GARMIN ROCKS! I can tell it's tuned. I put batteries in, powered it on and in the drive to work (10 minutes) it had a differential lock on 3 satellites, and I had never seen that before on my Rino. While driving, I picked up FRS signals on channel 2 from someone - sound was clearer than before. Didn't sound as fuzzy. Detractors say what you will. I feel that Garmin has done very well by me.
  18. Thank you for the response JB, and thanks again for testing. OT
  19. Nice test. Makes you wonder what makes the Lithium E2 last one and a half times that of a regular alkaline. Couple of questions... Was WAAS enabled? Any activity on the radio channel used? Were the Powerex 2000's used multiple times, or is that a first charge out of the box? Again, nice test, thanks! OT
  20. Thanks for the links! Yeah, the battery powered would be nice, the Rino already uses the cig adapter. Hey, now I need MORE rechargeable AA's! Hehehe OT
  21. Spyder40, Very interested in how your Powerex's and Maha do - looks to be my next purchase if it is worth it. Which re-radiating do you use with the Rino? OT
  22. Haven't run in to another person with one yet, but I'm hopeful.
  23. Yep, Spokane Area. It's in for updates right now. How about licensed for GMRS? I've done that too. OddTodd Rino120/FRS 2;0 or 12;0
  24. I sent an email through Garmin's website, got a response the next day, but the representative either didn't look at the serial number provided, or thought it was a completely unrelated issue. In his response, which was professional and sincere, he indicated trying a few settings and if I was still experiencing the difficulties, reply to him and we could get it sent in for repairs. It was a fast response, but since others have called, I thought I'd try it too. I called Garmin (1-800-800-1020) went through the menu options, got to speak with a very nice lady. After amenities I said, "I have a Rino 120, and it's serial number is within the range for that upgrade". She instantly knew what I was talking about. She gathered all the info, and gave me an RMA number to ATTN when sending in my unit. She said to me that the turn around is pretty quick, it all depends on how I send it to them. I asked her if they were going to post the 'upgrade' serial numbers or info on their website, she said, "no, because one, it's not a recall, and two, people will think that there is something wrong with their units, when all we are doing is upgrading the hardware." Sounds reasonable to me. I overnighted it. hehehe OddTodd
  25. I know this was mentioned before, but I lost the thread and am too lazy to search. Today my mom put the 120 into her pocket (inner pocket of fleece jacket) and it beeped. I just thought that it lost GPS signal - it actually powered off. It wouldn't power on again. She was just walking, no calisthenics or anything like that. After opening the battery cover I had to reset the middle battery. It powered on without problems. All my settings and 400 waypoints were intact. Has anyone else seen this happen with their Rino's? OddTodd (Spokane, WA)
