  1. I was actually at the DeLorme store in Maine a couple of weeks ago visiting Eartha (the giant globe). I asked them about the NorCal book and was told that they have some left over 'in the basement' but couldn't sell them to me. I have an inquiry into DeLorme sales as well and will post if they do in fact have some and are willing to part with them.

...and thanks for the kind comments Find Waldo!

Now MotorBug, you need to put together an "Ice Cream and Milkshake Challenge Cache"...

  2. The Sacramento Rally Skool is now finalized and it is set up as an event cache to boot!!!

Take a look at GCN02Y "Rally Skool"

It will be held in a park outside of Penryn, CA (E of Sacramento on I-80), which will actually be more convenient for folks coming over the hill from NV. It will be a little bit different than the one in Reno with the Checkpoint happening first and the Route Navigation happening afterward. This was done so that you could have some fun navigating and end up in Sacramento around dinner time for the RCGDS event. Of course there is a fair amount of time between Rally Skool and the RCGDS Luau event, so you might want to do some caching along the way... . Through a series of coincidences, the selected Route that will take you through a few areas with a cache or two....

The Rally Skool event opens at 11:30 and closes to new students at 1:30. In order to claim Rally Skool as a find, you will need to complete the Checkpoint challenge within a fairly generous thirty minute window. To make it interesting, you will have to run around the park in a motorcycle helmet, goggles, riding suit and dirtbike boots (just kidding) . The limited time window will give the faculty a little time to do some caching after the event as well.

Hope everyone likes the setup. Feel free to drop me a note if you have any questions or comments!

  3. Also, as a 2004 GBES Rally alumnus, I have to say that this was the most fun caching adventure I've ever participated in. And that is despite the fact that I didn't even finish it last year (yes, I was the doofus who used the high-clearance one-wheel-drive vehicle in the event. :D ). If you have the opportunity to participate in this event, by all means do so!

  4. Not to steal any of the good Doctor's thunder, but Sacramento Rally School will be held on the 12th of March. I'm working with the Doc and a few of the GBES folks and rally volunteers to nail down the venue and time. An advantage of this day is that there is an RCGDS Event Cache being held the same day, which gives our NV brethren a chance to visit rugged Sacramento for some serious adventure caching! I'm suspect that Rally School will be held in the early afternoon to allow folk to do some caching beforehand or afterward. Stay tuned for details....

  5. What am I missing here?  I have the latest version of EasyGPS and it doesn't recognize my 60CS using USB.  I don't see that EasyGPS is compatible with USB yet.  Am I wrong?  Tell me how if not.  My version of EasyGPS is 1.3.7

There are a couple of other threads about EasyGPS and USB floating around as well.... take a look at "Software Like Easygps With Usb" (GPX files to Garmin Map76CS thru USB). I posted a note there about configuring in your GPSr and there may be some other useful info as well:

"Don't forget to make sure that you have configured EasyGPS to include your GPSr. With File->Preferences, on the My GPS Receivers tab, Click the Add GPS button and then find a selection for the 60CS (if you don't have it, you may need to update to a more recent version of the software like 1.3.7). When you have added that GPSr, you can check the Settings button as previously mentioned to use the USB interface. That option would be greyed-out for older models that don't support USB."

    Hope this helps!

  6. I would really appreciate it if someone would walk me through how you connect the Garmin 76cs usb connnection to EasyGPS.

I have a 60CS and EasyGPS v 1.3.7 which supports USB. Here's what you do to use USB.

Click on File up on the menu bar, then Preferences. Click on Setting and put a check mark in Use USB block.

Don't forget to make sure that you have configured EasyGPS to include your GPSr. That option would be greyed-out for older models that don't support USB.

  7. Got my 60CS in the mail today  :) but now cannot figure out which model I need to choose on EasyGPS....I can't find 60CS as an option.  Help!

I too am looking for the best software combination to use with my 60. :bad: Easygps does not support USB and using a beta version of expertgps I was not able to upload description of cache. Is it possible to go paperless with a 60 and no PDA?

Actually, easyGPS *does* support USB. Make sure you have the most current version and then when you configure in a new GPSr it will have options for the newer units like the 60CS. Then when you select that GPSr as a destination, it will have a checkbox for using the USB. It is a tremendous improvement when loading 1000 wpts....

    Have fun!

  8. On the bottom of your pocket query page there is a pulldown option to select .loc or .gpx files ("In the format". You can also request that the site compress the file before sending (the checkbox is "Compress files into *.zip format (recommended)"). This results in a smaller file being sent (which helps on a slower link), it also fixes a problem where some mail systems will block the .gpx attachments.....

Now go load up and have fun this weekend!

  9. OK, after a bit of research, I discovered 3.30 was the latest.  I downloaded it and got it installed sucessfully, despite having had a few cold ones before hand.

Garmin has released 3.40 on June 8th. If you'd like to keep on top of current versions, if you go to Garmin's Website and select the Support (Software Updates) pulldown, it will take you to a list of current versions for all Garmin SW. When you click on your particular unit, after you accept their terms & conditions, it will allow you to download the latest. It will also give you the option (in the upper right corner) of requesting email notification when new versions are released.

  10. Cool!! I hadn't realized that EasyGPS supported USB. I made sure that I had a current version, but didn't see USB info in the helpfiles. I found out that the USB support 'kicks in' when you install a GPS that has USB functionality (e.g. 60CS, 276C). At that point it includes a checkbox that says 'use USB'. I just loaded 1700 waypoints into my 276C in less than a minute, yum!!!

Looking at the gpsu homepage, it appears that it supports USB as well with the most recent version (10 May).

  11. It's good to hear other's experiences in this regard. I placed a bug in Washinton State on Memorial Day weekend. It moved a total of 7 miles and has been stalled since mid June. I sent a gentle inquiry and was told they had been busy and would place it shortly. It's been a couple of weeks, but I'll try to be patient for a little longer (since there's not much I can do anyway)....
