  1. Well, if you just don't want to see it, take the SD card out of your Meridian and put it away (detail maps reside on the card only). If however, you want a different detail map, just upload it and it will replace the previous one. If you use a card reader, you can have multiple detail maps on the SD card, and use Card Utilities on you Meridian menu to switch between them. Just rename the detail map from the default to something descriptive.
  2. I bought one of the cheap ones on eBay, and it has worked just fine for me and my MeriGreen.
  3. 16MB of SD card space - $10 (max) 16 hours of wasted time and discussion - Priceless
  4. The 4.06 firmware is available at the Yahoo Meridian group, but you have to join to get access. Click here
  5. Northfinder is designed to be used when you are not moving. For those who cannot seem to find robertlipe's excellent Meridian FAQ page, here is his explanation of Northfinder: What is "Northfinder"? Unless you are moving (or have a unit like the Platinum that has an integral compass) the GPS doesn't know which way "North" is. You can prove this easily by punching in a GOTO and rotating the unit in your palm. The arrow rotates as the unit rotates. With Northfinder, a picture of celestial bodies (sun and/or moon) will appear on the outer edge of the rose. Rotate the unit to align the picture of the sun with the actual location of the sun. Now "north" on your screen actually points north and the arrow on the "compass" screen points to your GOTO destination.
  6. One other way to estimate/verify your altitude: I have a Meridian with Mapsend Topo. When on the map page, if you move your cursor to an empty spot next to your current position, it will show you the altitude based on the topo map loaded in the unit.
  7. Here is a little more information from the Cache Log Bookauthor's web page. There is a link for a screen shot slide show.
  8. I use GPS Utility for this precise purpose. Works great, and it's available as Freeware! (with limited capacity, but unlimited use)
  9. I mapped out our country property, including survey points, creeks and trails. As a bonus, I found out that my neighbor had planted a peach orchard on our property! YUM!
  10. I see that someone has just posted a new 4.06 firmware version for the Meridian. Also, there are 2 discussions going on concerning questions/problems with version 4.05. If you're moving up, I would go directly to 4.06.
  11. I bought one on eBay for $4.55. Of course shipping was $9! Here's a current auction on the same cable. It works great with my MeriGreen/Mapsend Topo/Winbook/XP Pro.
  12. Here's an article about 14 fishermen and snowmobilers being rescued from an ice floe in Lake Erie: article "The Coast Guard was able to more easily find the men because they had a global positioning system receiver, which allowed rescuers to track a satellite signal to their location." What kind of GPSr would that be? And do you think that the Coast Guard will be sending them a bill?
  13. If the SportTrak is like the Meridian (and I think it is), you can select the data shown at the bottom of the map screen. One of the options displays the street or topo feature (e.g. creek) that you are traveling along, as well as the upcoming cross street or topo feature.
  14. On the Meridian, you can select the level of detail to show on the detail maps. It's probably the same on the SporTrak. The options are: Lowest Low Medium High Highest I have mine set to High, which shows full detail up until I zoom out to 0.80 mile scale, when only the major roads are shown. At the next zoom out scale (1.60) the display reverts to the basemap, and only major highways are shown. At Medium, the display shows only major roads at the 0.40 scale, and the basemap comes back at the 0.80 scale.
  15. Here's one I found a while back: BUCKNER RESET I didn't realize at the time that these were accurate coordinates. I see that my Merigreen was about 10' off to the north and 5' off to the east and 5' off in altitude. Pretty darn close for a $100 unit, I'd say. Especially since I didn't hang around there too long.
  16. I might try that this weekend, when I will be with my s-i-l again. I did my firmware upgrade before they did theirs, so that might have something to do with it. I just hate to do a system reset, because it takes so long to get all the settings back to the way I want them.
  17. I have a MeriGreen, my son has a MeriGreen and my son-in-law has a MeriYellow. Their clocks are exactly together, mine is 56 seconds behind theirs. All 3 are running 4.03 firmware. This condition seems to be permanent, since it has been observed over a period of weeks. The lat/long readings, however are all together. How can this be?
  18. I don't know about the Garmins, but my Meridian has a feature called Northfinder. This is from Robert Lipe's excellent FAQ page, which I recommend that you read through: What is "Northfinder"? Unless you are moving (or have a unit like the Platinum that has an integral compass) the GPS doesn't know which way "North" is. You can prove this easily by punching in a GOTO and rotating the unit in your palm. The arrow rotates as the unit rotates. With Northfinder, a picture of celestial bodies (sun and/or moon) will appear on the outer edge of the rose. Rotate the unit to align the picture of the sun with the actual location of the sun. Now "north" on your screen actually points north and the arrow on the "compass" screen points to your GOTO destination.
  19. Here's a clip from the firmware update revision history, from gpsinformation.net -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meridian Gold Ver. 3.12 - 06/28/2002 - Software Enhancements/Fixes in Version 3.12 software: Added "Card Utility" menu to main menu (only displayed if card is present). This contains: • Load/save routes and waypoints from/to SD card. • Load/save track from/to SD card. • Delete file. • Change map. • Test card.
  20. Do you have Topo installed? If you use your Meridian for geocaching, that's the first software I would consider. It has the same street level mapping as S&D with the topographic features added. The POI's are different, however. Topo's are topo related, S&D's are not. The software actually resides on your computer, not your GPSr. You create maps on your computer, then download them to your SD card. The "firmware" on your Meridian does not change, just the map it retrieves from the SD card. As you zoom in, the newly created detail map takes the place of your base map. When you zoom out, it returns to the base map display. I understand that the new DirectRoute mapping software is restricted to a single GPSr, but Topo and S&D do not have that restriction. The maps you create on your computer can be downloaded to any number of Meridian or SporTrak units.
  21. There are actually 24 (27 counting backups) GPS satellites out there. They are in earth orbit, not stationary, so how many and which satellites you will pick up from your location is not a constant. Your GPSr can track a maximum of 12. See How Stuff Works for more information.
  22. I had to jump through hoops this past spring to get the rebate on my Meridian/Topo combo from wheresmyrebate.com. Calls to Magellan produced only more frustration. Actually calling the 800 # at wheresmyrebate produced results. I faxed copies (very important to keep copies!) of all the paperwork, and my denied rebate was approved and paid. On a related note, I have been tracking 8 more rebates being handled by wheresmyrebate for Fry's, Microcenter, and two other retailers. All were approved without problem, and 6 checks have been received. Plan on 8-12 weeks to get your money, though. I think it's interesting that the Magellan rebates are a problem, and others are not.
  23. The Mapsend Topo software is definitely worth the money. Don't look for pirated or used cd's when you can get a new copy for $84, or $34 if you qualify for the rebate. See this auction as an example.
  24. Magellan Mapsend titles are the only software that will load maps to your Meridian. Mapsend Topo is your best choice for hiking and geocaching.
