  1. I've found two instances now where a link to the Play map doesn't work: clicking on the small map window on a cache page and wanting to see all caches places by another cacher.

    The full error message:

Btw, why do I get to the Play map instead of a simple list to see the caches places by someone?
Win 11 (meh!) and Firefox, latest version. Greasemonkey with Project-GC addon, plus adblocker.

Hi I was wondering what the rules were re maintaining a cache. I went caching last week in Wandsworth and the cache was really overgrown with thorns and weeds. Are we as cachers allowed to cut away the weeds and thorns with secateurs? The thorns and weeds were a positive trip hazard.

Please don't destroy nature for the sake of a cache. Be careful and mindful of your surroundings when trying to find one. See if there's another way to it, and if not the consider whether you prefer not to do it and log a DNF or to draw a bit of blood. Hey, it's an outdoor game after all.

I can chime in a bit with the geology side of things...that's what my degree is in anyways. What do you mean by "typesite"? Anything geology related already has enough categories: Rocks and Minerals, Fossils, Rock Hounding, Places of Geologic Significance (just to name a few).

This. One could focus on stratigraphic type sections, but even there they are problems. And many aren't quite visible. Try to find a golden nail for the Eemian for example (hint: it's not on the surface). But that would be a category for both geo and archaeo that I would specifically seek out as both a geologist and archaeology lover (just today drooled over a small Roman Egyptian collection in a small museum in Egypt)

  4. Well, just two days after returning from Malaga and Gibraltar I logged my first cache in Egypt. Have to say that the climate is more pleasant than in Andalucia, basically hotter but less humid. Once I'm back home I'll certainly NOT travel for a while because the own bed is just the most comfy one. :antenna:

The text displayed in the web browser after sending the mail has been showing HTML entities for non-ASCII characters (and some ASCII as well, as in your example) for a long time. However, the actual mails were correct (I always send a copy to myself), and I assume that's also true for your mail. If you'd like to check, just send me a short mail with a "problematic" character, and I can tell you what I received.

    There you go:

And yeah, the email was indeed fine.

This Bug exists since a long time, but nothing happened. I reported it 4 month ago

I wonder why this bug not has been already fixed. It shouldn't be a difficult fix ...

Yikes! I don’t have umlaute, but I get this error when I write something as basis as ‘don’t’. Like: what the heck? You’d think English was at least working.

  7. I just sent an email to a cache owner (not message center) and the email displayed afterwards gave me a ' with every '. I'm not sure the recipient received the same and I didn't send a copy to myself. My keyboard is set to English, Dutch International, and I never had this problem previously.

  8. Thanks a lot GS. That's some very nice stats, and I hope we'll see this more often from now on. Lets say every 6 months? Or a yearly summary of sorts?

    Biggest surprises for me:

most logged cache type: traditional. I'd hoped it was EarthCache

countries visited: 8! Though not first visits. That's just 5 (though the last one might not be included)

favourite points awarded: 4! (Yeah, I'm very stingy when it comes to using FPs)

There are boats from the UK to the Isle of Man too. If I had been on the west coast I would have rather have taken a boat than flown.

I know. I can only fly to London though from my current place. And taking a train to... I think Liverpool also takes a lot of time and isn't cheap. For me, IoM is at the moment as difficult as the Channel Islands and the few other remaining microstates because my home airport is s***. Gibraltar was the last easy microstate for me :D

  10. Yeah, I’d first need to get to the uk, likely stay a night and then fly on.

Anyway, Gibraltar is a fact after a relaxing bus ride from Malaga (and Andalucia found as well). Now on to collecting the ecs on the rock, and later a swim in the hotelpool. Just two weeks after shoulder surgery. Next week I’m off to somewhere hotter as I saw a fab last minute offer to Egypt I could not resist😬😅

"You must have a non-Event geocache published in 2023 that has earned at least 4 Favorite points by December 31, 2023."

That will certainly favour some parts of the world more than other parts. Parts of the world that caches get more finds in, and so the cache has a much higher chance of getting 4 favourite points, even if the % is lower. I'm travelling in Europe at present and caches often have many favourite points, even though they are VERY ordinary caches. When they can get several logs a week, even sometimes a day, that's to be expected. I keep a watch on my finds until the next log. Against that, many of my past Australian finds might not get a log for months after mine.

Expect most of the Virtuals to go to northern countries.

% is what counts; NOT number of favourite points.

Agree. I'm now thinking of the lonesome cache in Kazakhstan who might be placing caches, but finders are so rare that the chance of getting 4 fps is pretty much nil. I think especially those countries would benefit from a well-made virtual.

That was my point, I enjoy getting new location souvenirs (countries, states, provinces) but couldn't care less about other souvenirs.

I hope you have a quick recovery, sorry about your accident.

Thanks a lot. I hope things go faster now. It's been 6 months already, and I just had a second surgery. But things are already much better now than they were during the past 6 months.

The only souvenirs I earn these days are accidental, unless it's a new location that I'm happy to get.  With my ~100 caches per year I don't come close to getting these souvenirs.

Do you want them? For me, I don't care. I only really collect country souvenirs and international EC day ones. Besides, my numbers this year have been very low because I can't drive due to an ongoing accident.

If you take the trains in Malaga, beware that the train station has platforms numbered 1 thru 8-ish, but also platforms numbered 1 and 2 downstairs, the local trains.  Figuring that out involved a bit of running.  We'd booked something from platform 1, but there was nothing in sight.

That was ages ago.  They might've improved the numbering since.

    Gibraltar is eccentricly cool.

Cool, thanks a lot! I'll likely arriving by train from the airport. And leaving the same way again. Lets see how this goes (and how good/bad my Spanish still is).

Hotel in Gibraltar is a fact, and I should have enough time to climb the rock and find most caches. And the coolest thing is: None of this is going off my vacation days as I'm currently off sick due to surgery :D (not in the US, fully paid sick leave is a thing here)
