  1. Not working again. Same problem and symptoms as before.
  2. Seems to be working now. Thanks Groundspeak for fixing whatever the problem was.
  3. I'm using a badgebar from project-gc.com and a custom profile from mygeocachingprofile.com in the 'bio' space of my public profile, but now the user profile doesn't allow me to click through to either of those webpages. Worked fine before today.
  4. Interesting information about these types of containers here. I found this particular cache in Japan already, ironically. http://coord.info/GC3M0WQ
  5. Thanks for the experiment kunarion. I intend to get some 2 part epoxy and try to seal the bottle opening with a magnet inside. No torch required. I just used a cheap 100yen hacksaw to cut the bottletop off and I used a cheap 100yen diamond file to smooth out the base after cutting to make a flush surface. Most caches in Japan are of the urban style, so a small homemade magnet cache like this can be very practical. A fellow Japanese geocacher sent me this handy guide showing how he makes them: http://tinyurl.com/7y2bhlr and here's a photo of the work in progress by the same guy: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pggrgt81f3ybszf/IMG_2216%5B1%5D.JPG
  6. I live in Japan and I've seen a style of soda bottlecap container that's really clever. It’s similar to the containers that we can make in this thread: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=241368&hl=bottlecap%20magnet&st=0 However in Japan, people make containers with only one bottlecap and glue a magnet into the base of the cap and fit the container flush on a secret surface somewhere. Here’s some photos of one of these I found: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mk4n2zl5xn9xiyy/2014-04-02%2013.34.59.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/b2mdwmml6mtdgem/2014-04-02%2013.35.35.jpg I’ve even seen something similar for sale: http://www.shop4swag.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=247 But I want to make some of these. Here’s what I’ve made so far: https://www.dropbox.com/s/39ypxl48bpizdjp/2014-05-08%2012.28.41.jpg These seem easy to make in principle; get an empty soda bottle, cut the top off, file down the base so it’s flat and flush. In Japan I can get a pack of 8 small neodymium magnets for 100yen (about $1) But I don’t understand how to seal the opening in the base and add a magnet into it. What kinds of glue/epoxy/adhesive would you use to make one of these?
  7. Haha I've still got an old eTrex Venture (the green one) that I've cached with. Thing should be in a museum, though
  8. Oh I like this setup. Clever. Thanks for the screenshot, gonna use it next time I'm caching.
  9. I'm an American also living in Japan. Where do you live? I'm in the Kansai region. Just so you know, I've been to every Japanese electronics shop I can get to (Yamada, K's Denki, Kojima, Joshin, Bic Camera, Yodobashi, etc) and I have NEVER EVER seen a handheld GPSr on sale there. It doesn't seem to be something the Japanese people go for. They think a GPS is something only for cars or smartphones. Fortunately we know better. TKAPlanet sells Garmins, but they ain't cheap: http://tka.jp/?gclid=CI_GwszGy6kCFQPxbwodwBHNMg And as you know, the Garmin Oregon 450TC is horrifically expensive compared to its USA counterparts (warning: sticker shock) http://global.rakuten.com/en/search?st=&t=new&tl=0&t=new&k=garmin+450TC Amazon Japan also offers the English versions of Garmins like the Oregon 450, but as previously stated, no Kanji or Kana capability on those. And they're more expensive than what you could find from a US shop or eBay. So to sum up, you're NOT better off buying here in Japan. I suggest an eBay dealer that can ship from somewhere in Asia to Japan or get a friend to buy one from REI (Oregon 450 still on sale these days) and send it to you. And now, an endorsement: I've personally used the UUD map Rev2 and I'll be getting their new Rev4 maps when it's available. They offer a great product at a reasonable price (including a discounted price for map upgrades) and service in English. Their maps will work on the US versions of Garmin units as well. http://uud.info/en/map/
  10. Outstanding. I was gonna pull the trigger and get one this weekend elsewhere; now I'm gonna wait for this sale.
  11. If I get a Garmin Oregon or Montana, I want to import some photos into it and navigate to them. "Wow, where's that beautiful place? Let's go there!" Presto. Can the photos on Google Earth be geotagged and downloaded?
  12. I don't understand why Garmin doesn't provide a single software solution for mapping and communicating with its hardware. What can Basecamp do that Mapsource can't and vice versa? Related: I have Mapsource from an old Garmin Mobile 10 GPS that I use with other maps and of course I have Basecamp too. In the near future I may buy an Oregon or Montana. Will I need Mapsource at all? Or can I do everything with Basecamp only?
  13. Hello all, I've got a few questions about the Garmin Oregon and Montana. I'm looking to get a new Garmin unit to use in Japan with a map from this company: http://uud.info/en/map/ I plan to use this map plus experiment with some of the other free ones, but my primary map will be the UUD one. I have a large collection of Waypoints created with other older Garmin units. These old waypoints predate Basecamp (I was able to get them from my old version of Mapsource). I've arranged these into Basecamp (because it's free) with the intent to import them into a new Garmin unit and start fresh. But what about when I go to new places and make new waypoints? Can they be easily transferred back into Basecamp? I've heard this can't be done with the Oregon. How about the Montana? Thanks in advance
