  1. I prefer to purchase electronic products that are refurbished by the manufacturer because you know that that particular unit has been tested. When you buy new, they normally only perform spot testing on a batch so you may get a unit that has a problem. This will be my first GPSr but I have bought refurbished Apple products, video gear and audio equipment that have worked many years without a hiccup.
  2. Darn!! I saw that REI had the 450 on sale for $199 and I said to myself that I'll get it after my business trip. Now that I'm back, it's nowhere to be found at that price. I guess you snooze you lose. :-(
  3. Can the contents of an SD card be loaded into memory? That would free up the SD slot for another set of maps on another SD card.
  4. I've narrowed my purchase down to the Garmin Oregon 450 or 450t. I realize they are the same hardware but the 450t has the 100k topographic maps pre-loaded. The 24K maps are probably better for geocaching so I'll have to purchase those anyway. Does it make sense to go for the 450t especially since I've seen the 450 on sale for $199? What other maps will I need for geocaching in California?
  5. I've had no problems with my iPhone 4. It's fine for light caching. I use the Geocaching.com app and most of the time it takes me right to the cache or at the very least it gets me in the ballpark. Keep in mind that when you use the GPS capability it will drain the battery a lot faster than normal operation.
  6. How the heck did you find that? I tried it at home and it seemed to work fine. Thanks for the tip. -= Ken =-
  7. I have the official $10 Groundspeak app for the iPhone which is great for finding and locating caches. However many times, especially for multi-caches, I need to enter coordinates to find the next location. It doesn't look like the official app can do this. I've tried Motion-X GPS but that doesn't show you where you are and where you need to go (or I couldn't figure out how to do it). What do you use to enter coordinates on your iPhone? Thanks, -= Ken =-
  8. Thanks everyone. I was trying to generate my own "Everything" PQ when there is already a "My Finds" PQ. I don't know how I missed it. Next I'll use that PQ to see how the 3rd party software and websites look when they generate stats. Thanks again.
  9. The problem I've run into with the Pocket Queries is that they have a limit of 500 miles. Some of my caches are over 5,000 miles away and not included in the Pocket Queries. That seems to make PQ's useless for what the 3rd party solutions need. :-(
  10. When I check out the profile of a friend I can see a list of his "First To Finds". I can't see that in my own profile. How can I make the same type of list that I can see in my profile or statistics? Thanks.
  11. A friend of mine gave me his old eTrex Venture (green model - no CX or HC). He said he never used it and it looks brand new except that the CD was lost. I thought I would see how good it is for geocaching since I'm brand new at it. I also have an iPhone4 and will probably download the Geocaching.com App. Which unit do you think will work better for geocaching and general trail hiking? Thanks, Ken
  12. Are there any other good GPS apps for the iPhone? For example, I like to hike and take pictures so an app that can keep track of where I've hiked and also let me use that data to geotag my photos when I get home on the computer would be great. Thanks, -= Ken =-
  13. Thanks. I'll probably go with the 340. After the latest price drop on the Nuvi I was tempted but since I have a friction mount in each car that fits the StreetPilot 300 series it makes sense to stick with a 340. Besides, I'm saving up for a 60CSx for hiking and geocaching. Thanks again, -= Ken =-
  14. I have been using a 330 for a few months now that has been great (except for the occasional weird routing). My wife wants to get a GPS unit for her car. We checked Amazon and they have a 340 that is cheaper than the 330. The Garmin site shows the 340 as discontinued but it seems more capable than the 330. I'm wondering whether I should get the discontinued and cheaper 340 or the current and more expensive 330? Thanks, -= Ken =-
