  1. Criminal... Chris... let's hear it! If your brain isn't addled too badly by that car accident - glad you're okay. My lovely wife and I began caching, I had done a cache before her so set up my account as OddTodd. My name is Todd and as some will attest, odd. When my lovely wife set up her account, the Rhyming/2Syllable method was the pattern of the day, Michele became CheleBell. My wife and I will have been married for 5 years on the Solstice of '04. We're still on our honeymoon. She and I are in step, and if separated at a party will tell the exact same stories to everyone - in order to not bore them to tears we usually stick together. After many failures on my part to find caches without her, I recommended that we combine our user names into one. There begins the name Cadence - our last name is 'Cady' and one of the definitions for cadence is Pace, in-step. It seemed to fit. To maintain our own identities, I parenthesized our individual names. I became a ham radio operator in September of '03, so added my callsign. My lovely wife needed an addition, so I added XYL to hers - that's Ham talk for 'My Wife' -okay, okay, it really means eX Young Lady - but she's still young, she's just mine. Usually I'm the only one to post on the forums, and I'm told that Cadence can also be a woman's name - this gets confusing for some. Nice topic, thanks! OddTodd - K7PKT
  2. First, check out Moun10goat's 45th Birthday Potluck I know there's a lot of logs to read over, but the general idea (for those that didn't want to click the above link) is that you make a temporary multiple cache for the guest of honor... Here's how it works. 1. Go to the site of the party, then wander around getting waypoints. Get enough waypoints that you can have multiple participants. Ours was held at a day use area in Plummer, ID, and the total walk was a little over a third of a mile. 2. Organize the waypoints on pieces of paper, or give the waypoints to the Multi participants. I put two lines of coords on each person's piece of paper - the first one I labeled "You Are Here", the second set I labeled, "Make him earn these coords from you!". 3. Each participant was told to encrypt their 2nd set of coords in some way - a puzzle, bunches of questions, different coordinate set (change it to UTM), a riddle with the answer being the way to decode it, you get the idea. The important thing is not to make each puzzle a show-stopper. Granted, the person creating the puzzle can help since they are there. 4. Give the coordinates to the Starter - in this case it was Moun10Goats wife LadyStevenson. Once he got those coords from her and a good satellite lock, he had to run from person to person, decoding/decrypting/begging for the answer to get the next set of coords. We had a lot of fun with this as you can tell by some of the reports after the event, I just wanted to share this idea with you. I really don't know if it's original, but it was enough fun that I had to post it. Thanks for reading! OddTodd-K7PKT Cadence (OddTodd-K7PKT and CheleBell)
  3. I'm looking at the Foretrex 101 also, if only to have a lighter GPS to carry while hiking. Very stealth too! I'm only hoping that they come out with more product images, ones showing the walking compass and arrow... OddTodd
  4. The Rino on the right looks more like the Rino 130 screen, less green than the 120. Different manufacturing locations? Change of lots between? It isn't unreadable is it? Personally I preferred the greener color. It was easier on the eyes at night. OddTodd
  5. Hmmm, for that price, why not make it Bluetooth? Wireless. Makes it easier to conceal the wires if there aren't any! Groan. Todd - K7PKT
  6. Thanks CP! Caught that about a minute before your clarification post. Thanks for posting. T.
  7. Edit - snipped lack of research. Found link. Wolf452, say that it wasn't found recently, how much work would you do to recover and actually see and image the rod? Thanks again, T.
  8. SV1086 This is my third benchmark I've looked for, thanks for any help you can give. My wife and I spent an hour or so locating this one, and have not yet found the actual rod. We found a witness post without sign on it, bent over near where it should be. There was new construction, at least newer than 1981. In order to have a driveway the land owner had to bring in dirt. I may need to look under the fill a bit, but no more than a foot or two. The coordinates given were off by more than a tenth of a mile, that made it really interesting. More accurate coords were N 47 37.717 W 117 26.457 Some questions... 1. I know coords are not exact, and should be used more for a good parking space than the actual location, but how often do you find they're REALLY off? 2. Anyone in Spokane, WA with a metal detector? I'm thinking that it would be the fastest way to find and point-dig for this one. 3. How much effort would YOU go through to recover this mark. I'm estimating that the rod is within 3 feet of the post, which wouldn't put the mark too far into the driveway. Probably no heavy machinery required, at most maybe a posthole digger. thanks! T.
  9. With my wife's Vista, every 3 or four trips it needs to be calibrated. It's less work and body flexing than the Magellan Hula, but it's better 'cause it makes you walk dizzy once done! OddTodd of Cadence
  10. I was told by a salesperson at Office Depot - I know some may not think that's a very strong reference, but she explained the following to me. Quality Control on a production line will take a sample of the units that go by them on the conveyor belt. They may take one of every 10 and plug it in to a test cradle and run a quick diagnostic. If it passes, they wait till the next tenth comes around. If it doesn't pass the diagnostic, Places I have worked have a procedure to stop the production line and send things back, or maybe just check every one for the next 30, then every fifth one, then back to every 10 once they all have worked. A refurbished item has been sent out as NEW to a retailer. Consumer purchased it as new and took it home only to find that it doesn't work. They return the item to the retailer, the retailer refunds or exchanges the item, then the retailer ships it back to the manufacturer. The manufacturer receives a certain amount of failed product, and has a REWORK line where the device is taken backwards through the production line. It's disassembled, then tested as it's reassembled, broken parts fixed, innards changed out, until it tests WORKING at the end of the line. This gets sent back out as REFURBISHED with warranty. Nothing new to many of you I'm sure, but wouldn't you rather purchase a cheaper piece of hardware or electronics toy that had a step by step guarantee that it's working? Would you rather buy new and hope that it's the one Quality Control tested? Personally I've worked in Keytronics, assembling keyboards on a production line. What the salesperson said was absolutely true about rework, quality control, etc. If there's a failure, all product on the line is 'frozen' and tests are done to make sure that it's an anomaly, then regular production continues. Go ahead, buy refurbished, it's been individually tested and it's cheaper. YMMV, JMHO, etc. OddTodd - K7PKT
  11. TresOkies, I have both a Rino 130 and a 120, both are completely compatible as far as trading info between them, sending location data, accessories, features, Except: 130 has 24 megs of memory instead of 8 130 can send silent text msgs to other 130's(only other 130's, not 120's or 110's) 130 has weather alert, weather channels, electronic compass and barometer. The memory is nice, I have the state of Washington MapSource Metroguide loaded. I could also do a major portion of the state in Topographical if I wanted, but find that the metroguide is working better for me. I'd highly recommend them! OddTodd-K7PKT * edit, spelling
  12. Received my book - in great shape, the line drawings are excellent. Thanks Dave, Thanks Patty! Thanks for putting up the site Zhanna, you're awesome! Todd Cady - K7PKT
  13. For those that don't live near a Fry's - Thomas Distributing is my choice for places to buy batteries. Get a really good charger, one that keeps the batteries cool while charging. Your battery life will be improved immensely! There are other batteries on that web page, and much more in the way of toys. I am not affiliated with them nor benefitting from this plug, they have just been really easy to work with and very prompt shippers. OddTodd
  14. Ditto, thanks for the info, looking forward to seeing the book. Patty is a very nice lady - great phone etiquette too. Thanks again DaveD! Todd - K7PKT
  15. Motley Crew, If you're talking about what I think you are, can you rename the "1" to "001"? "10" would be "010", etc. It may be an interim workaround for you. If I'm way off on this, please let me know. T.
  16. Awesome feature addition! Love the Download from GPS! I pulled all 500 waypoints from my GPSr to GSAK and then cleared the GPSr. I organized, edited and modified each of my personal (Non GC) waypoints and dropped them right back into my GPSr. It was flawless and smooth. For my personal preference, I changed the naming from %smart to %code when sending them back to my GPSr so I could keep my waypoint names instead of having them changed to my notes. For the final on ver.3, what say have a pulldown menu that lets you choose Cache Code, Smart Name or User Defined Variable - the variable options in the Help file? For the "maybe consider adding to next version list", I'm going to beg for Routes being able to be uploaded and downloaded from the GPSr. Yeah, I'm a beggar. I know it may be outside the realm of Geocaching to include Routes info, and not being a programmer, I've no idea how much work this would take. GSAK - THE Geocaching Operating System!
  17. For my case, I have a Rino 130, when I select a GCXXXX, I simply look at the Notes page - 30+ characters of description that give the full name. I think the 60C and maybe CS have this too... It also helps that we 'cache with a PPC and using GPXSonar makes it easier to sort by GCXXX and find what we're looking for. In our area, some wiley Team named Ghost and (not named) Rosco named one or two caches nearly the same - smart names are not as specific and clear as the GCXXXX to us.
  18. Hehehe, yeah, but so are Hummers. Tugboats aren't especially pleasing to the eye either! Working in the I/T industry, most of my complaints with PDA's is they are so easily dropped - usually when taking them out of the belt holster or protective cover to dock them. Y'know, they do look like the exterior is made of vulcanized rubber, I wonder if we could have contests to see how high one can be bounced... ...at least they come in different colors and not pastels!
  19. A humble Beta Tester and willing Guinea Pig at your service! Hehehe Thanks for a more than awesome program! Todd - K7PKT Edit: spelling!
  20. Clyde, You may have heard this before, but you are an awesome individual! I needed to make sure you knew that. Now that you're buttered up... I've converted a few people over to GSAK, those that haven't ever gone into the Forums here before - but they have a question, and I have read MOST of the entries here, but not every one I'll admit. I have about 50 or so favorite waypoints and I don't see a way of backing them up to GSAK like I have in the past with EZ. I would love to get rid of EZ. Is it on your extensive "To Do" list to Download waypoints from a GPS? Apologies if this was requested already. Todd - K7PKT
  21. Y'know, they even have different colored duct tape - you could look pretty spiffy - even if it did cost you your arm hair... the price we pay for style. (Sigh).
  22. Apologies, didn't know it was also called the Forerunner. The Garmin home page has it as "Foretrex". No wonder the search provided no finds. Thanks Karma Hunter! OddTodd - K7PKT
  23. Has anyone mentioned this? I searched, but no one seemed to have noticed... Nice Sneak Peek on Garmin's site for their wristwatch GPS. 007's companion For those urban caches when you gotta run stealth mode! 500 waypoints 10000 trackpoints Geko style system - no basemap yet 15 hours on a rechargeable L-ion battery A/C desktop charger with PC interface Personally I'm still pretty psyched about the Rino 130, but this is great! 24. Criminal - Do bears doot in the woods? Heheh, yes. It's legal to hunt in the National Forests and State Property. Not State Parks however. Here in Spokane, quite a bit of State Land butts up against State Park, and there is a patchwork of Private Property intermixed too. One friend/landowner on Mt. Spokane spray paints his dogs' tail orange - otherwise it might be mistaken for a coyote. Please, even if you are not going to be in State Land or Federal Land, but in the woods, wear something hunter orange. At minimum a hat to protect from ticks, errant branches, and keep your head from losing too much heat. My mother is a land owner and anti-hunter, yet I am able to convince her to wear hunter orange whenever she goes walking in her woods. It's just safer that way. I wish Idaho required hunter orange during modern firearm season. It saves lives. T. Cadence (OddTodd-K7PKT and CheleBell-XYL)
  25. EScout, Do you have a link for those tape measure Yagis? Cadence (OddTodd-K7PKT and CheleBell-XYL)
