  3. Team MJDJ - Ummm... I believe I was one of those who 'injected his 2 cents' in the unfortunate thread that was locked... mainly to try and 'encourage peace and reason'. Even if I am not typing along with you, I am still part of the discussion, simply by reading it, and through my active involvement in geocaching.... as are many others. The main reason I contributed was because, as a geocacher I took offense to the tone and nastiness of the thread (and was actually embarrassed thinking of what people who are newer or less involved might think). I understand that this is not the topic of the original thread, but I must say - you do not OWN any discussion here... you do not own any thread here... complaining about ANYONE participating in a thread here (no matter what stage the discussion is at) does not sit well with me... and any discussion that you participate in here might run more smoothly if you got off your high horse.
  4. here-here, TT. I generally don't spend a lot of time on the boards, and threads like this are one of the reasons why. Team MJDJ, please do us a favour and walk away, at the very least from these boards. You are giving other cachers a bad name, and you are even discouraging potential cachers from joining the community. (Many of the other posts posts on this thread were pretty disheartening as well) ... so sad, and so immature... and what an example for your kids!?! These people VOLUNTEER, and put up with a lot as it is! give me a break, let it go, hide a cache somewhere else... and save your passion for things that are really important in the big scheme of things! as for geocaching... it's supposed to be FUN! If it's not, then do something else and don't ruin it for the rest of us!!
  5. Some more questions from hikers to the Banff info kiosks - ALL ELK related: 1 How do the elk know they're supposed to cross at the "Elk Crossing" signs? 2 At what elevation does an elk become a moose? 3 Tourist: "How do you pronounce 'Elk'?" Park Information Staff: "Elk" Tourist: "Oh" And here is a joke that might not be as popular with the guys:How to cross a river... One day three men were hiking along and came upon a raging, violent river. They needed to get to the other side, but had no idea of how to do it. The first man prayed to God saying, "Please God, give me the strength to cross this river." Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours. Seeing this, the second man prayed to God saying, "Please God, give me the strength and ability to cross this river." Poof! God gave him a rowboat and he was able to row across the river in about three hours. The third man had seen how this worked out for the other two, so he also prayed to God saying, "Please God, give me the strength, ability and intelligence to cross this river." And Poof! God turned him into a woman. He looked at the map, then walked across the bridge. And a more camping joke for the Lone Ranger fans: THE LONE RANGER.... The Lone Ranger and Tonto are camping in the desert, set up their tent, and are asleep. Some hours later, The Lone Ranger wakes his faithful friend. "Tonto, look up at the sky and tell me what you see." Tonto replies, "Me see millions of stars." "What does that tell you?" ask The Lone Ranger. Tonto ponders for a minute."Astronomically speaking, it tells me that; there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically ,it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What it tell you, Kemo Sabi?" The Lone Ranger is silent for a moment, then speaks. " Tonto, you Dumb a**, someone has stolen our tent."
  6. Thanks for the endorsement, Anne! Yes, I would be happy to help with this.... we started geocaching last February, and are still pretty active (I guess you could say 'very' active). We did quite a few caches in British Columbia last summer, including one at the top of Whistler. I also try to get as many as I can into my business trips - I have done a lot of caches in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and Michigan (among other states) this year. Lisa and I are also going to Africa (Zambia) in June and hope to do some in London on our daytime stopover on the way there, as well as one at Victoria Falls. I will send an e-mail in...
  7. Hey there! Welcome to geocaching and welcome to Burlington! My wife Lisa and I do live in Burlington, and it's a fantastic area for geocaching - lots of great trails nearby and a very active 'community'. If you are free next Saturday, you might want to check out the big event - 'Gnashers 02 - Tour of Cave Springs'. This would be a great opportunity to meet a lot of geocachers all at once, and learn a lot about the hobby (obsession for many) quickly. On another note, Lisa and I both travelled fairly extensively in Austrialia (me for 6 months in 1994, her for 1 year in 1997)! Hopefully we'll have the chance to chat soon! Kevin and Lisa - Purple Fever.
  8. Hey Steve - hope you have a great vacation! You picked a beautiful area to explore... You may want to put your request for help in a new thread - you are probably more likely to get the help that you need that way. Kevin - Purple Fever.
  9. Maybe some of you have seen some of these before, but I thought if anyone, this crowd would get a kick out of it... feel free to add some of your own! : -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actual Hiker Comments These are actual comments left last year on Forest Service registration sheets and comment cards by backpackers completing wilderness camping trips: "A small deer came into my camp and stole my bag of pickles. Is there a way I can get reimbursed? Please call." "Escalators would help on steep uphill sections." "Instead of a permit system or regulations, the Forest Service needs to reduce worldwide population growth to limit the number of visitors to wilderness." "Trails need to be wider so people can walk while holding hands." "Ban walking sticks in wilderness. Hikers that use walking sticks are more likely to chase animals." "All the mile markers are missing this year." "Found a smoldering cigarette left by a horse." "Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill." "Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests." "Please pave the trails so they can be plowed of snow in the winter." "Chair lifts need to be in some places so that we can get to wonderful views without having to hike to them." "The coyotes made too much noise last night and kept me awake. Please eradicate these annoying animals." "Reflectors need to be placed on trees every 50 feet so people can hike at night with flashlights." "Need more signs to keep area pristine." "A McDonald's would be nice at the trail head." "The places where trails do not exist are not well marked." "Too many rocks in the mountains."
  10. It would also be nice to have a $50K salary to offer for the position! I guess when AB started this thread, I though we were talking about a 'friendly association', a forum to compare notes, to share info, stories, and resources, and to hopefully have a web site like one of the ones I listed above... something like this one: http://www.alacache.com/ It seems like some of the discussion here is focussed more on the idea of a 'lobby group', which is a much different approach... I could be wrong, but my feeling is that the forming of a simple 'association' or 'club' or 'organization' with an initial president voted in by geocachers in a forum could be a solid first step. From there, I see different people in the Organization (GO perhaps) perhaps taking on different roles - promotions, govt liaison, administrative support, web site development, etc... My point is, that while communicating with the government, etc., on setting geocaching guidelines (or whatever else) could be a key role of an organization, I'm not sure it should necessarily be the focus, nor govt connections or 'knowledge of inner workings' a pre-requisite... at least not over the general idea of bringing cachers together in a positive way to enhance our enjoyment of the sport in Ontario! Happy New Year everyone!
  11. FYI, Keith Watson has set up a web site for the Golden Horseshoe area: And here is another list of web sites that was posted by a cacher named TheStosh who is starting a Central Tennessee Geocaching club:
  12. NICE WORK! Thanks for setting it up. If you are interested in beefing up your links to other club/organization sites (or if anyone else would like to see this list), here are a 'few' that I stumbled across in a post: Alabama Geocachers Association http://www.alacache.com/ Arizona Geocaching http://www.azgeocaching.com/ Arkansas State Parks http://www.arkansasstateparks.com/things/geocache/ Central Oregon http://www.cogeo.org/ Chicagoland Geocachers http://www.chicagogeocaching.com/ Florida Geocachers http://www.floridacachers.com/ Geocachers of Central Kentucky http://www.geocky.org/ Georgia Geocachers Association http://www.ggaonline.org/ GEOSET http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SETennGeocaching/ GPS Hawaii http://www.lightfantastic.org/gps/ Great Plains Geocaching http://www.gpgeocaching.com/ Great Plains Geocaching http://www.gpgeocaching.com/ Houston Geocachers http://www.houstoncachers.org/ Huntsville Area Geocachers http://www.hsvgeocache.us/main/index.php Idaho Geocachers http://idahogeocachers.org/ Indiana Geocaching http://www.indianageocaching.com/ Michigan Geocaching Organization http://www.mi-geocaching.org/ Middle Tennessee Geocachers http://www.mtgc.org/ Minnesota Geocaching Association http://www.mngca.org/ Mississippi Geocachers Association http://www.msga.net/ Nevada Geocaching http://www.nevadageocaching.com/ New England Geocaching http://ne.geocaching.com/ NY Geocaching Organization http://www.ny-geocaching.org/ Ozark Mountain Geocachers http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ozmtngeocachers/ Portland Geocaching http://www.pdxgeocaching.com/ River City Geocaching & Dining Society http://www.rcgds.net/ Southern California Geocachers http://www.scgeocachers.org/ St. Louis Area Geocachers Association http://www.geostl.com/ Texas Geocaching Association http://www.texasgeocaching.com/ Triad Geocachers http://groups.yahoo.com/group/triadgeocachers/ Triangle Area Geocachers http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TriangleGeocachers/ Tulsa Area Geocachers http://www.members.cox.net/geocache/ Utah Geocachers http://www.utahgeocachers.com/ Utah Geo-Club http://www.cachunuts.com/ Washington State Geocaching Association http://www.xsnrg.com/geocachingwa/ Wisconsin Geocaching Association http://www.wi-geocaching.com/ 100+ more clubs on Yahoo Groups http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=geocaching
  13. Wow... quite a thread! Thanks for starting it off, AB. Everything you've said makes sense to me. It's a shame that some want to turn a positive thing into a big ball of negativity by promoting their own agendas, or perhaps by just... feeling the need to be negative, all the while standing on the sidelines.... This is a GOOD thing, and the fact that people have stepped up should be COMMENDED! Anyways, I like "GO". I don't think a physical 'meeting' is needed at this point - you are just going to end up excluding a lot of people who can't make it from Ottawa or Windsor, or Kincardine, or wherever, or who can't make the particular day. BQ volunteered to organize things (and possibly lead), and I fully support that. I have met him at an event, we've e-mailed back and forth a fair amount about eachother's caches, etc., and I have read his recent level-headed, intelligent, and sensible posts. I think it's great that he's stepped up, and I think he's probably an ideal person for the 'job'. Although he will have a great deal of support, this is going to be quite a lot of work (which I believe he understands), and it says a lot about him that he is willing to take it on. If you don't know him, check out his fantastic multi-caches and read some of the comments... or read through his forum posts... or e-mail him! He's a stand up guy with a solid understanding and appreciation of geocaching that is contagious! I could be wrong, but Ford001Dude seems bitter because HE wants to be THE MAN, and that dream is slipping away. Based on this thread, I would have a very hard time supporting GM100guy in any sort of leadership role... Rules of Order? Demeaning newbies (some might consider you one, based on the number of caches you have actually done)? Wanting to shut things down when things are not going your way? Posting and e-mailing under a cloak of secrecy? Definitely not indications of a leader, or even someone that I would want to put any sort of trust into. All this demanding of mission statements and meetings and order and politics by a couple of people would be enough to drive many lesser men or women to throw up their arms and say forget it.... Thankfully that has not happened, and the Blue Quasar is still holding strong. A Blue Quasar is one that is coming towards us - the light waves are pushed together, making the colour go towards the high 'Blue" end of the spectrum. Blue Quasar is also coming towards us and bringing us together, as opposed to tearing us apart. He also can bring us down to earth (as a blue quasar could be doing), and I like his approach - 'Let's start by getting a web site up!' and going from there... a nice simple start, yet a solid and positive step. Every detail doesn't need to be arranged before it starts. From getting to know many in the geocaching community in the past months, I KNOW that those with a positive contibution to offer will step up and this whole project will develop and grow and flourish.... From being a manager at my work, and leading many meetings and initiatives, I also know that red tape, personal agendas, and negativity can slow things down, but maybe more importantly - discourage people with valuable skills and initiative from contributing. There are ways of moving forward in an encouraging and positive manner, even if you disagree with a point. I LOVE geocaching, and I am so glad that I discovered it. A web site sounds like a fantastic first step, and Blue Quasar seems like a perfect first leader. THANK-YOU BQ for standing up, and AB for taking the process a step forward, and to all of the geocachers in the area for the caches placed and found, the positive and constructive comments, and for being ambassadors of geocaching!! Now, as far as I can see, Blue Quasar is leading the voting. If any one has another candidate to nominate, then please do so by January 4th.
  14. BQ - Sounds great, and thanks for stepping up. Setting up a local organization makes the most sense to me... a smaller group will enable people to be more involved and to 'connect' better as a group... and that it could focus on local issues, which would make the whole thing much more meaningful for everyone involved. Never mind the fact that it is only Ontarians that seem to be talking about this right now, at least here. It may be presumptuous to call it a 'Canadian Association' when it is really Ontario. The other provinces can follow suit if and when they see fit. I think it'll be stronger this way, not weaker. Thanks again for the ideas, and the initiative, and I would love to part of any positive organization of geocachers.
  15. HERE, HERE. WELL SAID. Say what you will Les, but the appearance is that you are trying to singlehandedly destroy geocaching in this area. This is a hobby that is getting MORE people out on the trails, MORE people cleaning parks and paying their park or trail fees, MORE people being healthy and active (including children), MORE potential volunteers, and MORE advocates of hiking and the beautiful trails and parks in the area.... and therefore should be encouraged, not stifled. Watching some of the best caches around be archived is extremely disheartening. Why not be happy people are out USING these trails and therefore helping to make sure that they are there for years to come? Yes, we do have a responsibility, as humans, to take care of nature... our responsibility, though, is ALSO to ENJOY it.
  16. Yes, thanks a lot! Feel free to e-mail me with any questions or anything that I may be able to help with! I LOVE geocaching and want to help make sure that it is around for a long time... And thanks for your reply as well, Les. Why don't you get yourself a GPSr for Christmas and join us - nothing like geocaching to keep you out and active through the winter!
  17. Les - I'm all for safe caching... this one wasn't too bad, but yes, this one has potential to be dangerous and if the powers that be want it moved for safety, then I would not complain. Also, I respect the rights and opinions of 'land owners' and want everyone to get along! It is also a fantastic spot, and comments here seem to be be mainly suggesting that JARS move it further from the cliff or try to convert it to a virtual cache. A virtual cache could involve simply getting to the platform, which IS safe. It was more your posts that made me want to reply. I just thought it funny that you suggested putting the cache in a completely different spot for safety reasons, when you don't even know the spot in question! I also wonder why it says 'Geocacher' under your name (and why you talk like such an authority) when you have ZERO logged finds or hidden caches. Why have you taken it upon yourself (it seems, and you haven't replied to that question) to involve the HCA and ??? when you don't seem to be a participant in the sport? I have barely posted here at all (although I am an active geocacher), but I felt compelled to write when I saw that.... I am just wondering what your great interest here is? Is it personal safety? landowner rights? or something else?
  18. Ummm... I was just reading the Parks Ontario thread started by Cache-tech, and I was wondering if Les actually is the one who got the HCA involved!? Based on his note there it seemed like he is in contact with them. Les, who are you? and why are you so involved here when you DON'T actually GEOCACHE!? and did you wake the 'sleeping dog', as res2100 referred to them?
  19. give me a break, Les.... there's a lookout platform with rails. The last time I was there someone was in a wheelchair! Why tell them to put it somewhere else if you don't even know the spot being discussed? Maybe it could just be moved a few more metres away from the edge of the cliff, but near enough so that the falls are in view? It would be a shame to not have that cache at or very near there.... as a physical or virtual. And Les - that part about there being a 'cliff'...? Should we just stay away from the escarpment altogether, and maybe even ALL great views, because most have a dropoff nearby!? Too bad, though, and I hope the authorities don't go too crazy... I didn't feel nervous at all going for this cache... Now, that 'Webster's Falls Cache' on the other hand - THAT'S dangerous. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and I'd love to see that one gone. Doing it was one of the dumbest things I have done caching...
  20. Too bad the cache featured in the article went missing the day the article came out... coincidence? I bet someone reading the article figured it out by the clues and the pictures... what a shame. That writer contacted me as well, I guess because I did that cache recently, but I was away. Geocacher
  21. my first time on the forum...Wow there is a lot of stuff on here and lots of people writing in! I like the hand signal, I'll give it a go up here in Canada. Cheers, Purple Fever Geocacher
