  1. I believe that most of his more distant caches are his older ones. A reviewer somewhat reigned him in by insisting on what became known around here as the "KB Circle"... a 50 mile radius from his home. If I was limited to 50 miles from my house I would not be able to place many caches in high cacher density areas! It's farther than that to the closest Home Depo!
  2. To add my opinion: If I am "power caching" I will not bother with any hide that has even one DNF. If I am just out for a causal day I will only avoid looking for a cahe it has more than 3 DNFs. Occasionally I will really search for one with multiple DNFs and if I can satisfy myself that it is truly not there I will send a "needs maint" note. If an owner receives multiple DNFs or the find ratte drops it is probably a good idea to check on the hide. Happy caches!
  3. First I applaud your efforts to give due consideration to this thread and your time to looks at my hides. Having said that there is always a story behind hides that are not apparent to those who have not visited them personally. Of the 3 hides you refer to one is a hide that was constantly muggled so I abandoned the idea of that hide. Another was in a tree that mother nature eliminated. The third was also eleminated when a record wind storm destroyed that portion of the tree it was hidden in. Now consider that two of those hides are in a forrest mear where I currently have my residence and were slammed by record winds and weather. The other is within 150 miles of where I live and only 5 miles from where I useded to live and 10 miles form 3 of my daugeters residences (the hide that kept getting muggled). Interestingly the caches I have placed in Montana and Canada and are seldom near (although I have support system in place for but never needed) are still going strong with finds. Thanks again for your efforts and comments.
  4. I am frequently on the road for many months at a time. I have seen many areas with all too many caches. I have also seen areas that are away from population centers with no caches that are crying out for a cache hide. I bring with me various supplies to provide repair to unmaintained caches, however, I often lament that I am unable to place new hides of my own in spots that so obviously are perfect for one. Because I am not "local" to any one area I can not engineer new caches and enjoy the experiences of others attempting there discovery. Why should I not be able to enjoy a major part of geocaching because of my life style? Should I attempt to place a hide in one of these prime locations? It is unlikely that I would be able to revisit these hides without months passing. However, I see no difference between that and the hundreds of ill cared for caches that I have found which are not being kept in good condition by their "local" owners. I recall having a problem placing a cache near my sister’s home and had to have her create a user ID to be the "local" co-owner so that there would be someone in the area with ownership care capability. Since she does not know where the caches are and has never needed to be called upon to service them that convention seems to be unnecessary. Based upon the above should I attempt to place caches as I travel? Will they be approved and if not what issues will I face in getting any approved?
  5. Just discovered thatmy Oregon 300 can find chirps. Well that begs the question, how do you know a cahce in your area has a chirp? Is there way to Pocket Querry them? For that matter where exactly are these Project APE caches that I can check a box for in a Pocket Querry? Then there is the Locationless (reverse) Cache?? I have never seen any of this in any Pocket Querries. Anyone know where they may be or how to find them in my area?
  6. I will be in the Orlando area, actually Apopka, after Thanksgiving for about a week. Anyone know of any Power Trails or "must find" caches in the area? Thanks!
  7. My friend just got an eTrex Legend H so he could start Geocaching with me. After a few attempts to find a good explanation of how to load Geocaches into his GPS we were both at a loss as to "how to". The Garmin pages talk aboutthat other geocaching site that I won't even look at. Anyone got any "how to" advise? Thanks, Confused Oregon 300 driver
  8. Virtual caches can be annoying. Having said that... I love Earth Caches! They shoud do a similar approach for Histoic virtuals, reviewers could assure the lame are excluded.
  9. The fact that we are discussing the potential of blame being placed upon someone is just another thing that is wrong with our society. First and foremost a person should be responsible for themselves. Don;t undertake anything that is not in your opinion safe even if someone else says it is. If you do you are the one responsible for the consequences. Having someone responsible for the safety of an activity removes the responsibility of the individual for their own safety. Life is not safe nor is it fair.
  10. KAXD4413 Break; break; I can;t believe I remembered my old call sign! LOL!
  11. Last year, while scaling a 5 foot raod cut to make a terrain 2 difficulty 1.5 find in a tree that was a post for a barbed wire fence, I slipped and cut my stomach. The wound was about 8 inches long and bled profusely, but I was more concerned about the rusty nature of the barbs that caused the cut. Although you can not tell by my typing, no "lock jaw" resulted, got a cool scar though! This year a good friend found a terrain 3.5 cache and hopped down from a picknick table and is now recovering from a compression fracture of his 12th vertibre . Geocaching can be dangerous! So I was wondering.... Are there any good "Short" stories out there where an injury was incurred while Geocaching. Please list your injury and the terrain and difficulty of your find attempt. Oh and please don't whine! This may be oneof those guy things! You know...my scaris bigger than your's, kind of like on Jaws! I'd like the girls to not be shy about there adventure here as well! Happy caching! Oh, and safely too!
  12. Let the fun continue…. Caching for numbers is not geocaching? If you think its not then just go out and make finds but don’t log them. How many of you that object to the counting of numbers know exactly how many you have found and included it in your posted messages in this thread? If you were not concerned about numbers then why is the ET so upsetting? You can always add to your profile that you do not “Power Cache”. In reading many of these posts it is remarkable how you can substitute other controversial topics of debate today, Micros caches, Vitruals, Lamp post caches, Democrats vs. Republicans, health care reform, Gay marriage, etc… Many have the same dogma: those who do “X” are wrong or it’s immoral…. Or the other group does this and they are the reason the “it” is screwed up, do it our way and everything will be better. Know what? Sometimes different is just that. Different. It isn’t necessarily better or worse. The perception of reality is relativistic as everyone has their own unique view. My 2 cents: If you find a cache container and have in some way left evidence that you had found it, either by signing it or putting on a sticker, then you can log a find. I use stickers whenever possible, as my wife points out, no one can read my writing and half the time I don’t know what date to write anyway.
  13. I have tried to creat an Earthcache in Glacier National Part in Montana. Observing the requirement of having a "Land Manager" approve the cache I contacted the office at Glacier National Park and was advised that I could have an Earthcache at the desired location if I purchased a "Special Use Permit" which carries a $50.00 annual fee. I though that the NPS is a partner in Earthcache.org? Shouldn't that mean that they understand and support Earthcaches without renumeration? Any good advise or publication or ruling to provide to the "Land Manager" to helo get approval?
  14. So here is the plan: Find the closest Home Depo to the E.T. Hire as many illegal Aliens as will fit in the car safely. Drive the route and have the Aliens find the E.T.s. (Thanks to MM32 for the idea) Workable? Seriosly though. Sometimes it's about the numbers. Some players are purests and if left to them caches would only be hidden 10 miles out in the boonies and be the size of my Grandfather's Buick and overflowing with swag. Others would be looking for a plastic fly in a garbage dump. Then there is the ever popular micro in a bush. Point is there are many ways to play the game. Personally I like the E.T. and plan to give it a go as soon as I can figure out how to get there.
  15. I recently completed a series of caches to best my personal record for caches found in a day. In discussing this with the cacher that placed the series I found out about the E.T. series in Nevada that starts with GC2551A "E.T. 001" and goes for about 1000 caches in the string. Anyone know of any other great cache series? If so please post the string name, the area it is located near, the number of caches in the string and the stating GC so we all can share in the joy!! Sometimes it is about the numbers!
  16. Is there any cool suggestions about formatting the text within a listing?
  17. I also kind of agree with what both of you have said particularly on the GPS accuracey issue but I remain concerned about the dispaerency of the pricing. $9.95 for lifetime (or product life cycle) access to unlimited information. vs. $30.00 for restricted access to information. I guess if I brought my PC with a wireless cell bassed receiver I could continously do look ups but that again must demonstratesthat a Premium membership is not required. I suspect the the majority of the GS customer base does not hjike in the woods and would not see any issues related to GPS accuracy.
  18. I went to dinner tonight with some friends where we discussed Geocaching. My friends have over 2500 finds and a Garmin 60csx and I was sporting my new Oregon 300 with North American map load and downloaded caches. To my surprise they told me that they were abandoning their Garmin 60csx in favor of their IPhone with the Geocaching app. The IPhone app could give them a list of nearby caches anytime they clicked. They said that they are driving around and when they stop they click to get a list of caches in the immediate area replete with descritpion and last 10 logs. Descripion and last ten logs are, as we all know, much more importan than the accuracy of your GPS for most cache hides. While this IPhone app sounds great the real kicker is that they do this as many times as they want all for a $9.95 one time app fee. Hmmmmm, lets see I pay $30 a year and am limited to a small number of PQs in a givin time period . Anyone know why the Premium Members are charged $30 a year for limited information and IPhone users get unlimited access for $9.95? Then there is the question of just how much these IPhone queries are sapping GSs bandwith. I also am concerned as having just went through the GE KML loss issue and finding out how cumbersome and time consuming manipulating caching along a route is. Not to mention how slow I found the site while manipulating these routes. Unforunately I live in an area where AT&T can not provide a signal and am likely to continue my Premium Membership because of it. But I have to tell you if I lived in the city and had an IPhone there would be no Premium Membership for me. Who would have thought that just after purchasing my Gamin Oregon costing nearly $500 with maps that I would feel how cumbersom and outdated it was because of the IPhone. Anyone got any thoughts?
  19. Sad part is the Moderators have zero control or influence over what can or may be done. It would be interesting to understand what (if any) is the escallation path for an issue that arrises in this game. Clearly there are many users that are very unhappy with no recourse but to rant to Moderators of a Forum who should be commended for their efforts but have no real capability to help resolve this situation. How about someone who has more responsibility than Moderating this board come and say something? In some of my earlier messages I have been more hostile due to being stripped of my favorite feature, for that I aplogize. I have to say, however, that I'm becomming much more frustrated by what appears to be a lack of concern by GS. I understand it is easier to let the Moderators handle the issue until it slowly fades away. But I caution GS to learn the lessons of many other business that have ignored it's customer base. In the short term it may be a fiscally responsible decision that will come back to bite you in the wallet! BTW I am an Administrator on 2 forums, a webmaster for one web site, and a moderator on 2 other forums. The issue here is that lack of interest by GS as preceived byt the customers expressing their opinions in the thread. Viva the 200! May they eventually get their issue heard!
  20. This is the narrow view which demonstrates their lack of understanding. I don't want to cache for numbers.... I want to go somewhere that looked interesting, then find a cache. I want to sit at my laptop (which has absolutly no problem running GE with KML, 10 other web windows and a host of other programs without running slow) and find someplace that looks interesting and go there. "I am quite happy with the many other planning tools which existed prior to the Google Earth option or which have been developed since then" Bloody good for you but this isn't your personal web site it's sold to it's customers! Listen to them! Don't tell us what you like, we don't care. There seems to be a lot more of us than you.
  21. Sorry to take so long responding to this Raine...... I've been trying to plan my next caching holiday and find it frustrating. I'm glad I purchased a Gamin Oregon ao I can just cashe for numbers rather than planning an outing. Cache for numbers? I wonder how long I'll do that? I liked how I could look to find an area to cache that was interesting, now I just might cache while I'm out. If the reaon for not having the network link to GE was server load then not geocaching should solve the problem. I hope you succed in finding something else, The more difficult Geocaching is the less people will do it.
  22. NEVER! have I been a members of a group as small as 200! I loved the Cache feature in Google Earth and used it to recruit many new geocachers! I am very dissapointed by the sudden dissapearance of this vital tool !!!! I used it nearly every Cache trip I scheduled. Now that it is gone I'll have to load my next 10,000 mile 33 state trip one leg at a time and, and, and........ hassel !!! Not looking forward to it. I had always looked upon geocaching.com as a really supportive site, now? Shades of Ikariam if anyone knows the reference. Perhaps I missed the notification, I don't know. All I do know is that one of my favorite tools is gone! If server usage was the issue why not make it active to premium members only? Sales point? Oh, but there was that "only 200 people use it" reference. Now there is a phrase that belongs right next to: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman". Funny how numbers always support the position one is trying to put forth. I'm not trying to be insulting to those in charge and who put there time and effort into this wonderful product (I help pay for), but I spent enough time in the Silicon Valley to know BS numbers when I hear them. If this issue has been beat to death I'm sorry, but having just dicovered the loss of one of my favorite tools, I'm going through withdrawls! While I will remain a premium member I am very dissapointed by this loss of such a useful function!
  23. I am considering a new GPSr. I use a Magellan eXplorist 100 and have been wanting a unit that can be loaded by USB and has maps for quite some time. Friends loan me their Garmin 60CSx when we go geocaching as a group so I'm familiar with it's performance. I just played with an Oregon with the US map load and I loved it but I was not able to geocache with it. Sooooo. The question is.... Do I go after a Garmin 60CSx or an Oregon? Does the Oregon match the geocaching performance of the 60CSx? Christmas is coming so what do you think?
  24. The owner of a local Travel Bug Hotel looks at the inventory of the cache every now and then. He enters a "discovered" note for each bug that remains in the hotel and if there is a bug that is listed in the cache but has been gone for some time he e-mails the bug owner and the people who visited the cache since his last "discovery". While I don't think that kind of traffic is practical for the average cache owner, you just have to applaud this Travel Bug Hotel owner for going above and beyond the call of duty! Sonorazark! you know who you are!
  25. How long does a cache submitted for review typically sit in que before it is reviewed? I have had 2 waiting for a couple of days and just want to know that I didn't do something wrong when I submitted them.
