  1. I was listening to the PodCacher Podcast the other day and they said that it was common practice apparently in Europe ( if I remember right, someone correct me if not.) to leave a First To Find certificate in every new Cache. I thought that was an excelent idea and it would look wicked in a Journal to have some pictures of the area and the cache and a FTF certificate if you earned it in a journal to spark the memories later. http://www.podcacher.com/ GeoGargoyle
  2. How do you add an entry to your personal T-Bug to an archived cache? Glisson
  3. I loved Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, Digital Fortress was a good one though not quite a Da Vinci Code. Snow Crash is my all time Favorite. Crytonomicon is an excellent book too. I still need to go back to Zodiac and In the beginning... I have a 1 hour commute to work and fly once or twice a month as well. Audiobooks are my saving grace. Premium member at Audible.com for $20 a month I get 2 novels. Can't beat that deal. Quite time for me only happens on the road as it would seem. Download a book or two to my PDA and hit hte road. Much better than the crap that is on the radio over and over and... GeoGargoyle
  4. Nailed our first FTF Friday! Yea Baby. Then Saturday we made a 2 1/2 hour drive to hit 3 more in SE Kansas. 4 FTF's in a row. I'm En Fuego baby. I got to wondering. Is it wrong to activly target caches in hopes of getting a FTF? The other 3 we actually targeted for Travel Bugs that I thought I'd take out of town with me next week. People freak around here anymore with 3" of snow and here we are out Geocaching in it! That was our first Snow Cache. ( Like that Stephenson fans? ) GeoGargoyle
  5. I recently changed mine as I wanted to pep it up a bit. I was formerly just "Glisson." Now I have changed to GeoGargoyle. I used to always wear Gargoyles sunglases, yes before Arnold did in Terminaor. I also collect Gargoyle and Dragon figurines. My race car driver was Dale Earnhardt. I now like his son. Dale wore Gargoyles and Jr. drove for them for awhile. I also like the definition of Gargoyle as used in Neal Stephensons cyberpunk novel "Snow Crash." You can see the def here. Snow Crash Dictionary I always have some sort of computer near me and am gadget crazy. It all just seemed to fit. GeoGargoyle
  6. OK. Sorry but the search engine hated my key words. I want to come up with a new username for myself. Glisson is kinda plain as far as usernames goes. If I do change it will my stats follow me? Will the cache pages that I have visited be updated with the new name on my logs? Thanks for the help, Glisson ( for a little while longer anyway )
  7. That got it. I had the lat / long format wrong. It is working like a charm now. thanks for the help. Glisson
  8. I have been looking and can't find a good description of how to get my .gpx file exported as pushpins for Streets and Trips 2002. I can get them to pocket streets with GPS Babel but it doesn't seem to export to the S & T 2002 .stp extension. What am I not doing or am I doing wrong? Glisson
  9. I have been scouring the boards and have had no luck. Can you walk me through taking a .gpx file in Utopia and making pushpins for S & T 2002? I am going nuts trying to get this to work. I can get info from GPSBabel to create pocket streets pushpin files but I have had no luck with creating .stp files with GPSBabel. I would really like to do this. Glisson
  10. I'm a Wichita cacher. Just got started in Feb of this year. We are haveing a great time! Be sure to come to the event mentioned above. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=60498 Shane The Evil Twin is setting it up. Be sure to add a note to the cache page and let him know if you are comming so they know how many to plan for. How to see you there. Welcome to the addiction! To live in fear is not to live.
  11. I've never been to an event and am looking forward to my first on the 27th here in Wichita, KS. Shane the evil twin is setting things up and is one of the areas driving forces behind the sport in Wichita. I was wondering though, if 30 people show up and there are 3-4 new caches to do. How do you keep people off of one another's back while searching for the new caches? Take turns? To live in fear is not to live.
  12. I too like to see the kids face when they open the "treasure chest." I like the trinkets too. I too keep all my found loot. It's my caching scrapbook. I try to trade fairly and often leave extra goodies in caches to "round it out." Sure the thrill tends to be in the hunt but I enjoy the surprise of what is inside as well. It's the Crackerjack theory of caching. I have yet to see any real "signature" items. One person around here says they always leave glowsticks. Fine, cool. I'm trying to find my own sig item to begin leaving too. Looks like I was too late with the AOL cd thing. Dang. That was a great idea. 8) If everyone left more expensive items AND everyone left better then they took we would soon be finding Durangos and Harleys in the caches. Did anyone really expect to find anything really valuable? My son did, and does every time. hard to disappoint a 4 year old when he's finding hidden treasure. I'm with the others, if you don't like the trade part of the game, Log and leave i guess. But don't spoil our fun in the process. Heck, I just started! Hell the best thing my son found was a pocket knife which most think is taboo. It was his first and he is only allowed to carry it while caching but he loves it. That one item from our first cache has impacted all later caces as he gets to carry his knife like a man when he goes caching. We have found good and bad but we are having a great time. 13. It is hardly weight oriented. I had 2XL and 2 S shirts. 1 GEO sticker, 1GPS sticker, 8 CITO bags, and a Travel Bug. $25.00 + 15.00 shipping. I removed the Travel Bug and shipping went to $7.00. That must be one heavy bug. And yes, I kept the shipping the same on both orders. I guess I'll have to ge the TB later. I NEED those shirts though. Thanks guys for getting this together. Great price on the shirts. I would be ok to pay more for the shirts and get better shipping rates somehoh. That way it keeps more cash at Groundspeak. To live in fear is not to live.
  14. I personally don't like to know what is "supposed" to be in a cache. I do log what I take and then mention I replaced with a new item. More exciting that way to me I guess. Never know what you will find and often they are out of date as was mentioned. To live in fear is not to live.
  15. I am trying to do the cache Where's in a name. I was wondering if there are any cachers in the Milan area who would be willing to help me out and log a cache for themselves at the same time? Here is the site. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=12627 My caoord I am looking for is N 45 47.76 It can be anywhere for the Lon but this will run a line through the Milan area and I thought it would be cool to have one from there. Thanks for the help, Glisson glisson@cox.net To live in fear is not to live.
  16. Send me a pic of the unit if you can. If rag-a-muffin doesn't want it I might. My e-mail address is glisson@cox.net. To live in fear is not to live.
  17. On the cache page there is a spot that says use this waypoint. It is usually in this format GC2286. What is this and how do I use it? I have been entering all my coords in in N 37 38.676 W 97 26.902 format. I'm not sure how to use the waypoint infor or how to convert it to a format I can use. Thanks Glisson To live in fear is not to live.
  18. I'm having a blast with this. Scored a cache today and hooked up my PDA to my cell phone and logged my find from the truck before I left to hit another! Who's a gadget geek? Oh. That's right. I am! Querries and GPXview make this much eaiser to handel things in the field though. Glisson To live in fear is not to live.
  19. I signed up last night as a paying member here at Geocaching.com and I now have access to pocket Querries. This is awesome! Sent preferences and the file is e-mailed to you. Just import that file to GPXview and you have a nice list of all the caches that met your search. It also exports these locations as MS S&T pushpins. GPXview has a nice look and works great. I didn't understand why it wouldn't work before. You must be a paying member to get the GPX file it needs to view the data on your PDA. Glisson To live in fear is not to live.
  20. There is also GPXview. It runs on your pocket PC 2002 device and exports MS Streets and Trips pushpins directly. The key is you can only get the raw GPX info you need by becomming a charter member here on Geocaching.com. You can then set up what search criteria you are after and the info is e-mailed directly to you! Just import to GPXview and you can review the complete cach info ( like the web page! ) and export all the caches in the file to a Pushpin for MS S & T. GPXview can be found here.GPX View Let me know if you need more help, Glisson To live in fear is not to live.
  21. Don't feel bad, I started this and I'm lost. I think you might like Vito Navigator. Not a map program but a GPS coordinate program. Once your CF GPS gets a lock it gives you all the standard crap. Number of sats, signal strength, location, current coordinates etc. it will also let you enter your own waypoints ( the coordinates of a cache lets say ) and then show you a "compass" with a line pointing towards the location of said waypoint. Check out the demo at http://www.vito-tech.com/products/?prod_id=9 I have mapopolis and couldn't find where to enter waypoint coordinates at just now but seems like I did it once. I also use Ostia software and can't really recommend it at all. It came with my Pharos CF GPS unit. For in city use I recommend Microsoft Pocket Streets. Version 2001 is free from MS but 2003 is less then $30 and often has a $10-20 rebate. Then you will have all the maps for the US on cds and can cut your own map at will. If you get the free version you can request maps here. http://zodfalcon4.tripod.com/maps2002/index.html From what I have read your card should be a great unit. How does it perform in your car? Mine does pretty good but plan to get teh external antenae to let the PDA sit in a more natural position for viewing. Good luck and let me know if you find any apps that work well with your setup or have any more questions. Glisson To live in fear is not to live.
  22. What does a fela have to do to get pocket queries? Sign up as a card carrying member? I think that I got some of what you said but won't know till I try some stuff. Can I load several caches together to make one big fat file of pushpins this way? Can I have more than one set of pushpins in my directory labeled Pheonix? Thnaks, Glisson To live in fear is not to live.
  23. OK. Let's try this for the GPD impaired. namely, ME! I have EasyGPS, GPS2html,GEOclipping, GEObuddy, CacheFinder, GPS Babel, OZI GPS, and GPXview which is for Pocket PC 2002. I am not using an external GPS. I am using a CF GPS card on my PDA. I want to download the easyGPS info on cache pages and use it to create waypoints in PocketStreets 2002. I would prefer to do this without haveing to create new maps continually. Basically just adding pushpins to the database. Possible? It would be super cool if you could surf to the cache page while in the sync cradel and select the cache page and the prog strips the info right from your Pocket Internet Explorer page and creates a new pushpin. Yeah, and Ed McMahann might stop by with some good news. I tried downloading the EasyGPS info, running it through EasyGPS and saving it as a GPX file. I then transferred it to my PDA and tried opening it with GPXview. My PDA gave me the same look you guys are now! Oh well. If anyone has 1. Any idea what I'm taliking about. ( I'm not even sure anymore) 2. Mastered this process. 3. Likes working with people with a 6 year old's intellect. ( probably spelled that wrong lol) 4. Speaks fluent TechnoNeanderthal 5. Loves a challenge. and 6. Has nothing better to do. I would sure appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks, Glisson I found the cache. Now I just need to find a clue! To live in fear is not to live.
  24. OK. I have read seveal posts and just keep confusing myself. I am using a Pocket PC and a Pharos CF GPS card. I have Pocket Streets 2002, Mapopolis, & Ostia. I want to load a map of my city and load say, 20 waypoints to show other caches in the immeadiate area while stalking my current prey. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I seem to only be able to load/choose one waypoint at a time. Is this right? If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for other PPC/GPS software please shout it out! Glisson To live in fear is not to live.
  25. Thanks. I had lost that link and have been going crazy! I forgot that there was no update for Pocket Streets though. Bummer. Thanks again, Glisson To live in fear is not to live.
