  1. When you turn it on keep hitting the 'back' button until you get the screen that has the choices of 'Mark', 'Find', 'Routes', 'Tracks', 'Setup', and 'Accessories'. when you get to that screen push the 'click stick' to the left and then push it. You should see one choice, 'Owner Information'. Click the clickstick again and you're there! I've read some debate on how much personal info you should plug in. I entered my name and address, info that isn't that hard for people to get anyway. In return for that info I was able to get my GPSr back when I left it on the trunk of my car at a trailhead and then drove off. I was on the 'Net looking for a replacement the next day when I got a call from the honest guy who found it. He wouldn't even accept a reward! We need more people like him! And be sure to click on the box that says 'Show At Power-up'! ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~
  2. It IS a right on to S. Redland Rd. But it immediately goes down a hill and back under Hwy. 213. So, on a map it may look like it goes to the left. ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~
  3. quote:Turn right on S Reland Rd (11 miles to next) Would that be S Redland Rd.? ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~
  4. Over the last couple of years I've been gaining a pound or two a month. Since I've started geocaching I've held steady. If I don't gain what I have been gaining lately, does that count as losing weight? I'm gonna count it! ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~
  5. It's nice to know the exact distance to the green. But, if you golf like me it really doesn't matter. With a five-iron in my hand the ball can go anywhere from 5 yards to 180 yards. What I need is something that tells me how well I am going to hit my next shot! ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~
  6. quote:Originally posted by SamLowrey: Is this not a marketing gimick aimed at kids? Is that acceptable? Personally, I abhor the cheap, valueless (or bad values) that McDonalds represents and wouldn't want my kids swallowing it hook line and sinker, but to each his own I suppose..... I've found that my kids enjoy a McToy found in a cache much more than one they get in a Happy Meal. Must be something about the family outing or something. I don't know for sure. It's my way of undermining McDonald's. Just think! If all the children got their McToys from caches Ronald would go broke! And, by the way, it's a marketing gimmick aimed at parents that can't say "No!" ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~
  7. I read this thread earlier and it was too depressing because I just lost my Garmin Legend yesterday when I left it sitting on my trunk at a trailhead. So, I went off to pout and start shopping for a new unit. Then the phone rang. It was a guy wanting to know if I lost 'one of them GPS things.' He thought he'd found a cell phone. When he got home he started pushing buttons. When it came on, there was my name and address. So, he gave me a call. He lives less than 5 miles away. I just got home with my GPSr in good working order. I would have been home sooner but I tried to insist that he let me give him something for his good deed. But, as is the case with good people like him, the effort was futile. He settled for a short course in geocaching. I took him and his son to a cache in a park less than a mile from their house that I had just done a couple weeks ago. They thought it was pretty cool. Sounds like another cacher or two are on their way... ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~
  8. Duck vs. Duct It also tells the difference between 100 mph tape, 200 mph tape, and 1,000 mph tape... ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~
  9. quote:Originally posted by chubby forest monkey:It seems so silly if you are the first one to find a cache, and the first one to log it in, to crow about it as if that's all that matters. I thought I'd do a background check to see if you really are qualified as a 'silliness' expert. Let's me get this straight. You've gone off in search of Tupperware, Ammo cans, and various other containers hidden in bushes, logs, stumps, and who knows where else, about 150 times. Not only that, but you traveled to 2 countries, 8 states, and the District of Columbia to do so? How much time did that take?! Yep, I'd say you know plenty about silliness! Seriously, though, I've read lots of logs from lots of people with different motivations. It doesn't take long to determine if I'm not interested in a log. Then I just stop reading. I figure if the person crowing is happy, who am I to not want them to be happy? I'll just ignore the crowing if it bothers me. ~~Seriousness done~~ The way I look at it, crowing about a First Find isn't nearly as silly as leaving a machete at a cache site! Just kiddin'! Last one there's a rotten egg! P.S. I also heard a rumor that you go out looking for round pieces of brass stuck in concrete... HeHeHeHeHe... ~~~In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!~~~ [This message was edited by Pobre Rico on August 05, 2003 at 07:10 PM.] [This message was edited by Pobre Rico on August 05, 2003 at 07:11 PM.]
  10. One of the choices on the Travel Bug page is 'Grab It'. When someone gives you a travel bug that would be the choice to transfer possesion. In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!
  11. When I find a bug in a cache that it hasn't been logged in I 'grab it', then 'drop it' in the cache that I found it in, then retrieve it from the cache. That way it shows up on the tracking map as having been to the cache that you found it in. I don't know if that's the right way to do it, but I haven't had any complaints... In my world, nothing ever goes wrong!
  12. Well, the boss man is doing everything he can to screw up my plans. Now it's back to working days, 6 days a week, 12 hours a day... Sorry to say, it looks like this isn't going to happen this year. But, it's going to be a definite thing next year! Here's the agenda for next year. At least 15 brand new caches within 10 miles of the event site. Some will be permanent, others just for the event. A team event or two. Stuff for the kids. And an all-around good time. Any suggestions on a site? I've been kinda looking around up at the mountain for a nice campground that is in an area with good GPS reception and a layout that works good for a group event. Any suggestions for location, events, or anything else let me know... [This message was edited by Pobre Rico on August 02, 2003 at 09:53 PM.]
  13. quote:Originally posted by Mark 42: BTW, I haven't seen this question in the FAQ (tough I may have missed or not encountered it yet): If a waypoint is given as N AA° AA.xyz & W AA° AA.xyz, how far off (in feet or meters) will a person be for every value error of y & z In other words, if it xyz are 435, but I'm at xyz values 436 or 445, how far away am I from the waypoint's correct location. A change in y or z depends on if you're talking latitude or longitude. Theoretically, for latitude, a change of one in y would be 60'9" and a difference of one in z would be 6'1". But, the Earth isn't perfectly round, so it changes depending how far from the 45th parellel you are. A change of one in the z could be anywhere from 6'1/2" to 6'1-1/2". Longitude is a whole different story. At the equator a change of one in y would again be about 60'9" and the same change in z would be 6'1". But, as you approach the poles the meridians get closer together. By the time you reach the pole all the meridians smack into each other and any change in y or z makes no difference at all! At least, I think all that is correct. Any REAL experts out there care to confirm or deny?
  14. Let me get this straight. Your enjoyment of the geocaching experience is diminished if I TNLN? So, does that mean it is also diminished if I never visit the cache that you go to? The result is the same. Anyway, the most common reason I TNLN is because I get excited about the hunt and take off from the car and forget to grab something ouot of my 'bag of goodies' that I keep in the car. Alos, like Harrald, a lot of times I leave something and take nothing. Why should I take nothing if there is nothing there worth taking? You might consider not reading the logs. Then you will never realize that someone has been there without trading...
  15. Let's see... Born in Springfield, moved to Thurston, moved back to Springfield, moved to Beaverton, moved to Walterville, moved to Tigard, moved back to Walterville, moved to back to Tigard, moved to Sherwood, Moved to Portland, moved to Tualatin, moved to Salem, moved back to Beaverton, moved to Gresham, moved back to Portland, moved back to Gresham, moved to Carus, and then moved to Milwaukie. Now I'm thinkin' 'bout movin' back to Tigard. Lots o' moves, but always stayed in Oregon, just like my parents and their parents and their parents. Before that it was the midwest... Minnesota, I think.. and New England on the other side, I believe...
  16. I'm still hoping to put something together up at the Hood, but I've been switched to night shift and working 6 days a week. Makes it hard to put this together. I'll know for sure in the next week or two if I can pull it off. Fingers crossed!
  17. I thought it might be fun to put together a family-friendly geocaching event up in the Mt. Hood neighborhood. Anybody interested? I'm thinkin' of a Saturday/Sunday in August. Maybe a few activities for day trippers and some for overnighters. If I get enough interest I promise to make it worth your time! Let me know.
