  1. If you are located in the Pacific Northwest, check out NorthWest Trails
  2. The newer models are no longer fully compatible with the now discontinued Mapsource. However you can still manually grab the "userdata.gpx" file from the /Garmin/Gpx/ folder and open it manually in mapsource. You will also see the waypoints saved in their own gpx file based on the date they were saved in that same folder, example:" Waypoints_25-NOV-11.gpx" would contain any created today, and mapsource will open them if you point it in the right direction.
  3. My recommendations... Buy a newer model Garmin as appropriate for your budget. Dakota 20 Etrex 30 Oregon 450 or 550 w/ camera Gpsmap 62s or 62sc w/ camera Montana 600 or 650 w/ camera The order of that list sort of increasing in price....sort of. With Black Friday approaching the chances of you getting a great gps for cheap is very good. I would wait till tomorrow at 12.00 EST to see what Gpscity has on sale. Last year they had the Oregon 450 for $229 Here is a comparison of those first 4 models listed. http://www.gpscity.c...x30&oreg450 Basically decide if you want a touchscreen or just buttons. Touchscreen: Dakota, Oregon, Montana. Buttons: Etrex, Gpsmap. For maximum useability, I would avoid the Dakota 10 (no sd card slot or baro/compass, wireless sharing/chirp ability), Etrex 10 (no sd, baro/compass, wireless sharing/chirp ability), Etrex 20 (no baro/compass, wireless sharing/chirp) If you want to do Wherigo caches, the only current model that still supports them is the Oregon line. I would do alot of research fast if you want a good deal this week.
  4. Totally agree with this. While the Vista is a decent unit, it would be like buying a new computer that comes with Windows 98 on it. Ok maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but you get the point.
  5. Any one else getting an incorrect font size for the new data fields on the nuvi screen as well as an odd title for the field? Here it is set for GPS Elevation *note it says select side for..... then the elevation in a large font. Then here when it is set to date it says Avoid U-turns? and the date font is much greater than the field Portrait orientation is no better, at least the field is titled correctly for the Odometer.
  6. Enable spanner mode: Setup--> System --> Interface --> Garmin Spanner
  7. There is a series of 72 caches in the Gold Country program here in BC. For every 24 finds you can receive a coin. Further links to details are on the cache pages http://coord.info/GC1V20G
  8. I believe it is for the x50 series not the x00 series oregons.
  9. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=143&compareProduct=30926&compareProduct=30925 That shows the differences, but to sum it up the 20 has everything the 10 does plus: Compass, barometer, wireless transfer between units (chirp as well) and a microsd slot. Personally I wouldn't even consider the 10 as the features of the 20 are so much better. But for just a couple bucks more you can usually find the Oregon 450 on a decent price. http://www.gpscity.ca/compare/oreg450&dakota20 Here it is only $20 more The Oregon adds 5000 caches vs 2000, bigger screen, Wherigo caches, NMEA output
  10. There are a few unlockables like backgrounds and compasses as you have described. Details can be found here.
  11. I know of many people in that area that would likely take you out on the hunt. You may get a better response if posted on the BC Geocaching associations forums.
  12. Try here for free maps. here is a link to the files for South africa
  13. I think Garmin may take offence at you calling the Magellan GC a Garmin.
  14. Seems to be sorted out. Sent a half dozen times between my 450 and Montana without issues.
  15. This is true of all newer Garmins. Basically Mapsource is a discontinued product, which they never updated for the new way that the garmins handle their waypoint list. Basecamp will display them and is the preferred (according to Garmin) application to use. If you want to see the waypoints, etc with Mapsource, just manually open up the current.gpx file which is found in the Garmin/Gpx/ folder of the unit.
  16. 1. Install fresh batteries 2. Make sure its turned off 3. Connect USB 4. Hold joystick up, menu and power button all together 5. Insert paper clip into the reset hole next to the USB plug and click it It should now show up as a drive on your pc and allow you to delete the offending files or perform a firmware update (current is 1.7)
  17. Thats basically what profiles are for. You can have different settings for each different usage. So basically in the auto profile you would have City Nav enabled and lock on road......etc, in the geocaching profile you would have a topo map enabled and track log on ....etc, whatever you like for each profile. Your assumption is exactly correct.
  18. Not to derail this topic, but do others agree that no EC should be rated less than a 1.5 for difficulty? I have seen a few ec's with relatively simple questions rated a 1 for difficulty. Just the fact that all ec's require answering questions and emailing those answers to the CO, I believe warrants at least an extra 1/2 point over say a traditional 1 difficulty conventional cache. No ec of mine will ever be rated a 1 difficulty no matter how simple the questions are. Back on topic, I would love to find a true d5 EC..... who am I kidding, I love to find any D# EC.
