  1. I just got this unit and it is great! I am trying to figure out whether I should become a premium member or not. The question is, if I become a premium member will I be able to get all the info from a cache into my GPS? I want the notes, hints, what type of cache ie:micro, multi, etc. In other words I want to stop printing out the page on the website. I am using EasyGPS and have looked at GSAK. Which would be better? I am tending to GSAK. Thoughts and suggestions very much welcome. Thanks!
  2. Thanks Huga, I opened that little guy up. I got to the cable and reinserted it and it worked all weekend. If it gets to be a pain to to that I might send it in. Thanks Ed
  3. I was pretty sure that is what was happening. Does the shell just unsnap around the middle under the rubber? Ed
  4. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, if you can find those instructions I'll give it a try. Thanks Ed
  5. I have a Garmin eTrex Venture, about a year and a half old. Sometimes when I turn it on all I get is black vertical lines on the screen. The unit is in very good condition otherwise, not even dropped to my knowledge. Is this a known problem, and has anyone had this and been able to fix it? Thanks Ed
  6. We're just starting only got a few under our belts. But, the "Girls" we refer to are a 100# malamute mix female and a 40# cocker mix. I'll tell you nothing has snuck up on us anywhere we have been with them. Many people are wary of a big dog that looks like Nikki. We or I should say I had a concern today. We were at Nestor Lake at the cache when there was gunfire across the lake. Across being about 150 yards maybe. Not knowing which way they were shooting was a big concern.
  7. OK so yesterday I took and laid out our first cache. I used my new Garmin Venture, made 4 approaches to the cache to get a reasonable location. The first vistitor said that the coord were a bit off. So, today I took my Garmin and a Magellan GPSII and set them side by side in the back yard. Here are my results: Garmin: N43 37.992 W084 13.596 Magellan: N43 37.983 W084 13.592 Both were set for Magnetic north and a variance of 7 degrees. So the question is: How much does this matter in the Geocaching scheme of things and am I tilting at windmills? Thanks for getting me hooked on this stuff! Ed
  8. I have just recieved a used GPS II. I think I have most of the basics mastered, but I do have a couple of concerns. I was running down the highway and was tracking nicely, when all of the sudden the screen stopped updating. Not just the direction, position, everything stopped. Even the TTIME and local time. None of the buttons would work either. I had to remove the batteries to get it work again. The other thing is it will take 20 - 30 minutes to orient itself. I have a Magellian 2000 and it only takes a couple of minutes. The software on the GPSII is 2.06. Is this the latest (couldn't find anything at the Garmin site) and if not how is the unit updated? I know I need a serial connection, just what software and all. Thanks Ed
  9. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, does anyone have a diagram to make a serial cable for this GPS? I found the round connector for $5 online and I have several DB9 connectors hanging around. Thanks
  10. Hi I am having some difficulty figuring out how to enter coord. into this thing. I can get to the Create Landmark screen. I understand how to enter the coord, but my unit won't allow certain numbers. Say I want to enter 42.98538 I can get in the 42 but itwon't let me enter anything higher than 5 for the 1st 9 in the coord. I have my unit coord. set for Deg/Min.MMM. I have tried using the other Coord settings without any luck. I also seem to be unable to enter no more than 6 digits. Do I have a bum unit? Oh yeah I have it setup for WGS84 Thanks
