  1. Keystone: Many thanks for pointing me to the screen where I can create a waypoint… this will, indeed, allow me to accomplish what I was looking for. niraD: I agree with your statement… the added waypoint is visible (flag) only on the “Navigate to Geocache” map rather than the “Find Nearby Geocaches” map. Having a ‘car-waypoint’ set/clear capability which would be visible on the ‘big’ map would be, in my opinion, used by most cachers that leave their car and enter the jungle to follow their quest Thank you all who have replied… be safe my friends. 2. For those ‘challenging’ caches, it is often necessary to drive to the general area, park the car, and begin the trek into the ‘wilderness’ to begin the search. For those areas that are particularly dense, it can be ease to get a bit turned around and not be sure where the ‘car was parked’. May I suggest an additional functionality for the Geocaching app. where you can ‘set’ a ‘auto waypoint’ (with and appropriate car-type icon) once you park the car. This car-waypoint can then be ‘selected’ like any other cache on the map when you want to re-locate your parked car. Once you return to your car, the car-icon(waypoint) would be cleared. Additionally… it could be used when you park you car in one of the many parking areas that surround a large city mall… (and then exit out a different mall exit and wonder where why your car isn’t where you left it). Just a thought… I’ll let you guy kick it around and decide if it has merit. Zippes
  3. Although I didn’t specifically state it (and I should have)… what I was interested in was the percentage of Premium/Charter members in Geocaching.com rather than just the forums. (sorry for not making my query clear)
  4. I understand this would be a moving target... but, presently, out of the 400,092 registered members... how many are Premium? (Inquiring minds... and all of that)
  5. Jeremy and team, When logging a cache from your phone (WAP interface), you log in, define the cache name, indicate the type of Log your making and enter text in the log entry. May I submit, for you consideration, one additional ‘conditional’ page to following a successful logging of a Virtual cache. If the Geocaching server determines that the logged WAP entry was: 1) Virtual cache (based on the cache name) 2) “Found it” type log entry. … then an additional page will ask if the member wishes to send an email to the cache maintainer (which most always is what follows). You could prompt for the email text entry from the WAP and have the server send it to the cache maintainer use like using the home computer except all could be done ‘in the field’. I understand it’s much easier for us to think up things that ‘some else’ has to do… but if you think this idea has merit… I suspect folks would make use of the functionality if it were made available. Regards, Eric
  6. Understood... thanks Prime and Leprechauns... I will choose a different utility. Regards, Rasstag
  7. mmmmmm... ok Prime... I understand about the HTML "#", however ... I'm trying to understand if my expectations are 'in the weeds' .. when I go to the "Didjano" cache in Google Maps ... on the right hand side it shows: 1 Geocaches Found in search area ...after panning North into Dallas the map shows: 15 Geocaches Found in search area As you can see, the "search area" information is complete with Name, Type, etc... but the 'link' under each cache name is the "Didjano" coordinates for ALL 15 of the listed caches. My question is, are my expectations of the link being correct along with the other information... unreasonable? Hey... if I'm trying to make Google Maps do something which exceeds it's design or programming limits... that's fine... I can live with that... but if this falls in to the category of an "undocumented feature"... then all I'm doing is raising a flag so someone can check it out. Rasstag
  8. Jeremy and/or the team Your folks may be aware of this ‘anomaly’… but just in case it has slipped by… here is the description of the anomaly using Geocaching.com Google Map. Circumstances: Was making a quick check, via above Google Map, for caches in an area that I was planning to be in. Since I didn’t know the zip code or close waypoint name, I went to a cache near me (GCZDA6) and selected “Geocaching.com Google Map” link below the write-up. The map came up and once it was complete it showed that, within the map, I had a single cache located at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/gmnearest.a...;lng=-96.82497# I then used the ‘pan’ feature to move up I-35 until I was in Dallas at about the intersection of I-35 (Stemmons) and “Dallas North Tollway”. When the map caught up with this ‘panning’ exercise, it showed me the a whole bunch of caches within that area, each were listed by name in the right hand frame but what I noticed was…. Each cache was linked to the following URL (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/gmnearest.aspx?lat=32.48737&lng=-96.82497#) which was the original coordinates to GCZDA6. Thought you might want to know… (in case inquiring minds were needing a challenge and all Rasstag
  9. My apologies disenchanted… it certainly was not my intent to offend with my selection and use of that term. The intended definition was that of the prime definition provided by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, that being “moving from place to place without a fixed home”.
  10. Regarding search by coordinates, the shown example for ‘formatting’ is xx.xxxx … Would it not be relatively easy to make those fields a bit ‘smarter’ on the server side by doing a bit of selective ‘parsing’ to dynamically determine the input format used and process accordingly? For example: xx.xxxxx decimal degrees (number-DecimalPoint-number) xx xx.xxxx decimal minutes (number-Space-number-DecimalPoint-number) xx xx xxx degree minute second (number-Space-number-Space-number) I would provide the flexibility needed when you may have varied input location formats to input with. What think you folks?
  11. Jeremy and the team… Let me toss this out for your consideration… a couple of days ago I was speaking with a couple that had recently joined one of the many RV/Travel-Trailer Clubs that are out there. During the conversation, I commented that one of the things that I enjoy was something called “Geocaching”. The couple had heard about this hobby because someone they knew (another ‘traveler’) had gotten up before the group and had given a talk about this hobby. Although some are comfortable with ‘public speaking’… a lot of folks are not… So…what do you think of the idea where your Geocaching team puts together a PowerPoint presentation and/or a Video which addresses the delights and challenges of the hobby of Geocaching which could be downloaded as needed? I see two main advantages… first, you have provided a convenient method for the presenter to download information on the Geocaching topic…. And second… you have the opportunity to ‘control’ the content that is presented. This may be important to insure that the information which is disseminated is both accurate and complete. In retrospect, I would think that Geocaching and the RV ‘vagabonds’ crowd might quite possibly be ‘made for each other’… they are always going to new places… what better opportunity would there be to check out a few caches along the way. As with most posts in this forum… I’m sure you will get more view and comments than you need… but I think that providing the resources for a speaker talking about this hobby … has merit…. What are your thoughts on this? Regards, Rasstag
  12. Greetings folks (..original poster here)… First of all allow me to apologize for not identifying ‘which’ utility that I was talking about (doh!)… you are correct, I was speaking of the Mobipocket Table of Contents. Secondly… many thanks for the references and pointers to ‘other’ utilities which, in your opinions, appear to do a much better job of displaying the data. I’ll take the time to pull down a copy and check them out. Thank you all for the responces… Best regards…
  13. Presently the Pocket Query Table of Contents looks something like: GCAA1A first-cache-title (2mi N)(1/1) GCAA2B second-cache-title (2mi W)(1/1) GCAB1C third-cache-title (3mi N)(1/1) You get the idea… and where all the cache information exists on their respective pages… it would be nice if the cache “type” could be added to the one-liner that makes up the Table of Contents entry… for example: GCAA1A first-cache-title (2mi N)(1/1)V GCAA2B second-cache-title (2mi W)(1/1)T GCAB1C third-cache-title (3mi N)(1/1)M Where the ID could be a letter(s)… like: T-Traditional Cache M-Multi-Cache V-Virtual Cache L-Letterbox Hybrid E-Event W-Webcam Cache ?-Mystery or puzzle caches R-Reverse Cache EC-Earthcache It appears that there are sufficient unused character spaces to allow this ID field to be implemented. Fellow cachers… what are your thoughts on this??
  14. hmmmmm.... well... let's see... currently using Netscape 7.1 . (..with Java enabled)... and after doing some cross checking... I noticed these differences: Using Internet Explorer Version 6.0.2800.1106CO, the cursor is positioned properly, and… when migrating to the web-discussion area, I arrive there already logged in. Trying the same thing with Netscape… results in the cursor not in the form-field area, nor am I logged in when I move to the discussion area… I have to do that when that screen appears. (Looks like I may have to ‘change’ my browser of choice to get the results I'm wanting… [unless, of course, the problem is a cockpit error of some sort… not the first time that has happened ya know]). If you need additional info… let me know. Thanks for checking… Rasstag
  15. ... don't ya just hate it when someone that's got nothing better to, thinks up ‘stuff’ for you to deal with when your plate is already overflowing..!! Well… this is just a thought… it would be ‘nice’ if the login-page “Geocaching – Login”(and the discussion login-page for that matter) be modified such that the user-name, password, and ‘remember-me fields be have a tabindex associated with them. For example, the username field on the main login page is: <INPUT id=myUsername style="WIDTH: 120px" maxLength=50 name=myUsername size="20"></P> … adding the tabindex constructs would make it: <INPUT id=myUsername style="WIDTH: 120px" maxLength=50 name=myUsername size="20" tabindex="1"></P> …which would automatically place the cursor to the filed that you would suppose would be need first…. Password would have a tabindex of 2… and so-on. Well… that’s all I have for now… I need to send a suggestion to the President on how to balance the budget. Keep up the good work on this great site. Regards, Rasstag
  16. Renegade, You might want to be 'sensitive’ about the names you choose… legitimate maggots may be offended by being ‘associated’ with those that would actually steal from caches.
  17. I have been doing that for some time now... I picked up a Handspring Treo 300 which marries a cell phone and Palm O/S type PDA. It also allows you to connect and log on to the Internet via the phone ‘data mode’ and that allows me to log into geocaching.com from the field if I wish… (.. there have been times I have ‘logged’ my find while sitting on some rock at the cache site). Toys are great… and remember… the one who has the most toys when they die…WINS!!! "Remember... nothing is completly worthless!!... it can always be used as a bad example"!
  18. Ok, Criminal … looks like it’s time for a sobriety test… Remove your hands from the mouse… Look directly at the monitor, And, out loud, repeat the following phrase clearly and distinctly three times! Unique New York "Remember... nothing is completly worthless!!... it can always be used as a bad example"!
  19. Print out the explanation of “What is Geocaching” from the web page and have it with you in pocket or purse. It will lend creditability to your attempts to verbally explain what you were doing if stopped by an officer of the law while on a hunt. "Remember... nothing is completly worthless!!... it can always be used as a bad example"!
  20. I heard it rumored that if you spray your trousers with a mild Viagra solution that it will cause all the velcro-like hooks in the burrs to straighten and then simply fall off. Haven’t verified this myself… but thought I’d share the info in case it case merit. "Remember... nothing is completly worthless!!... it can always be used as a bad example"!
  21. It wouldn't take a lot to have something like the following put on the back of an old windbreaker.. "Forensic Field Unit" "Remember... nothing is completly worthless!!... it can always be used as a bad example"!

    WOO HOO

Gentlemen… there is a “lesson here”… unfortunately the ones that need to heed it the most will probably heed it the least… never suspecting that THEY are the ones that require introspection. AuntGiGi… don’t loose your enthusiasm for this new hobby you have discovered because of this… the ‘field’ Geocaching experience is where it’s at… enjoy. "Remember... nothing is completly worthless!!... it can always be used as a bad example"!
  23. (.. hope your taking notes, with all this advice, cause there may be a pop-quiz at the end of the session). Another thing you will find out is… after several ‘successful’ hunts… you will be able to develop an ‘eye’ for hiding spots. I haven’t got that many under my belt as it is… but I went back to one or two of my first ones and tried to understand ‘why’ I had so much trouble spotting them. I think the answer is that with experience… you don’t ‘overlook’ potential hiding sites like can sometimes happen when your just learning the ropes. (btw.. “Luna Girl”… interesting name… your not telepathic by any chance are you ;-) Good luck on your hunt… let us know how it went.. Regards, Rasstag "Remember... nothing is completly worthless!!... it can always be used as a bad example"!
  24. ... a discount coupon for Scoobie-snacks would work fine.. (.. so far... there has been no record of wild animals digging up merchandise coupons out of a cache and redeeming them at the local market… so I think your safe with this ;-) "Remember... nothing is completly worthless!!... it can always be used as a bad example"!
